I wish I had more money to travel when I was unemployed but that wasn't the case. Time or money always fighting against me.

My friend saw the emperor on his birthday Dec 23rd, I decided to skip it though.

Money was a problem when I was younger, and time when older.

Actually, it's better to apply for the guided tour with the imperial household agency. During the public appearances the place is packed

I did just that on my last trip to Japan in 2007. That is part of the reason I didn't go see the emperor this time, there were others things I wanted to do instead.

My friend said he got in right away though and even got some good video of the emperor's speech.

Speaking of blizzards

Here's Kanazawa Castle amidst one....I was actually sweating when I took this though, having ran around the perimeter looking for the entrance ^^;

But that's normal for Kanazawa, actually most of the north coast... it is not though for Tokyo! Even today with the sun shining since dawn, there are 5+ cm of snow left... yesterday it was snowing so heavily that I could not eve see the Shinjuku skyscrapers... weather like this I haven't experienced since I moved away from Munich

Well it is exceptionally cold this year in Japan. That blizzard was December. Even the hatsuyuki came very early.

In fact many of the locals were commenting about it...

So~ I may be heading back to Japan again this coming April / May. When I was back in Vancouver for Chinese (Lunar) New Years in February, I reconnected with a bunch of dear old friends back from high school.

We had always talked about going to Japan, just us guys, and following the cherry blossoms. Yes, before anyone says it, this is not that trip -- the cherry blossoms will largely be over.. That said though, 5/6 of them have all decided to take 2-weeks off from work to go. I can't take that much time off, maybe a week max, so I'll join them partway or near the end. We'll have a Kyoto native with us alongside a bunch of guys that have never been before .. so the question is when I join them, I've been given the option to "semi"-direct the trip, seeing as I may be joining them after the traditional tourist stuff is over. So, question is where should I suggest we go?

tl;dr -- wil may be going back to Japan again. Short trip. Meeting friends for the 2nd half of their trip 2-week trip. Aside from typical tourist stuff, where should we go? We'll likely be sticking to Honshu. It's a "boys trip" so .. yeah, I'm going to get totally smashed

Wait, you mean Japan is bigger than Akiba?

Don't take any advice from me.

You know even enjoying the nerdy aspects of Japan I wasn't that impressed with Akiba (I didn't go on my last trip but went in 2007).

I found Nakano Broadway much more interesting and impressive.

Akiba is far superior for eroge and games...

Nakano is more general Anime, Light Novels and Manga

Depends what you are looking for I suppose.

Harajuku and Shibuya are also nice....The visual kei and fashion aspect is also worth it if you have spare cash

LOL probably why I was not impressed since this is an aspect I am definitely not into.

I did like the Animate more in Akiba than I did the main one in Ikebukuro though.

I was thinking more in regards to figures. They have a lot of rare figures and items (lots of lottery and prize stuff) for good prices.

I love Harajuku both for Meiji shrine near by and it feels less "busy". I also love Kitty Land.

Well, Akiba has figure stores, but most of it is hidden in those small buildings in the backway.
Not to mention Akiba has that "adult speciality" shop where as you go higher, the broaden your mind becomes...

I accidentally brought my fiance to those higher floors that are "No Ladies" because we missed the sign and she was curious. She had a BSOD moment and we left.

But that is another reason I prefer Nakano, it's just easier to find what you are looking for and not run into things you definitely were not looking for.

Also I actually found some cute non-anime things in Nakano too.

One day when I have the time and money, my objective when visiting Japan is to go to Shirakawa. I'll leave it for you all to determine why there instead of cities like Akiba and Nakano.
