There's also the involvement of the director, Kazuya Murata, to be taken into account. He has probably as much say in the creative decisions and direction of the story as Urobuchi if not more.

I have not watched the first two episodes, but I'm worried about the length of the show. With so many characters and even two "parallel" worlds with very distinct tones, it seems like a project that would benefit from being 2-cour. Are 12(15) episodes really going to be enough?

Murata and Butch are both credited for the original concept so I'll say they worked on it together. Murata definitely has more room to execution his vision though, since he's also the director of the series, and not just the writer. Visually the show screams Murata. His influence on FMA Milos and Gargantia is very obvious.

As for the series length, I don't really think the story will be that large and epic. It seems to be focused around Red and his experience in this strange "new" world. The elements from his world will probably come back into play at the end of the series as a means of his past following him into his present, but other than that, I don't think they intent on actually developing two entirely different settings. The main setting is Earth, and that's where the series will take place.

That was pretty much what I expected from the show from the trailers, so there's nothing really surprising here. It's a fun and light-hearted (sort of) show with a heavy adventure feeling (like Grandia and Xam'd I guess).

Red starts out as a child soldier on the frontlines of a deadly space battle where humanity makes their last stand against a mysterious alien threat, but when he accidentally falls out of a wormhole during the escape process he finds himself on an unknown planet which he later learns is Earth - the birthplace of humanity, long forgotten by his people. He finds himself in a culture he doesn't understand, with people speaking a different language, and a totally different way of life than what he's familiar with.

The way it is directed is pretty nice though, since it doesn't really rely too much on the actual misunderstandings and stuff to move the story forward. The characters aren't stupid or annoying, and there's a sense of strength and resolve in each of them, along with a good amount of levelheadedness and rational thinking. While the situation is pretty generic for the opening act of this sort of stories, the execution makes it as enjoyable as it can be.

I really like the way the colors look in the show, and the music and character animation do a great job of making the show feel fun and energetic. Even though it's probably Urobuchi's most light hearted and down to Earth story so far, there are definitely signs of an underlying bleakness in the story, especially in terms of how Red perceives the world being a soldier, and his value of human life contrasting against those of people who mostly live in a peaceful era.

It's definitely going to be interesting to see how the rest of the series develops, but I think it's obvious that the arrival of Red and his robot is what unbalances the state of the world as it is, and will likely escalate tensions beyond what people are used to because of its overwhelming power. How this ties to the portion of humanity in space where Red came from, and the alien threat, will also be interesting aspects of the show.

How's the animation ?

Any stuff stood out or it's classical anime level tv series ?

I hope it's better animated than PP was.

How many episodes for this series?
Is Gen back to 12' episodes tv series ?

For those of you keeping track, this means Cure Peace has been in exactly one mecha series where she isn't eaten in the second episode and exactly one mecha series where she is eaten in the second episode.

Suisei = Water Planet/Star, in this series it means a Planet/"Star" that is covered by "Ocean".

Gargantia = based from word "Gargantuan" which means "gigantic; enormous; colossal" and has similar meaning of the word "Grand" in Grandia.

I see what they did there.

Character animation is pretty good. Very charming and expressive. I'll just the first two episodes of Gargantia are certainly better than the first two episodes of PP, in probably every possible way. :P

The Gargantia Blu-ray Box sets which were announced at ACE are confirmed to contain English Subtitles, like most "big" Bandai Visual releases these days. The first set will be released on July 26 for 16,800yen, and will contain the first 4 episodes and a bonus OVA episode (full length episode).

Other goodies:
- Episode 1 will have two audio commentary tracks, one from the staff and one from the cast.

- There will be a special CD Book called Gargantia Logbook 1. It will be about 100 pages with a cover illustration by Hanaharu Naruko. It will contain an Audio Drama CD, a short comic drawn by Naruko (about 10 pages), and a short novel supervised by Urobuchi (about 40 pages), as well as Character design materials from the show and staff interviews.

- Also included is a 224 page storyboard book containing the complete storyboards for the first episode of the show by the director Kazuya Murata.

- Finally there's an Illustration Card Collection which includes 8 cards. They are illustrations which will be used as end title card for the broadcast as well as promotional stuff on the website. This is the first collection, and there will one in each of the box sets.

Box Set 2 will be out on September 25, and the final box will be released on October 25. Interestingly enough, the bonus OVA episode with the first box is labelled as "episode 14", so maybe one of the other boxes will have 5 episodes instead of 4? 13 episodes in total? We'll see.

Hmmm, looks like the episode count might be cleared up by this comment here: http://gargantia.jp/blog/?p=188

"新作OVAがⅠ・Ⅲに収録されるなど、豪華特典満載です!"

So only the first and third boxes will have an OVA episode, which means the second box likely has 5 regular episodes. That would make it 5 episodes per box (including the OVAs). 13 normal episodes, 2 OVAs in total.

In other news, it looks like we finally have the first look at villains. Probably the early villains in the first few episodes of the show. The Lobster pirates led by the female leader Rakeeji (Wreckage?):

Excellent first two episodes. I'm in. Liked the way they ran the story: no sneaking around hiding the truth, just figuring out how to deal with things and dealing with them. The animation was pleasing to the eye. The characters made sense.

Kanemoto Hisako was excellent in the role of Amy. And I loved the voice and approach of the young seiyuu playing the lead, Ishikawa Kaito (age 20). His first roles were last year, but this and Soda Manatsu in Red Data Girl are the only ones that will last longer than one episode.

Typical Japanese rip-off... in a few years we'll have the subbed blu-ray of the entire season out in Europe for the equivalent of about 400 yen.

Well, duh. You think that's only in Japan? A typical video games sells for $60 on release. A few years later you can get it for as cheap as 50c.

Great get for Crunchyroll. Wonder if the Urobutcher will surprise us by not killing off most of the cast.
