That girl in the top picture looks a lot like Tamako. Her mom?

After the wonderful 8th episode, there are a few curious things for me.

- What is the importance of the "scent" both Dera and Choi have mentioned?

- What is the meaning of Choi's wistful side glances?

- Will the Prince ever show up to rescue his subjects from the Bunny Mountain black hole?

- Is the continuing use of "the Prince's bride" intentional by the writers or just a translation joke? The Princess Bride is one of my favorite movies.

Damn it all KyoAni, why must you activate my tear ducts so?

That was a really good heartwarming episode and I loved the flashback sequences.
Now all I want is a spinoff where Dad and the bloke from the records and coffee shop put the band back together.

I ended up liking the Dad's story more than Anko's, much to my own surprise since I like Anko a lot. It was incredibly sweet and touching. Seems like Tamako takes after her mother whereas Anko takes after her father.

Anko was adorable as always. Her issues were about the nerdy kid once again, and the one who helped her was... Mochizou! He's a good brother-in-law (ah! he wishes he was!). Dera was also helpful, sort of.

So, do you think Tamako managed to remember Mochizou's brithday on her own or was it Anko who reminded her as a way to thank Mochizou? I'm leaning toward the latter. The only thing Tamako's got in her mind is mochi.

Mocchi... she's better at remembering your birthday than you are at remembering hers! You should be ashamed!

Even though I don't approve of things that promote Mochizou x Tamako, that was still a slick move by Tama-chan. I can't argue with something like that. Well done, girl.

I would complain that the tune Tama's been humming sounds nothing like that song, but I know from personal experience how it's possible to get just a fragment of a tune in your head and over years have it get warped around into something quite different.

Kanna was good again in this episode.

Next week looks like good times for Midori.

Really liked Tamako's dad's scenes this week. So the song Tamako remembers from her mother's humming was a song her dad wrote for her mom. That opening scene was just great. Nice job of Tamako helping out Anko. Mochizou was crying that Tamako remembered.

Let's be serious here. We all know Tamako wouldn't have remembered (she only got that mochi on her mind and mind on her mochi), so it was Anko that probably reminded her. :P

Tamako Market 09 - 溺愛上等!

I really liked the parallelism they had going with Anko and Tama's dad, especially the wordplay. That's how you use motifs and themes effectively. Though I have to ask a question - of this season's little sisters, is Momo or Anko the best? Their shows are in different genres and their roles are different... but they make pretty strong showings. Also, I like that we got to see Tama's mom, even if it was in flashbacks. That was Yoko Hikasa as Hinako, for the record.

If Dela's looking for a good way to memorize shopping ingredients, he could just ask Kaoru to sing the Curry Song. This was the first episode where Choi was just part of the background cast, and she blended in naturally enough. It's like she's been there forever now. Everyone in the district has better timing than Marii when it comes to the pestle and mortar (not that that's difficult), and it's also more reason for Kanna to be awesome.

This episode worked romance into the plot, but never in a way where I felt like it would take over the plot. Friendship and the community spirit were just as vital to this episode as they were to all the others. I don't mind romance as a plot element, I just don't want discussion of it derailing all other elements - and that hasn't happened yet, nor do I think it ever will.

I knew Keiji Fujiwara had a decent singing voice, though the only songs I've heard him on are his song as Nagare from Mayo Chiki! and "One wish, one day" (and "Jingle Bells") from Go-Busters, so hearing him sing in another context, and a love song at that, was really nice. Replacing the ED theme and giving another minute and a half or so of animation was a good choice on the staff's part. Oh, and he sang the enka ending to Appare! Tenka Gomen [Matsuri], but that's only partially related.

This episode was firing on all cylinders, from the flashback beginning to the montage ending, and everything in between. This series may not be capturing it in the exact same way, but the spirit that permeated through K-ON! is alive and well here. And may be even more so next week. A Baton Club episode and a Midori episode? Sign me up.

Also, those twins in said Baton Club have a really weird curl hairstyle. I want to know more about them. (I was not expecting to write this much. It just sort of happened.)

You might be able to assume that, but it doesn't show it and you can't prove it. Maybe she had this planned ahead of time and had Anko keep it a secret on purpose. Maybe Anko just didn't know. Maybe our little Tama-chan is actually a bit deeper than she tends to appear, and her sadness over always having her own birthday forgotten leads to her making sure not to miss those of her friends.

Don't be so quick to write Tamako off completely.
