This is not just simply about friendship. For Kodaka to acknowledge one relationshp is a slippery slope of sorts that leads to the next. The friendship is an easier denial - it's like when answering a marketing call, some times it's easier to feign ignorance, like you are not the person they are after for example than having to interrupt and reject them directly. And further, it is not like Kodaka is not actually enjoying the friendship even when not acknowledging it. Some people like to maintain defecto relationship instead of marriage as a formal contract.

Flags doesn't mean an obligation. Yes he's selfish, so is everyone else. The girls are also selfish - except Rika, none of them are considering the possible fallout with their advances. Imagine the MC is a girl, and all the girls are guys chasing this girl and are her friends, does the girl have an obligation to make a decision on the spot to 'clear the air'?

Kodaka doesn't yet consider a romantic relationship more valuable than a normal friendship. He's not pursuing one, so it is not unreasonable that he's unwilling to jeopordise what he currently values over something he's not sure about.

Agree 100%

People are complaining about Kodaka and the friendship, Kodaka is trying to SAVE the friendship.

^ Eh, he'll eventually come to that stage. Fortunately, someone hasn't made a wake-up call on the Neighbor's Club.

I wonder if a "pruning of useless clubs" scenario would be good enough to shake the Neighbor's Club. "If this club is designed to bring students without friends to get together, how will I be sure that the club is doing its purpose?" Of course, this would need Yozora to anger the Student Council President so much (attacking her capabilities as a leader, perhaps) that she would resort to a ruling like this to show that she is boss (and doing the budget management team of the school a favor).

Again, Yozora's actions would backfire, and the Neighbor's Club would be a ticking time bomb that would explode unless the members would admit "what they are to each other".

Kodaka's bogging down the plot. Time to bring on some rockets.

Time is not gonna save their friendship. They will come to Kodaka's most feared scenario eventually, and Kodaka's feigning of ignorance is only biding them time.

Wouldn't the way to resolve the dilemna is to change the style of the club? Instead of finding friends, they can change it to further cultivate the friendship and build stronger bonds as well as bring in new people who needs friends. It is an ability to grow, instead of stay stagnant. If someone can drill that in his head, then all can be saved and everybody can move to the next level of fixing their problem.

Really enjoying this but the lack of back story notwithstanding I'm going to be intrigued how this will end up. Strangely I'm watching this one more than just about any other this season.

The issue is that the style is changing outside of his control. Instead of good examples like you mentioned, you got girls thinking about what kissing Kodaka is like, what being married to him is like, and even doing the nasty. And he's at a point where sooner or later, they could give a damn about the friend stuff and just want him.

mine point is exactly who kodaka even is avoiding admit their already friends, and run like he's fear who if their become friends he gonna lose his "harem", and prefer see the girls making all that weird things while the girls are trying to learn to make friends while him just watching like a entertaiment for himself.

is not just about romance, but how he is handly with everything, justing faking the dense and asking for friends to just ignore then, for me he is a selfish and coward.

if him indeed dont want romance why he keeping raising flags with all girls and i believe who he even gonna try to rise with the "new girls".

He's not ignoring them as friends at all. He helps them through rough times, hangs out with them, helps them when they need it, and pretty much looks out for them. It has nothing to do with Harem, he does not care about romance at all, which is why he's so desperately trying to avoid it.

The sad part is that Kodaka is not raising any flags, they are the ones pressuring him. You got Sena pushing marriage on him, Rika openly wanting to have sex, and Yozora thinking about kissing him given the opportunity. He just wants to keep it where it is now.

Some of you HIGHLY underestimate our cast members though. These are not just some girls you can say "I don't want to be with you like that", move on and still be friends. No, these are people who were pretty much outcast emotionally. Getting rejected from him will only make them want to get away from the world and NEVER try to connect with people. Kodaka doesn't want that. He wants everyone to keep meeting up afterschool and doing what friends do.

but for me he is the one doing the less things, in the movie productions he done almost nothing, another good exemple when him promissed to pegasus not let yozora keep bulling senna, he dont making nothing, even rika noticed who he only want play the role of "viewer" and only really help if really something troublesome like when him protected senna in the pool from the 2 guys and he even doing this after see who he dont have any other option, the way he is acting is clear who he is avoiding make progress but at same time he dont want lose what he have(some girls who are in love with him).

him even made clear who he dont want to progress because he fears what can happen if their really make a real progress he fear lose the club if the club improve(a nosense fear).

Not fair, they wrote him out the movie. In fact, he was looking forward to being the main character, but then they made him the little brother.

Don't agree cause Yozora and Sena seem to be growing without the need of Kodaka.

It's a decent fear because the progress isn't the kind he wants. You can't just think about what he could gain (a girlfriend), but what he would lose. Which is just about everyone else. It's almost guaranteed if he chooses one, the others will distance themselves from him and probably the whole group. It's just not worth it to Kodaka.

it's not only romance but also "friendship" he even dont let rika say who their already being friends, he not scary only love but also have "real friends", kodaka have fear the make "real friends" it's not just have a girlfriend, he prefer this "almost friends" case than be real friends.

Some of you are over thinking the whole friend thing and misunderstanding why he didn't want it to be said.

He KNOWS they are all friends, he likes that. The problem is that he wants to keep it that way. If he says "we're friends", that won't be enough. Next you'll have Rika, Sena and Yozora asking "can we be more than friends".

