^ The new OP shows the main characters as No Name, so there's a chance they won't succeed anyone and instead will form a new team or group while keeping their own names.

If they form their own group instead of becoming successors to AKB0048, I think it's gonna be problematic since they can't find a new crop of understudies with the same caliber as the 77th Gen Understudies.

AKB0048 15 - Live Across the Galaxy (Some Delays May Be Experienced)

Most of what I know about Japanese variety shows comes from anime. And even in the far of future world of 0048, they appear to be just as they are in the modern day. Full of large text overlays, possibly humiliating tests and a wild audience. So it made for a fun episode. Sonata seems to be the most suited to a variety show, while Makoto's "reaction technique" running gag only got funnier as the episode went along. Chieri was separated from the group for a long time, so I wonder if that explains her low ranking. She works best when she's with Nagisa, or something like that.

Mimori stole the show in the two scenes she was in. The pudding and the dodgeball game both looked very exciting. Sexy exciting. A nice chance to get some breathing room after last week, but it also continued a bit of the tension that the last episode built up there at the end.

Gonna need a few weeks to adjust to the new opening and ending. They're both fine songs, but the catchiness of the front half's themes are still in my head.

She ranked 9th. That's really good. In real life it's literally impossible for an understudy to make the top ten. Chieri made it only because she got really popular as a result of her speech during the trial.

I was under the impression 9th was a bad thing (out of 10, 9 seems like a pretty low number.) But thank you for the correction. I knew everyone had fallen silent in shock, I just wasn't sure if that was good or bad shock.

I'll be disappointed if this season continues to put fanservice ahead of the story as the first couple of episodes have done. The plot developments are interesting ones, but they get easily lost amidst the array of T&A that seems to be the focus of this season so far. For me, at least, cute girls busting out of their clothes has less appeal than a good story.

Any opinions on why Chieri chose to use a picture of herself with such a sour expression for her poster?

I expect Tsubasa/Mariko-sama will soon put two and two together once she thinks about who Chieri's father is. Photographer-san already made the point about corporate backing. Surely it shouldn't be all that hard to guess which corporation might be involved.

Well, even if they knew, I don't know what they could do about it. Even if the sponsor is Zodiac, as long as they don't breach whatever contract they have going on, there shouldn't be any problems. Of course, Zodiac has some evil designs for Chieri but I don't see how Tsubasa would learn about that.

To also put it in context, with 18 successors and 16 kenkyusei at least competing, this means Chieri, still a kenkyusei, was able to get ahead fo at least 10 successors and likely her fellow 15 kenkyusei.

Hopefully the fanservice should be kept within this episode, but we'll see as soon as the next episode preview comes in.

Mariko was announcing the Top 10, but the election covers everyone in the group. Assuming they have three full teams (even though we've only really seen one) plus two full generations of understudies and Kanade and Mimori, that's about 70 to 80 people. And since the top 12(? 16?) get a spot on the next single, Chieri's rank counts as a win.

As it's said in one of the entries on the glossary on the main site (and that was translated by same group who does the anime), AKB0048 currently don't have enough members to have more than one team. There is likely only the 18 members that appears at the end of the OP.

It took me a re-watch to understand everyone's reaction at the end was more of a "holy crap, already made it?" than "only 9th?" thing. Blame is probably on me and all others who got it wrong, though, for not being strong enough with their AKB-fu.

Also, I have to be the biggest moron in this thread. How did it take me so long to notice Chieri's kirara has her ponytail? Also, the little squeaks the kiraras make are their respective girl's name

Anyway, back to the episode. PHEROMONES!

Spoiler for Ep 15:

Glad I wasn't the only one who thought that. I was like:

"9th place...is that good? Bad?"

I totally loved how Chieri got nicknamed Cherry by Kojiharu. I wonder if it will become her official nickname.

Why not? It's kind of her original name anyway And darn, I forgot to put that in my detals list. Nice little touch there without a doubt.

