It's not like there was any other alternative, though, not after ep 23. I still say this all was a bad idea, especially because I can't imagine how they're going to wrap everything up decently in only one episode, but at this point... whatever.

Anyway, as for episode 24...

Point 1.
Spoiler for Kiroumaru:

Point 2.
Spoiler for Saki:

Point 3.
Spoiler for grumbling about Satoru + novel comparison:

Point 4
Spoiler for the rest:

Well that episode accomplished a whole lot of nothing. It almost seems impossible that next week's episode is really the last. If the child really thinks he's a bakenezumi, then Kiroumaru is probably their only hope against him.

Man, this episode really flew by. It's a lot of chasing and talking though so I wonder how this will all end up. Nonetheless, it's as tense as usual.

Woah... Cliffhanger... *sigh*

This episode passed by so quickly, I was barely able to catch my breath. At least now we know that Kiroumaru is truly honorable in helping out Saki and co., although he did admit that his original intentional to go to Tokyo was to find weapons of mass distructions in order to defeat the humans so that they could survive. Which is the same goal (defeat humans) as Squealer, but for a different purpose (Squealer wanted conquest, while Kiroumaru wanted survival).

Saki now apparently has an Obi-Wan-Kenobi in the form of Shun to help her figure out ways to get out of the situation. Is he truly dead? Is that a form of Shun parked inside her head? Well, at least Saki and Shun can now be together forever.

As for the fiend, it now realizes that it is human, but it wants to reject that realization. What to do next, Saki? One possiblity is to create an illusion of a human in the form of one of the Squealer's men, and have the fiend kill the human only for it to be realized as a queerat. Okay, I don't really have another solution at this point that would allow all the good guys to survive. Also, with this episode, I guess it also confirms that the fiend did not kill the Giant Hornets troops, but only stopped their arrows. So why did the Giant Hornets troops end up as piles of body chunks in that battle?

Btw, how is this Maria's fault again? I mean, Saki state early on that if Maria was not born, a lot of people would not have died. Uh, and Mamoru is just there as a birth device donor who did not create the whole problem by running away (not really his fault, but still the reason). Has Mamoru helped out in any situation throughout the story, or is he an antagonist to cause problems and conflicts (and serve as the obligatory doormat)?

I like Mamoru, I'm sure that I would have been reduced to a whimpering mess when I was 12 years old during the camping trip just like he was, and I think he would have grown up to become a cool and competent person with time (I enjoyed the scant bits of dialogue he received in the second story arc, he was already quite a bit cooler at 14 than he was at 12), but the honest answer to this question is 'nope.' Mamoru's not an antagonist, but he's not much of an asset... he's rather useless during his limited screentime. His role in the story is to illustrate the feelings of those that are destroyed by the depravity of their world, in contrast to those who are brave enough to rise against it.

Hm, I think Saki performed quite well this episode, and very clearly showed the stability and strength that Tomiko spoke of. She's still thinking clearly and trying to do the right thing (or the more idealistic thing, anyway, which is also the more difficult route than "It's a fiend, let's blow it away") despite her stress. Unless you mean her "bros before Minoshiros" moment, which was indeed pretty sad. ;_; Poor little guy. What is Kiroumaru's reason for disliking Squealer so much, by the way?

I remember Triple_R saying that Yakomaru's appearance will take on a grander feeling due to his being scarce and hidden for so long, and that's completely true; it was quite the rush hearing his voice again, an impact that will surely be even greater next episode whenever he makes a direct appearance. Hope Saki and Satoru manage to kill him next episode. Shin Sekai Yori is a complex world full of morally gray characters, but there's one simple truth in this complicated world that rings eternal: Yakomaru is a dick and needs to die. I've disliked him since learning that he never had any intention to keep Maria and Mamoru safe.

After the last few episodes I wanted to applaud Kiroumaru's voice of the audience speech "don't give up Saki, you can do it!". Following that, it was pleasing to see Saki realize something meaningful & take action not once, but a few times.

Even if her decision to save Satorou is pragmatically horrible (sure death of rampaging child vs some unsure (at best) chance of reconciliation), it made perfect sense for her character & I applauded her emotionally at the same time as logically raging against her. Saki being the only one left from group 1 would be such a painful fate for her (though I am not counting it out, given this anime so far ..).

