Odd. The google translator translates both the bow cannons on Kirishama and the turrets on Yamato as "positron impact".

Kirishima:
36 サンチ陽電子衝撃砲1基

Yamato:
主砲:48サンチ三連装陽電子衝撃砲塔3基

While the Gamilas weapons are called "positron beam"

Gaiderol-class:
330ミリ三連装陽電子ビーム砲塔3基(艦上2基、艦底1基)

TBH, the periscope I don't mind too much; you need some way to get your sensor away out into the standard universe. It's the 'Dimensional Ballast' thing that gets me.

Not sure on any English voice actors at this time. Though I admit that Crispin Freeman could probably pull off Dessler these days. Though there is still some charm in Eddie Allen's Desslok voice. It is very unique among cartoon villains.

Aye that subplot. It is unlikely to happen, and even if it is used would need to be modified due to name and image copyrights. Though it is still possible they might use a variant of it as Episode 14 appears to be a variant of a few other plot lines that were either dropped in the 39 episode run, from the various original set of mangas, and the "Eternal Story of Jura" from Matsumoto written between Yamato series 1 and 2.

Having that angle taken, the other routes are also possible, if unlikely.

Doesn't Dommel have the bird anyways though?

Anyways, you have any more worldbuilding thoughts? Or wild shots in the dark about potential dub casting?

Dommell always had the bird in the series. It was in Episode 19 for sure.

Also is Goer supposed to be based off of Herman Goering or something?

Also I think Dessler, in name, is less a reference to Hitler as it is Anton Drexler, the founder of the National Socialist German Worker's Party. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anton_Drexler

I must say I'm really enjoying the remake so far - as a result, I am tempted to check out some of the originals as well (seen the 2010 film already).

One thing in particular I like about Yamato 2199 is that they've fixed what I consider to be a noticeable plot whole - as to why an all Japanese-crew and ship were chosen to be Earth's last hope (when usually an international crew would have been appropriate):

Spoiler for Why a Japanese-centric ship and crew:

Also, found this non-H doujinshi online:

The Gamilas Empire seems fairly large (the graphic moves rater fast so I can't exactly the extent of it in galactic terms) The two Magelenic Clouds and at least part of the Milky Way are safe to claim as well as anything between Gamilas and Earth.

With an Empire that large, with multiple species intergrated ito the society, they will have a vast fleet. Not only to hold onto existing territories, but also to expand the Empire. We know they are engaged in at least two conflicts as of 2199. A 8 year long backwater war with Earth and an unknown length conflict with Gatlantis in the Small Magellenic Cloud. It is likely they are engaged in other fronts as well to varying degrees, but the Comet Empire front would seem like their most important as that is where Dommel is stationed (though if World War II history is applied, Rommel was assigned to Africa while the bulk of the German Army was engaged in Russia.) Yamato has become a threat to the Empire, but to what scale is unclear from a Gamilas point of view. It has left a large amount of dead in its wake so far, but who knows what sort of damage the Comet Empire is going along a larger front.

The Fleet seen to this date employs massive numbers of a destroyer type ship, and large numbers of two cruiser types. We see less battleships, battlecruisers, or carriers in formations. Usually one battleship in a fleet with maybe a battlecruiser leading large squadrons. Sometimes with light carrier support. However while the Pluto Fleet had over 120 ship by the start of 2199, Dommel's Fleet has thousands of ships. One would assume that there are other large Fleet elements in other regions of the Empire, unless the front with the Comet Empire is drawing massive amounts of resources, and the situation from what we can gather is not desperate on that front, but that might be due to Dommel's skills more than the actual situation.

Spoiler for Dommel's Forces:

The question would be, "What will happen to the Gamilas Empire after Yamato presumably completes her trip to Iscandar and back?"

Spoiler for Specualtion:

We still haven't seen this ship yet (one in the bottom corner between the carrier and cruiser).

Here's another image with this battleship in the top corner:

Actually, a ship of that class (Hydrezaad or the like) appears in episodes 13 and 14 as Celestra and Mirenel's ship, the Shangri-la, with an all white color scheme.

Looking through my Roman Album (Perfect Manual 2), I find the lengths of the Galman warships (and the at the time 265 meter long Yamato). Most are longer than the older version's Gamilas ships. Compared to the Yamato 2199 Gamilas Fleet, the newer small ships are roughly the same size as the current Gamilas cruisers. Their battleships and carriers though are in the 450 - 700 meter range. This would make them larger than most of the Gamilas battleships, save for Dommel's flagship.

