Japan Scrambles Jets after Chinese Overfly Senkakus
Quote:
A Chinese military surveillance plane entered what Japan considers its airspace near disputed islands on Thursday, the Japanese Defense Ministry said, an escalation in an already tense standoff over the territory. Japan scrambled fighter jets in response, but the Chinese plane left before they arrived, according to Japanese authorities.

The ministry said the plane’s incursion was the first known violation of Japanese airspace by a Chinese plane since it began keeping records about 50 years ago. China considers the airspace its own, because it is laying claim to the islands that Japan has controlled for decades.

Tokyo lodged a formal protest with Beijing, which swiftly retorted that it was the Japanese who had encroached.

In Beijing, the Foreign Ministry spokesman, Hong Lei, said that the activities of the Chinese plane were “completely normal.”

“China requires the Japanese side stop illegal activities in the waters and airspace of the Diaoyu Islands,” Mr. Hong said.

The episode was an embarrassment for the administration in Japan, already struggling in national polls, since radar systems failed to detect the Chinese surveillance plane on Thursday. The authorities in Tokyo became aware of its presence only after a Japanese Coast Guard ship spotted it near the islands.
I also recommend reading Jane Perlez's piece from yesterday's Times on why China continues to support North Korea despite considerable unease about that nation's behavior within the ranks of the Chinese government.

You what's crazy about this flying?
Initial reports from eye witnesses in CT are saying they only heard two loud "booms" during the shooting.
Police say that the gunman had two guns.
I wonder if they were these types?

Geez, the conflicting reports between CBS Connecticut and CBS New York are just nuts right now.
The local media aren't much better.
I've read that 20 were injured and 3 killed, now I'm reading 27 killed 14 injured. AP has 20 killed, 18 injured.
Hope the media feeding frenzy ends soon so we know what actually happened.

This type of news really brings out my sadistic side. I'd really like to just lock these pieces of shit up in my own torture chamber and make every day miserable for them, personally. Mass killings are always horrible but these are KIDS. People have been pondering the innocence/happiness of children for generations. The CT one really got me riled up as I'm so close to it, but to hear the same happened in China on the same day just pisses me off even more...

And it should.
I'd love to take both of these mass attackers/murderers and skin them alive Afghani style and let the vultures pick at them until they die.

Israel had this kind of problem once.

Documentary recalls the horrors of Ma’alot school massacre

Israel's solution to this type of problem was simple, quick, and has worked ever since.

I hear you.
I lived on Everett Street and Ken Karl when the Columbine shooting took place.
I used to walk to the Columbine high-school track with my girlfriend from our house to run in the morning before work.

So I know the feeling of dread that you get when something like this happens.

No to be cold and insensitive admins, but could you give the Newtown massacre its own thread?

those booms likely came from the PA speaker... if that's confirmed then it's likely the shooter was peppering the admin. office first during PA announcement

I can't understand what could possibly be the reason to attack a elementary school?

With the insanity of reports coming out, you're probably correct.

I don't think reason has anything to do with it.
Just a level of hate/anger that none of us can identify with.
Mental health is a real problem in the US.
Many institutions were defunded in the 1980s, and it would seem that after that the number of shootings like this one has spiraled upwards out of control.
I maybe wrong, but perhaps it is time to start rethinking that policy.

I have never understood people who just walk into classrooms or malls or cinemas and shoot the innocent. Why the necessity to ruthlessly steal away their lives? I might sound heartless but if they think their lives suck, why don't they shoot their own heads instead of inflicting pain on others? Are they that desperate to feel in control that they want to have the last bit of "power" before they are shot/arrested by the cops?

I am guessing if their minds are screwed, they are not bound by reasoning anyway.
