I just returned from a theater in Shibuya, generally, I enjoyed watching the 3rd movie, though I was a little lost, since I haven't watched the 2nd one, and my japanese were not good enough for some long-assed explanations, but having watched and discussed the franchised over the years helped... which is also the main thing for me, for new viewers this will be like every other american film, only animated, ie looks good, sounds good, has no character depth/development or plot... the later attributes that the film lacks are though filled in by the TV series and EoE.
Oh! and generally speaking the film has not that much from the original storyline, I feel it has more rearranged some events, while dropping some very unpopular ones. All in all enjoyable, if one has watched the TV+EoE or is braindead

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGy4RimdR9o Apparently none of those made it to the actual film. Hell, Kaji's gun scene there was one of the most intriguing when the preview was shown, and now Spoiler:
