I'm a bit disappointed it's not going to be a 2-courses, however, I agree with you.

I still think mecha will take a backseat and be an element instead of the focus of the story

I agree with this. Everything we've seen indicates that the mecha are a background element which represents the world Red comes from, and hence contrasts with the new type of world he encounters on Earth. The characters will likely be the focus of the story, and I won't be surprised if most of the action in the series are character action and combat instead of mecha action.

Isn't it also Kameda's speciality?

Can someone help get a moderator to change the title of this thread to Gargantia? The typo bothers me every time I see it. I made the thread before there was an official romanization for the name! >_<

By the way, the first two episodes of Gargantia were apparently released as special DVD-OVAs... and the RAWs have already surfaced in the usual places. On the flipside, the next episode will only come out in two or three weeks, so...

Episode 1-2

That was pretty much what I expected from the show from the trailers, so there's nothing really surprising here. It's a fun and light-hearted (sort of) show with a heavy adventure feeling (like Grandia and Xam'd I guess).

Red starts out as a child soldier on the frontlines of a deadly space battle where humanity makes their last stand against a mysterious alien threat, but when he accidentally falls out of a wormhole during the escape process he finds himself on an unknown planet which he later learns is Earth - the birthplace of humanity, long forgotten by his people. He finds himself in a culture he doesn't understand, with people speaking a different language, and a totally different way of life than what he's familiar with.

The way it is directed is pretty nice though, since it doesn't really rely too much on the actual misunderstandings and stuff to move the story forward. The characters aren't stupid or annoying, and there's a sense of strength and resolve in each of them, along with a good amount of levelheadedness and rational thinking. While the situation is pretty generic for the opening act of this sort of stories, the execution makes it as enjoyable as it can be.

I really like the way the colors look in the show, and the music and character animation do a great job of making the show feel fun and energetic. Even though it's probably Urobuchi's most light hearted and down to Earth story so far, there are definitely signs of an underlying bleakness in the story, especially in terms of how Red perceives the world being a soldier, and his value of human life contrasting against those of people who mostly live in a peaceful era.

It's definitely going to be interesting to see how the rest of the series develops, but I think it's obvious that the arrival of Red and his robot is what unbalances the state of the world as it is, and will likely escalate tensions beyond what people are used to because of its overwhelming power. How this ties to the portion of humanity in space where Red came from, and the alien threat, will also be interesting aspects of the show.

Wait, they speak different languages? So which one speaks Japanese, Red's people or Earth people?

First impressions felt like a mix of Star Ocean and Grandia.

It feels rather suspiciously upbeat from Butch Gen. Can't shake off the feeling that it's going to be another bait and switch from him. Is everyone going to live pass episode 3?

People seem to see Urobuchi's name attached to an anime and assume that there will be tons of death in the first half or something. I'm honestly getting sick of this because it's an oversimplification and blatant misrepresentation of what Urobuchi's storytelling is like. Let the anime speak for itself.

Neither. Japanese is simply the language for presentation to the audience. When a character who is speaking is meant to be understood by the audience, it's in Japanese, while the character who is not meant to be understood speaks gibberish. It works pretty well actually. Especially with Sugita translating stuff on-the-fly.

I don't really see him as having that much more or less death in his series than your average sci-fi mecha action show writer what have you. Certainly no more than is necessary to tell whatever story he's going for. I'm wondering if its just some sort of associative dissonance going on from the late 2000s when it really like anime with heavier themes and negative outcomes for characters were on a bit of a downswing.

To be honest, when I see Gen Urobuchi's name attached to a work, the level of darkness vary between his works as well the associated genres and themes. While there is always some dark aspects in most of his works, it doesn't always mean the story will turn mostly somber be it sooner or later. I can already see Gen overcoming somewhere in Psycho-Pass, maybe it's because he's now affixed to a political sci-fi writting with some character-driven elements. Even though Gargantia is perhaps intended to be Urobuchi's most lighthearted title so far, it means it gets darker later on, but also not as dark as Madoka Magica or Psycho-Pass I guess.

Maybe. Like the other guy said before me its hard to say at this point. I'm not to worried about the tone so much as where show takes us and what I take from it.
