The fact that Akane was instantly capable of docking with Wakaba cheapens the whole drama of episode 2. What happened to the requirement of being perfectly in sync with each other?

The Alone in this episode also felt much less threatening than the first one, just an excuse to show a battle sequence.

This is definitely a magical girl show poorly disguised as sci-fi. Dumb fun, power of friendship and loli fanservice. Oh well, I have seen worse.

My only question is if Aoi and Wakaba keep their keys or do they always need to wait until Akane transforms? Because the latter option is kinda inconvenient...

It's good, simple, straightforward fun. The earnestness and sincerity of the overall presentation (including the seiyu works) and the excellent BGM takes it up a notch for me, making it something of a hotblooded, inspirational show. It has the same sort of spunky spirit as the Saki anime does, imo.

But yeah, I'm not expecting anything all that complex or deep here. And in fairness, this show probably doesn't need it.

The one "X Factor" is the mysterious antagonist girl, imo. Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but she's giving me an Akemi Homura vibe...

In any event, very nice action-adventure show so far.

Even at only three episodes, Nanoha was deeper than this. Don't go giving this show more credit than it deserves yet. Vividred is simple, entertaining fun, but it hasn't shown any sign of being anything deeper than that.

Indeed she will. Aoi's going to be locked up inside an insane asylum eventually, the poor girl's speech reduced to repeating a mantra over and over again of "Dock only with me, Akane... you don't need anyone else... dock only with me, Akane..." Perhaps interjected with the occasional "I thought I was special... but... Akane docked... with 38 other girls... by the end of the month... *sob*"

Yep, I agree with this assessment. It's a very charming, spirited series with a rich soundtrack; I loved the song that played whenever Saegusa chased Akane through the school. And I find the original Saki anime to somehow be one of the most atmospheric and personality-imbued anime I've ever encountered, particularly the opening and ending themes.

And yeah, I agree that early Nanoha is rather different from early Vivid Red. The original Nanoha series had a somewhat more melancholic and serious tone during even its earliest episodes. I'm sure that Vivid Red could change into something dramatically different (Dragon Ball turned into a wildly different story during the course of its 42 volumes and did so very organically), but it would be hard to pull off naturally in a story as short as this.

Great episode, I like Wakaba, she seems pretty cool, loved the chase scene, they stop to help the teacher than it's right back to the chase. Also that conversation between grandpa, and the Mayor, it was great how she just casusally asks how he got transferred into that body after that whole conversation

Seems like this series needs more explanations on some things. But not to worry! I have a scientifically logical explanation for this! You see, the reason why Akane doesn't have such cute pantsu is because Grandpa was spending all the money on his research, leaving his cute little grand daughters with jersey's and convenience store pantsu!

I really don't know about Nanoha being deeper. Three episodes in, Nanoha was still stuck in the traditional magic girl antics even it it does subvert a few (like the transformation sequences). It's only around episode 5 that things really start getting real for Nanoha with the increasing focus on Fate.

We still don't know what the Alone are after, or what Rei's stake in all this is supposed to be, so don't discount them just yet.

So I was watching the ep 04 preview again (yes I can't wait for it) and I can see this happening:


So Wakaba looks to be the pitcher right? I bet Akane is the batter,


And totally hits one deep to center field straight into Himawari's webcam so the episode will most likely be them going over to her place to apologize, an Alone shows up, Akane cheats again, and we get to enjoy some nice yellow transformations

Wakaba can't even beat Akane in Baseball Oh and, that should setup the perfect excuse for Himawari to attend school in person Ah you crazy Akane, ruining everyone's peaceful life
