Anyway, I honestly can't imagine how this show can top these last 2 episodes. Most shows I've watched tend to flounder about after the "main goal" is achieved. Hopefully the show won't weird out on me and making a genre shift like turning into some alien survival-harem building-murder mystery-action hero show, just because the author didn't know where to head next.

You don't have to worry about that yet, because the main goal has not been achieved. The main goal is to get into space, getting selected as an astronaut merely means you get to stand before the starting line, as Serika said in ep36.

What was Serika good about actually? Other than pigging out?

She was the star of the early rounds, if I recall correctly. Plus she's a doctor and presumably knows all kinds of doctor stuff.

Anyway, isn't this near the end since it's 48 episodes? I mean...

Spoiler:
He's not a full-fledged astronaut yet. His training alone could -and most likely will- last a long time. They can also explore the characters in more depth and introduce new ones. The manga is over 19 volumes long and still going strong, there is enough material for a lot more episodes (not sure which volume the anime's at right now...).

If I recall correctly, the anime is only around maybe the eighth volume...

Almost every series in Japan took the week off for New Year's.

As always great episode. I laughed hard when watching several scenes (Serika doing boxing on the camera, director's speech, Murasaki's trolling plus the boring lecture which feels eerily familiar). But what I'm most interested in is
Spoiler for ep. 39:

The cliffhanger event was spoiled in the trailer for the live-action movie, but I did not know then whether it was a unique plot element for the film only. Well, now we know.

The comedic stuff in this episode was quite funny, so it made the shock ending more effective.

I too must question their lack of maps, though, the lunar surface by now is fairly well-known, and it would be silly to drive for an hour just navigating by eye.

Apparently, there exist a few stationary points between the Earth and the Moon, which would cover for at least one of the satellites, but I wonder how this would be possible for the two on the dark side of the Moon, since its gravitational pull is quite thin due to its relatively small mass. The Moon should have a theoretical stationary orbit, but considering all these other factors, in practice a "GPS" system for the moon would be difficult if not impossible to implement and maintain for any useful amount of time.

EDIT: Yeah, theoretically, the other two satellites would have to be placed so far away that other pulls would have larger effect on them.

As for a GPS-like system, that is quite possible with triangulation, just that such a system wouldn't be as accurate or as timely as GPS, which puts its usefulness into question. Apparently some dude received funds to develop it though.

JAXA opening ceremony.
So their dreams finally came true.
The director made an interesting speech.
Looks like they have a LOT of training ahead.
Things are just getting started.
Hibito was having some excitements of his own on the moon.
This episode's ending was nerve racking!

I didn't expect to see that kind of cliffhanger ending in Space Brothers. It would be quite a dark twist if Hibito died, but of course that won't happen.

I also found their lack of maps odd. It's very dangerous to drive blindly on the lunar surface as they did. They should have at least be more careful (they didn't seem very worried).

In fact the greater danger on the moon, and even more so on an asteroid is that a strong kick could lift you high enough that getting back down becomes an issue.

I loved the shoutout to Melies too...especially with Nitta, Kenji and Serika at the end! And Apo's too adorable as always.

Good episode back. Definitely wasn't expecting THAT to happen in the end. But I can't seriously see Hibito getting killed off...

Actually GPS satellites are in medium orbit, not geostationary. The system works by using the speed of light to calculate the distance to the satellites rather than relying on fixed points.

Agreed, what with "Hugo" more moderns were already aware of Melies' importance than was the case before, but it was still great to see. Just insanely clever animation there.