I'd like to claim the honor, but I think a bunch of us came to that conclusion. While some of the enemy on the ground may have been intending the trial seriously, it seemed fairly clear that the main purpose was just to lure in the idols to show off the kirara-effect.

All the idol-specific kiraras have some feature that makes them resemble their human. It's cute. I did not catch that Chieri's was actually saying her name, but it certainly did at least in that squeak at the end of this episode. I'm going to have to do some research to verify about the rest of them.

I too was unclear on whether the reaction was supposed to be positive or negative to Chieri's ranking. Initially I thought 9th would be good. I mean, she's still a trainee and she's beating out successors in the rankings. But the long pause and looks of shock with no smiles made me wonder if maybe it was supposed to be bad instead.

Oh, and Chieri's father smiles too much. I really hate those villains who always have that damned confident smile on their freaking faces. It makes me want to rip their mouths completely off their faces so they can't smile any more.

Other than that, this was a lovely episode. Lots of nice reactions from the girls, poor Makoto having her issues as usual and getting her popularity because of how clearly legitimate and real she is, Nagisa's moping making me want to take her by the shoulders and shake her a bit, and Chieri's uncertainty making me want to hug her.

I have to agree with Nagisa, Chieri looks magificent when she's dancing. That's where she's meant to be, and what she's meant to be doing. Chieri at her Chieriest, to paraphrase someone else.

As an aside, it looks like Crunchyroll went full retard with the songs in their translation of episode 1 of Next Stage. Complete official lyrics for three of the four songs in that episode can be found in two seconds through Google... so why did the translator decide to do them by ear?

I only checked Pioneer, but there were laughable mistakes such as mishearing 都会 as 世界 or mistaking 初のトライ for 明日のトライ. They must have secured the rights to the songs, so why didn't someone think to use the official lyrics?

Concerning the Kiraras, I believe Kakazu Yumi (the voice of Tsubasa and the Kirara) confirmed at one point that the Kiraras say the name of their associated member. You can pretty clearly hear Mimori's going "mimori mi~" this episode; same with Chieri's. Pay attention to the scene where she goes onstage to do impressions. "Chieri ri~"

Guess I got too dazzled by Chieri's shine to think.

In Mimori's case, it's also funny. And lewd. Just like the girl in question. I guess I didn't catch the detail on Chieri's since ponytail isn't her default style, at least to me.

It's probably more of a shock than anything else, they can't believe she's already at 9th place. Basically, they're not sure what to feel.

I don't want to imagine your reaction if he does something like making everyone believe Chieri was a spy all along. God, just thinking about that makes me sad.

For such a big Chieri lover you're being quite soft on Nagisa. She needs to be shaken like a piņata about to burst. I don't really hate her, but she needs to get her act together. And stop crouching in the floor like her favorite pet just died.

That part when she's alone with Nagisa and goes "you really think so?". THAT FACE.

The translator must be tone-deaf.

Well, you know. Dance, sing, etc. Perform.

It was probably also to disguise the kirara's real target a bit back in season 1, when it worked best when both Chieri and Nagisa were together.

Quote:

Oh be warned, I come up with all sorts of graphic and disproportionately violent threats to people who are mean to girls I like in these shows. If he were to do something like that to her... I don't know if any of my normal ways of wanting to kill villains would be strong enough punishment. I may have to come up with something special should that happen.

Quote:

Well I do tend to be soft on girls unless they do something to get me angry, but that's not the only reason here. You can't really shake or slap sense into Nagisa. It tends to take something special to really get through to her: saying the right words or showing her the right thing to make her have an epiphany, and I don't feel that I have a clear enough view about what specific issue regarding the elections is bothering Nagisa to be able to do that just yet. There's the general concern about how well she'll do and the issues about competing against her friends and mentors and such, but I don't really feel those are quite the full story of why she's acting so mopey. So while I think it would be possible to shake her out of her immediate lethergy and back into being an idol (or inspire her out of it, as we saw here), I suspect whatever the bigger issue is that's getting her down has yet to be fully resolved, and it's going to take something... else to solve it.

YES! *watches that scene again* HNG! Must... Hug...