The mirror bit was insightful & even if the child didn't fully react as Saki hoped, it seems like it could be vulnerable to death feedback if it kills one of them. If it realizes this, that might give them quite a bit of flexibility in dealing with the situation ... and it might mean that the child can't continue it's killing rampage of the rest of the village, even if both Saki & Satorou die.

Death feedback realization seems almost too easy ... as that would let Saki & Satorou kill the other 'rats while only Kiroumaru is vulnerable to the child. Of course it's hard to say how rational the child is, even if it's not a fiend.

If I was Squealer, I might suddenly prefer all the humans dead and to wait on the next brainwashed child coming of age ..

If we're going for the "maximum tear generation" ending next week ... I'll go with:

"Bros before Minoshiros" might be the best line I've read throughout this entire season

I vaguely recall someone mentioning that this last arc has pacing more on par with a feature film than an actual TV series. I'm inclined to agree, and almost want to marathon from the beginning of the third arc to the final episode next week.

But it's a pity they didn't have time to to tell what Kiroumaru's problem is with Squealer, they only hinted at it. :/ (maybe if they hadn't wasted so much time in ep 23 and weren't trying to milk the drama by ending it like that...)
Kiroumaru, cool even when he is slathering on bat guano like it's nothing.

I'd like some clarity on his issue with Squealer, as well. I'm guessing it's that he chose survival of his colony over the supremacy route?

Well, the opening ended up being a fairly hilarious way to start the episode, particularly because of how effective and strong the last cliffhanger was. Good old bait and switch! At least it was over quickly.

Also, completely irrelevant, but good lord Maria (and Mamoru, I guess... /s) sure had one beautiful child. That is a boy, correct?

Another random observation: In the flashback of the town massacre, they added the facial tattoos to his face. I guess that was a production mistake that will be fixed on BDs. If only they actually fixed the bad art throughout the show...

Kiroumaru was really a key. He reminded Saki and Satoru that so many lives were sacrificed to get what they are having now. I really glad he didn't betray Saki and Satoru after all.

Saki care about Satoru finally. He is the only one she could protect so far and should have. Satoru has been protecting her all along. This is a Saki's moment to shine. Tomiko is special because she can outlive the others, on the other hand Saki is special because she has Shun inside her.

well still not definite if kiroumaru is for or against them at this point, but it seems really is against yakomaru and he is honorable, though he did admit he went to tokyo previously to find weapons of mass detruction for use against humans. He did save them a couple of times in this episode too, yet was that rock fall his fault? ah need to wait till next ep. to be absolutely sure.

if they can't convince mari+mamoru child he is human maybe they should just fool it that they are bakenezumi. Anyway if he is not akki then who killed Kiroumaru's soldiers, blobs of flesh, remember? guess we'll know the answer to that next week too.

Saki's decision was expected from an emotional viewpoint, but cringe-worthy from a logical viewpoint. Sacrificing Satoru to save all of humanity is obviously the best choice. All the effort they put into retrieving the Psychobuster (and Inui's death) was wasted.

Now I wonder what Saki's plan is. If the "akki" can't kill Queerats, the most logical thing would be to ask Kiroumaru to kill him but Saki wants to save Maria's son. I can't conceive a way to reason with the "akki" when he doesn't even know human language.

As for Kiroumaru's hatred towards Squealer, I don't think it needs an explanation. I mean, the cunning bastard exterminated his colony!

He didn't kill Kiroumaru's soldiers, he only disarmed them. Yokomaru's rats finished them off.

He is dead. He already said what he was - obviously people can interpret it in many ways, but I think the safest route is to take his words at face value, I mean he probably knows best. (As for being together forever, well... I'm sure the next episode will conveniently forget to address the Shun issue other than "and the memory of my first love blah blah blah" which I think will be the last line, but let's hope anyway.)

The kid took the weapons from Kiroumaru's army, and Squealer's army did the rest.

People keep reading way too much into that line... When Saki said that she just pointed out a tragic irony. Maria almost died when she was born. When Saki first heard this she was happy that Maria didn't die, but thinking back now, if Maria had died, this tragedy wouldn't have occurred. (She wouldn't have formed a close relationship with Mamoru, wouldn't have left with him, wouldn't have given birth to a son that Squealer could use as a weapon.) It's not her fault, it's a tragic twist of fate, the cruelty of the heavens, etc. etc.

