I found this article interesting. Link to the actual article should be on the page.

CS and all versions of it had combos just as long, or if not, the hitstun and hitstop was so large that it "slowed" down the combos, making them to appear longer than they actually are. The issue is present in CT as well. As for the article, I'm not really sure I agree that's the trend. Sure, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Dead or Alive 5, and (Ultimate) Marvel vs Capcom 3 all have long combos, but there are also games with shorter combos like Street Fighter 4, Persona 4 Arena, and Soul Calibur V. I don't know why these games weren't mentioned at all. Is it the publicity? |

Even then, only a few Dead or Alive 5 characters can pull off long combos. Even then they're pretty difficult and rare.
As far as I've seen, only 2D fighters are notable for particularly long combos. Like CP. |

Long combos are fine, but like any fighting game there needs to be a balance between the neutral game (footsies, spacing, zoning, etc), the combo damage and execution, and the setplay (oki, mixups, etc).
When the combos are too long, you get Fate/Unlimited Codes and Under Night In-Birth, where the neutral game is just a single coin toss at the beginning of the match and whoever wins it rides the momentum all the way to the end with no point of return. If the majority of the game is just combo, 50/50 oki mixup reset into another combo, all the way to the end with no neutral game except at the beginning of the match, then it's not that far off from a broken fighting game with infinites. |

Melty has plenty of variety, and the combo length depends on the character. Characters like C/F Ryougi or H Nanaya have simple combos while C Arc and C Powerd Ciel, and C Satsuki have much lengthier combos that require a lot of execution. It's nothing like UNIB where you have Hyde and Seth who have everything from fast normals and up to 7k+ damage combos that generate the meter to use their 200% Viel Off ultimate to having fuzzies and unblockable setups that work in every situation. They fixed the infinites in that game, but for those characters it doesn't feel any different at all. |