What Rika said is what's important, its taking the next step, not where they currently are that's the problem. Although she understands him, at the same time, she's also trying to win his love as she's also a competitor. So of course she wants to move forward, she wants to date him too.

come back again to "romance" you say who he dont want to "hurts" the girls feelings, what you thing is worse, trying to talk in a friend way who he dont want lovers and just friends even if this gonna hurts then but this can be easy healed , the girls dont look like the type who gonna turn in crazy and try to suicide if him reject then now while the flahs still at bay, than keep raising flags until he reach a point with no return where he gonna need choose on 2 options:
1 - choose one girl and really hurting the others(after too much raised flags where it's gonna hurt more than now)
2 - RUN acting like a coward because he can't choose one in a situation who himself created due to net let the things right and keep making the girls haveing hopes.

a good exemple is him still keeping the marriage, he not really rejected yet( not warned his father or pegasus about canceling the marriage), he still holding the marriage at bay not really put a end.

He can't choose because there is no choice, he doesn't want romance. The viewers want to force him to choose, yet Kodaka himself doesn't care. Him finally having friends is 10 times more important than getting a girlfriend. In fact if he could, he would probably reject ALL of them right now if he knew they would stay friends. Problem is, they wouldn't.

He didn't create it at all, you're throwing blame on him. He has not told one girl he wants to be in a relationship, they are the ones who want it. Hell, Sena and her father have just thrown a marriage on him. He's not even leading them on, they are just so crazy they are leading themselves on, remember these girls have issues. Sena asked him point blank what he thinks of having a girlfriend, he told her he just wants friends. What does her and her father do? Announce he's engaged to her...These people can be crazy at times.

When I said slippery slope, I was referring to recognise the friendship type relationship - will then lead onto the next. For now, Kodaka can conveniently hide behind the fact that 'we are not even friends, don't even think about girlfriends'. Which is what he wants, as opposed to what other's want. Nothing wrong with that, and if shit hits the fan, he'll suffer the consequences.

I sometimes wonder if people don't understand harem at all. The main character is NOT the male. The main characters of a harem are the girls. The male is the narrator and something to push the plot along, to create events that will showcase the girls. All these talks of who suits who better is moot - the viewer will pick their favourites anyway.

Also, the comment about Kodaka promised to protect Sena just shows some are not really getting the characters. Of course Kodaka would be not interfere when the girls are showcasing exactly who they are. Whilst it's nice to have the 'cute' sides of each girl character as some sort of contrast, the main drawing point are their zennen (unfortunate) personalities. And if you are someone who actually hates those attributes, you are missing the point. I find it incredibly cute when Sena is being the oujou and Yozora is oblivious to the effect of what she's doing, more so than their 'deredere' moments since if that's what you after, there are more standard harems out there.

man you dont see who he keeping rise flags with the girls(even if not what he wants?) this is very clear on both anime and LN, there's no choice for now but if him keeping doing the same and dont really talk with the girls he gonna ending need to choose one of then or lose all because their can't gonna be satisfied with this mess(even normal peoples not gonna agree with what he keep doing) it's not like just "that girls" but any girl at a long term gonna start to be angry with him "fake dense" and indecision if him want friendship, love, if want date any of then this is bad situation no matter you try to explain myself if i have a girl friend like him, who net let the things being clear if we are friends, if we gonna be lovers, their gonna become upset a long term option with this situation.

this is the point the right thing if he really want be friend with then is say to girls what he really want not just hiding himself in a shell of "dense" like rika said, again this is a shit and make the things ending even wors a long term.

BINGO....and that's the problem. But you know who's problem it really is? Not Kodaka's, but the rest of the girls. Kodaka is just nice enough to do everything in his power to prevent that.

If the girls are so selfish where they would allow one boy to get in the way of EVERYTHING they have earned, then they don't deserve friends. They deserve to be alone and friendless, a man reason why they have been for so long. They did this to themselves.

Rika, although she likes Kodaka, also understands where he's coming from, and for this reason, will play along with him. Sena and Yozora on the other hand are the spoiled ones.

Sena is use to getting anything she wants while Yozora is only doing what she's doing in the first place to get close to Kodaka. Imagine what happens if he straight up rejected them. They are not mature enough to handle that easily. In fact, they are most likely to distance themselves from the club.

i started to watch from the first season and really enjoyed the anime all the comics and was fine with him being just "dense" but since now who the truth come and him not a "dense" but a "lie" selfish and coward, i really started to hate him, because he remember me anothers harem MC who i really, really hated and wanted ending alone due to their selfish and cowardice, i really dont like most of the harem animes specially the ones where we have too much dense, coward, or chickening MC, i can standing with some others types like the MC of kore wa zombie desu ka or sora no otoshimono, but the type of kodaka really make me mad, this dont means who i gonna stop of watch because of him, i want to see the end, but for now for me kodaka entered in mine "hate zone" and gonna be hard for him to leave now.

Nobody is lying, big difference between lying and procrastinating. What is there for him to be truthful about? Unless you want him to just go to their face and tell them they have no chance with him and should just give up. That's too cruel, no matter how much truth is in it, and a real friend wouldn't do that at this stage of their relationships. What's even worst is that just as much as they have subtly hit on him, he has rejected them right back, they just can't take the hint.

It's cool they are being more truthful, but its not Kodaka's fault they developed feelings, that wasn't part of the deal. This was suppose to make friends, and they are doing that. But as I'm trying to say as well as potchip, friendship is not the issue here. It's the paths that opens after that is the issue. What happens when things don't go the way the girls want? Then what? Kodaka feels that what if is not worth losing his friends.

Remember what Rika was saying before Kodaka shut her off...she WANTS him to take the next step. She wants him to start choosing a girl. Why? Because she likes him and wants to have the possibility of being that girl. She's not speaking as a friend anymore, but a love interest and that's where things get messy. She'd rather him choose and the others get hurt, and Kodaka doesn't want that.