Also, if we want to argue that Mamoru is just a plot device then what is Shun? Or Maria, has she ever helped out in anything or was she just there to be pretty and run away with Mamoru and conveniently give birth to the Antichrist the bakenezumi's ultimate weapon? If you take the characters out of their context then of course they're all plot devices.

I think Mamoru is very important to the story, just like how all five of them are important in their own way. Sure, he may not be "useful" as in "actually doing helpful stuff" but his presence, his feelings for and relationship with Maria, his eventual fate, etc. are important additions to the story and the world.

Well, aside of the fact that he's a two-tongued, backstabbing, colony-destroying fiend... Kiroumaru calls Squealer a monster (note the irony) who, driven by his hunger for power has lost the essence of their kind: the instinct to live and work for one's colony. Hiding behind the name of democracy he's trying to grasp all the power until he becomes a dictator. Kiroumaru says that even under the rule of humans bakenezumi had been allowed to develop and nurture their own culture and customs, and follow their own way of life, and now Squealer is about to destroy it all with his new world order. Basically, Kiroumaru doesn't want to allow the existence of the kind of bakenezumi society that lobotomizes their mothers and turns them into slaves.

Well, unless the anime changed his gender, he's a boy. He's supposed to be beautiful (he's the son of his parents, after all, both of them were pretty), but I think they went out of their way to make him look all androgynous with all that flowing hair and feminine body and everything, in the book Saki immediately assesses that he's a boy. (The hair is pretty lol though, he's like a walking shampoo commercial. "Hello, I'm Akki. I spend my life among dirty rat-people, chasing humans in underground caves full of bugs, water and bat shit. But my hair is always clean and shiny, because I use the secret formula...")

Saki was clearly hallucinating Shun. It was kinda sad too.
She also had her doubts about the fiend.
Her way of thinking was rather interesting.
It could be possible that the fiend never knew it was human.
The only problem is that getting close to it is extremely dangerous..
Looks like Saki was right about it, but the mirror thing kinda backfired.
Using Psychobuster was a good choice at the time.
Kiroumaru finally told the truth.

What a waste of episode!!!

*frustrated*

I totally felt like the animators were stalling on this one in order to build suspense for the final episode.

What they SHOULD have done was deal with the Fiend, and then report on the aftermath in the last episode.

I don't understand why they had to screw up the pacing towards the end!

Spoiler for Next Episode Preview:

Nah, I think this episode did things right - everything that happened in this episode was quite important. I think the episode that they were stalling on just to get the maximum drama was the previous one, ep 23, which they dragged out just so they could end with Shun. :/ I still say episode 23 should've ended with Satoru vs akki, or at least the preparation for it.

His hair is truly ridiculous. When they panned it in this episode, I had to stifle a laugh because of the exact context you just said Well, who knows, maybe Squealer provides him with only the best in hair maintenance products.

This is the first episode I feel was too slow paced. With only one episode remaining, I wish they hadn't spent so precious minutes on that chase. I'm afraid the ending is going to be rushed.

I'm totally fine with Saki's actions this week. At very least I am glad she finally took action! This is what I had been waiting for this whole arc. From a rational point of view, what she did was a mistake. It made perfect sense to sacrifice Satoru to save the rest of humanity. However, I can't blame her for following her heart. She couldn't let the only person remaining in her life die. Her decision to destroy the Psycho-buster was very selfish, but also very human. And thankfully, what I feared most didn't come to pass.

Kiroumaru was not a traitor! Hurray! Although he did reveal he had intended to destroy humanity as well, and I fully understand why. Humans apparently have a habit of destroying colonies for obscure reasons, and he was afraid his brethren would suffer the same fate someday. His would have been a fight for the survival of his species, not supremacy.

I hope he will survive, but I'm afraid he's going to sacrifice himself to kill the akki. He's the only one who can do it. If he survives, however, we're looking at a very happy ending. With Saki as the leader of the village and Kiroumaru as the leader of the remaining queerats, a world where humans and queerats are treated equally could become a reality. It will be a very long process though.

This is exactly what I argued in a previous thread. I fully agree with Kiroumaru's assessment of Squealer. The Queerats would be even worse off under his rule than they were under humans. If Kiroumaru had been the one leading this revolution, then I might have been able to support it. He is a very noble, selfless, brave and charismatic leader. Basically the complete opposite of Squealer.

A shame the anime probably won't expand on Yakomaru's true motivations. There's only one episode left and Saki and Satoru are not interested in talking things out anyway.
