My super quick summary

Vol 1
Boy meets girl. The 4 of them plus a detective went under the sea and above the heaven to save a not-so damsel in distress.
And lots of vehicles were thrashed along the way, especially the flying ones.

Vol 2
Okita "The Lady Killler" pt 1.
Monsters in the schools? Not a damn was given, must continue the school cultural festival.
Godzilla walked the face of Earth? X-Wing and Tie-Fighter shooting each other? God damn God wth are you doing? tenth month, huh?
Close the Box, and you'll wake up for your dream.

Vol 3.
Okita "The Lady Killer" pt 2.
Carnival Night was the SCF operation to kidnap Nobu, and there was a festival in the city that Okita planned to bring Yuki to as they first date was crashed by his other four friends . I think it was blown out of proportion when they send Gunship, Type 74, Apache, Cobra, F-16 just to stop the Red Bug.

Vol 4.
Nobu went FTL and leaved for the sake of others.

Spoiler for Novel Characters:

Sakaki Hiroshi
He was the main character, but was relieved in vol 2. A classmate of Okita and Sanada in Year 2 Class B,
Sakaki was also their room mate in Room 405 of the Golden Dark Blue school dormitory of the Private Seinan Boys High School.
Sakaki helped and supported Nobu who had the Esper-complex, and they became lovers.
During the School Cultural Festival, he was in charge of the scenario for the class self-made movie, A Blow Kiss by Cleopatra.

Komaki Nobu
She was the main heroine, but was also relieved in vol 2. Height: 158 cm, Weight: 45kg. Her 5 colored pictures set was already on sold three days after she transferred to Seinan Girls High School.
Nobu was Tsubasa class mate (Year 2 Class 2) and room mate.
Her peculiar power was telekinesis, and she could even move the Space Shuttle.
As Nobu was terrible with machines, she couldn't bought the train ticket on the first day when she transferred to Seinan, and that was when she met Sakaki.
Nobu was in the Brass Band, and she played the clarinet 2nd Part for the School Festival.

Okita Reirou
The lead character in Halation Ghost. A returnee from oversea, he was able to speak American English, Bronx slang.
Okita's favorite was the Hi-Lite brand smoke. He was a member of the Automative Club,
and his beloved bike was Kawasaki 750SS, aside of riding the Suzuki RH250.
Okita was also the member for the Climbing Club, Newspaper Club, Light Music Club (trumpet) that he visited from time to time, and was said to have his own Secret Fanclub at the girls' side of the school.
He was the Director for the A Blow Kiss by Cleopatra.

Narumi Tsubasa
Nobu's classmate and room mate in Room 432 of the Katsuragi-sou (Judas Dormitory). She had this secret
move, Tracy (Yamaha CZ125 fitted with DT200 engine).
Being the President of the Newspaper Club, she used her mastery in the Hokushin One-sword Style and the
wooden sword, Murasame Ranmaru to watch over her club members when they approached the date line of the
newspaper.
Okita was Nobu's natural enemy, and they always had something to argue for whenever they met.

Sanada Sasuke
Self-proclaimed "The 13th Generation Ninja from direct descendant of Tozawa Hakuunsai". He was good with
shuriken, which he had several with him, hidden. Sanada is a member of the Gymnastic Club, and while he
possessed the license, he did not have his own bike, so sometimes he would borrow one from the
Automotive Club.

Kirino Miyuki
She was Nobu's classmate, and Nobu's and Tsubasa's room mate in Room 432. Miyuki was the Vice President
of the Ikebana Club, and her nickname was "Hime". For the School Festival, she played the lead heroine
in Okita's movie.

Matsuda
One of the important person in the Nature Research Club, and was called the "Doctor". Matsuda lived in room
407. As he was an expert in Science, he was also in the position of adviser. In the pretext of
researching earthquake and geology, he possessed bombs. He had also planned to build nuclear bomb
during the School Festival. Okita called him "Mad Scientist".

Wada
Sakaki's classmate and Matsuda's roommate. He is a member of the Newspaper Club, and using his connection with OB (out of bound) Newspapers' employer, he could gather a wide variety of information.
An Informant.

Nanbu
Sakaki's classmate and Matsuda's roommate in Room 407. Nanbu was the president of Automotive Club. His favorite ride was nitro-fitted remodelled Yamaha RZ350R and Honda CB750K0

Hijima Youko
She made her appearance in Halation Ghost. Youko was a member of the Newspaper Club, and the occupant of
Room 237 of Katsuragi-sou. Youko gave her Silver Cross to Okita to exorcise the Dracula that kidnapped Hime at the school's large Greenhouse.
At the start of her 2nd year, she met with accident during the Golden Week, and died after being in coma
during the School Festival.
The truth is that she was supposed to be ferried to World of Death/That World, but she ran away from the
Guide as she could not forget Okita (her unrequited love), causing a hole that connected "This World" to
"That World" to open, and "Dreams" came gushing out, triggering Supernatural phenomenons.