And then we have the Imperial Flagship that in Yamato III was listed as 1,350 meters long. While not quite a mile long, it is certainly much longer than Dommel's ship in Yamato 2199. So in 1/1000 scale it would be 135 cm long....or nearly 4 and a half feet long (slightly over 53 inches long). This ship does not need any scale adjustment based on a 333 meter long Yamato. (I believe there is currently a model kit of two of this ship in existance alread. One of them is in 1/6000 scale. Not sure about the other one).

Supposedly. Although I've heard that Nerunn Keyring (from season 3) and the new 2199 character Herm Zoerick are also based on Goering.

Edit: OK, apparently Goer's name in the first drafts was Goering, so I guess there's no debate there.

A ship they...nor modellers, will ever make in 1/1000 scale. Zordar's Dreadnaught. At 12.2 km long it would be 40 feet long as a 1/1000 scale model.

The Comet Empire would be a little over 49 feet in diameter.

It's actually a pale blue, not white.

Sorry, should've been more specific; I didn't mean the specific weapon nomenclature, but rather the actual weapon, itself that turned the tide was a new bow beam cannon on the Kirishima, not the turrets — discussed in a staff interview on starblazers.com, which is unfortunately down, now... So, I guess we'll have to wait until Tim put those interviews up on ourstarblazers.com

Of course. I read those as well. The Earth turreted weapons wer quite ineffective as seen at the Battle of Pluto (though from dialogue, it seem like they expected them to do better than they did against the Gamilas forces).

It is a shame (at this point anyway) that we have not seen the bow mounted weapons of the Kirishima or the Earth cruiser types fired at all. If the description is correct, they might appear to have a similar effect as Yamato's shock cannons against Gamilas warships. While the cruiser's bow gun is suggested to be the same diameter as Yamato's secondary turret cannons, the Kirishima's bow cannon is larger, though not nearly as large as Yamato's main batteries (14" bow cannon (36cm) vs. Yamato's 19" shock cannons (48cm)).

Though the technical files on Yamato2199.net do raise questions on accuracy as to the actual diameter of the weapons in question. Yamato's Wave Motion Gun appearing to be larger than 2 meters across and the scaled up nature of the Yamato verses her 1945 based counterpart make one wonder if the guns only increased their diameter by 2cm from 46cm cannon to 48cm cannon. The secondary battery increasing from 15.5cm guns to 20cm guns (light cruiser weapons to heavy cruiser weapons).

I don't think they're that large, at least in terms of how much of the Milky Way proper they've conquered. I get the feeling that expansion into the Milky Way has been relatively recent in Garmilas' history (past 50 years or so), and that Humanity was the first Post-Industrial race they'd actually come across, so controlling stuff between the LMC and Earth is just a matter of being there at all. Milky Way operations seem to be treated as more of curiosity compared to their more domestic concerns between the LMC and SMC.

Episode 8 shows Dessler sees the Yamato as a curiosity more than anything else. I think the analog with North Africa is appropriate though; it was never a war that Germany wanted to be involved in but because of the incompetence of the Italians they were forced to devote serious resources to the theater. You're also right that there's probably a significant domestic fleet for keeping the integrated races in line, as well as for enforcing things like taxation.

I think that's just probably a standard way of forming Battleship or Carrier Battlegroups; you're going to have one or two capital ships flanked by a screening force of Cruiser and Destroyer Squadrons. You're not going to find Jutland Style BB or BC fleet versus BB/BC fleet action.

Does Dommel deploy his force in one group? Would make more sense to divide it up into 10 or so Task Forces instead of trying to Zerg Rush the enemy all at once.

Quote:
Spoiler for Dommel's Forces:

That seems kind of silly, you're not going to want carriers exposed like that.

Quote:
Spoiler:
I have to wonder though, what kind of devastation would the Yamato have to wrack to warrant a fleet action of that size? That seems like genuine overkill, even with the Wave Motion Gun.

I don't think the Garmilas fleet would rate more than 100,000 ships of Destroyer or larger, and probably would be more on the order of 50,000 or even less; so 10k would be a massive portion of the Garmilas fleet marshalled for a single action.

Quote:
Spoiler:
Seems their doctrine is based more about overwhelming through numbers instead of big guns. Also since most Cruisers seem to carry squadrons comparable to the Yamato's, it seems like dedicated CVs would be somewhat redundant.

The question would be, "What will happen to the Gamilas Empire after Yamato presumably completes her trip to Iscandar and back?"

Spoiler for Specualtion:
I think this series is probably going to go out of its way to show all of the Milky Way and Satellite Galaxies' players are known from the start and not introduced in dribs and drabs, at least that's how I read it.