Sol Cosmic Force (SCF)
A super secret multinational group that able to mobilize the military of the powerful countries. The Star Bow Project objective was to fight the butthurt alien that tried to confine humanity on Earth after the advent of nuclear technology ....IIRC :P

Isaac Silvester
An academician of Parapsychology from the Soviet Union Scientist Academy and the main staff of Project Star Bow.
Isaac was in charge nurturing the Espers's ability and developed the XCI-40 Induction Device. He also helped Yuki to control her Psycho-crusher abiility.

Kazusa Yuki
SCF Star Bow troop youngest Ensign (15 years old), and an Esper with ability index of 135. Her original ability was Super A-class Telepath, but later turned to C-class telepath and Psycho crusher. (iirc Saori said Psycho-crushing was a mutation from Telepath).
As a Psychocrusher, she was able to channel out 20 tonne TNT class shock wave.
She infiltrate the Seinan Girls High in order to kidnap Nobu. Yuki joined the Year 2 Class 2 and lived alone in
Room 443. Her 8 pictures set were already on sale the first day she transferred to the school.
After Tsubasa saw her drawing of someone that resembled Nobu, the Newspaper Club President asked her to help out
with color illustrations for the Newspaper.
After Okita and the gang knew her identity, they carried out operation to seduce her, but she had the faint feeling of attracted to him. (Okita's love letter, written by Sanada and delivered by Sakaki through Tsubasa was the 35th letter, as there were love letters from other male students ). When they escaped from the Blue Search (mobile fortress at Lagrange point), Yuki activated her psycho-crusher ability to stop the collision between the UFO and Okitas, and died ;_;. Seeing this, Nobu made up her decision at the end of Last Letter.


Others
Hirasawa Chiaki
A private detective hired by a Certain someone to protect Nobu. The SCF called him "Red Bug", and his father Ranjuurou was also marked by those guys.

Mikimoto Saori
A "Foretune Teller" at the bar Counter Mirror in Kabuki District. Saori was also the SCF's target, and a class A telepath along with other abilities. Her ability index was 140.
From the beginning of the 20th Century, she appeared and dissappeared all around the world, and her looks had never change.

Master
An informant who worked at Diana Coffee Shop in Kobe. He was well-versed with details regarding SCF and other countries, as his ability was above the CIA and SIS. Master also acted as intermediate between multinational companies.

Armorer
Had an antique shop near the coast of Shounan. Looked like a nice old man, but behind the back he was "Be it nuclear missiles or neutron bomb, there is nothing that he could not obtain" weapon supplier. The Armorer supplied Chiaki with the weapons during the Carnival Night.

The Guide
The chaperone for This World (Physical World) and That World (Spirit World). He wears black suit, black hat, and white hand gloves (Okita referred him as the Death God and Undertaker). Time intervention and stop, Teleportation, Memory alteration were among his abilities.
His higher-ups include the Archangels, Lucifer, and King Enma. The Guide asked Okita and his merry friends to close
the Pandora Box beneath Seinan, and Okita wanted him to revive Youko in return. He said he would tried, and as expected, he could not deliver. The Guide asked Okita if he believed in Rinne Tenshou (furigana was Reincarnation) and asked Okita to wait as he would handle the process. Youko said to Okita it was alright, as she was happy in the end.

After the first date was disrupted, Okita said he was sorry, but Yuki replied, "If it was real, I would be happier", and returned home alone. Chiaki came and said they did the wrong things, as Yuki had read their mind, and knew that they knew that she came to get Nobu. Oki remembered Yuki's last word, and came to Tsubasa to ask Yuki to come for the city festival for a real date. Nobu alone with Sakaki said they (the espers) never wanted to be born as one, and it must be sad for a person to know what others were thinking. Okita went to Matsuda to ask if he knew how to deal with Telepath. Matsuda asked if Okita was going to go against a "Satori"

Actually I remembered that Nobu asked Yuki if the space development is so important that the SCF are willing to do anything.

I'm going to go ahead and fanwank in my head that Nobu established the Galactic Empire in MiniPi and went conquering 1 billion planets, with love.

^You got the order backwards?

Well if you were talking about Halation Ghost, other monsters coming out from the hole were Sea Serpent (splashing out from the School swimming pool) Not-King Ghidorah (flying above the school when the boys were playing football, and it wasn't Ghidorah because it had 2 front legs and not as yellow as the original one), Yuki Onna (causing blizzard inside boys dormitory, Okita was able to measure her 3 sizes before being "attacked", and Youko saved him again), Werewolf (running inside girls' dormitory), mermaid, Unicorn, Golem. Matsuda(?) cosplayed as Frankestein.

The starting Supernatural phenomenon in book 2 was an earthquake inside the school building, but there was no shaking outside. The students thought it was a poltergeist.

There was a scene where the characters have to pass through Hachi Daijigoku. Wiki translated is as Naraka, and English equivalent were Hell and Purgatory
Oh and they ran into Medusa and a pack of werewolves before meeting with the 創造主 (Creator) and closed the Box.

^Just a 21 years old fella creating Light Novel 29 years ago :P...according to Tanigawa Nagaru at least. [side note 3]. And apparently Nagato Yuki is a homage to Kazusa Yuki.

I have no internet at home right now, so office it is, and I don't have the books with me right now. Please correct me regarding these characters.

Spoiler for SCF:

Keeler.
The Operation Commander for the Moon Base and mobile fortress Blue Search. He seems to have deep connection with Chiaki, as SCF even offered the later to join the force.
In vol 1 he ordered the capture of Nobu, and when the main characters escaped the Moon, he ordered Noelle and Mike to shoot down the space shuttle Shang-ri La.
In the final volume, Keeler had a discussion with with Isaac regarding the Espers are the aliens, and they walked among the human. They are the next step of evolution that could withstand faster-than-light journey, and they eventually will become Gods.

Noelle and Mike.
Two trained Esper pilots who fended off the alien attack on the Moon Base in vol 1. They also transported Yuki from Moon to Earth, and the Espers on board demonstrate their abilities when they destroyed the UFO that tried to block their way to Earth.

C. McKee
The one who piloted the chopper when SCF kidnapped Nobu in vol 1. He also confronted Chiaki in the final volume, warning the later to be careful of Saori.

Captain Alcott
The captain of submarine Cassandra. He transported the main characters to Yellow Search (under ocean base, near volcano). In the final volume, his submarine was tasked with finding the 5 main casts that stranded on an island when they escaped Yuki and Dr. Isaac.

IIRC, the Sanada joked about the it is not shocking if the island they ended up on could have one or two Mothra and King Kong

I read someone at 2ch felt disappointed with Sensei as MiniPi didn't have the flare that he (commenter) felt from Yousei Sakusen, HoshiPi, ARIEL
For me, as an RF/Microwave Engineer, I am excited with the use of radar/Electronic Warfare in MiniPi, so I'm good.

Now, waiting for Yousei Sakusen anime......

That's so weird seeing the new modern art for Yousei Sakusen.
I'm probably the only person in this entire board that read the series back in the mid 80s, real-time.

In fact, I still own them.


Also, the two books to the right you see in this picture is Star Dust City, it's a spiritual sequel to Yousei Sakusen.
In fact, the characters are literally reincarnation of character in Yousei Sakusen, but in a future setting.
I haven't read Miniskirt Pirates, but I wonder if SDC has connections to it.

EDIT: I have tons of these good ol' sci-fi novels from the 80s-90s, before the term "light novel" got applied to them.
You will see me vocally criticizing the current state of light novels, which people try to tell me I'm just stereotyping and not speaking from experience.

I hope one day not only Star Dust City, but other novels that you've spoke of will be reprint so it will be easier on my eyes. I can't afford the time and money for Yahoo Auction, so reprint is my only hope . I'm still wondering why there is no reprint for Gaia Gear...

Staying on topic, I heard that Youko and the Silver Cross that she gave to Okita do appear in SDC. My favorite of the 4 books is definitely Halation Ghost, and my favorite characters are Okita, Youko, Yuki, Tsubasa, Sanada, Chiaki, and The Guide.
Most people would regard Tsubasa as a 'bitch' to Okita, but when she got herself into Yellow Search, stopped Okita from seeing a comatose Youko etc, I knew that she is much like Okita; willing to go the distance for her friends. Her sword style is apparently the one that Sakamoto Ryouma practiced.
The use of Daydream Believer (Monkees) for the dance was nice

Back to off-topic, Mouretsu Pirates is nominated for Seiun in Media Category. Good luck to both Sensei and Director Satou. Though Sensei didn't involve with the anime, and I don't know if he was not satisfied with MoPi just like when JC Staff adapted ARIEL (), but the anime seemed to have effects on the writing of vol 9. But whatever.
