ahh kay thanks. Shin Megami, I've heard of that before. Is it a video game series?

Yes. It's actually among the first, if not the first, of the monster capturing/training genre of video games, which is amusing given how dark the SMT franchise generally is, while the majority of the games in the same genre (like Digimon and Pokemon) are more light-hearted. The franchise also has several subseries, Devil Survivor being one of them. The stories in the SMT franchise usually tends to see modern technology mixing with ancient mysticism and demon summoning. The shiny fellow in my avatar is one of the more well-known demons in the franchise.

Episode 1

This episode is relentlessly mediocre. The characters, the plot, the writing and so forth are okay, and they do meet the task of setting up the story of the show, but it's all handled in such a perfunctory way that it's hard to work up all that much enthusiasm for what's going on. I think that the show is being held up by the source material - it's like there's a checklist of all the things that had to be touched on in the first episode. The episode does manage to cover all of those items, but it does so without being able to do anything meaty with them. Hopefully, with the introduction phase out of the way, the show can move on to deliver the story better.

On the action front, I do hope that the production staff will decide to go with more long shots so that the magic can seem more substantial. That lightning attack by Byakko didn't look very good because close shots can't deliver the proper sense of impact.

While it's kinda weird that they did DS2 instead of DS1, DS2's dialogue is far more interesting than DS1 especially when it comes to the comedy and ecchi part. Like the game, the characters are a bit of slow starter when it comes to development but if they manage to get it right, this is should be another interesting anime to watch for.

Not looking forward to the word ecchi.

So should I be expecting a lot of fanservice?

Well there's an option to be flirty with all the girls in the game. Ecchi is the wrong word for it, more like harem-ish depending on how the studio decide on the script.

There's definitely room for fanservice in this series, if a couple of the character designs didn't tip you off to that. That being said I don't really get the feeling that they intend to emphasize that, though I guess it's too soon to say that for certain.

Either way, there shouldn't be "a lot" of fanservice, if any at all.

I dont' see it all that strange at all - Devil Survivor 1 is confined to just the Yamanote ring, while Devil Survivor 2 is a lot more expansive. Plus, Atlus is making Devil Survivor 2 Break Record while the first game is a lot older.

I'm playing through the game right now, and I'm not seeing any ecchi, just a bit of barely-innuendo dialogue. There are a few somewhat revealing costumes as well, if you're going to count that sort of thing. The first game had basically no fanservice at all, and so any amount would still qualify as more. Heck, even the Angel demon is modestly dressed this time round.

I am.
Spoiler for Non-story related dialogue choices:
But so far it doesn't look like Hibiki's the type to be trolling people, so I doubt that bit is going to happen.

That's actually the original Angel design from SMT I. The bondage version came from Soul Hackers, if I remember correctly.

It's not even a harem either when most of the female characters don't have romantic feelings for Hibiki

Thanks for the tip.

Honestly I can deal with a little fanservice here and there but when people use the term ecchi well that makes me think a bit more than a little fanservice.

Party member deaths are possible, though all of them can be prevented.

The Devil Survivor series as a whole is slightly darker than Persona because of the setting (being trapped in a city full of real demons vs a normal school setting where Shadows can only appear in certain areas and times), but not by much. It's still tame as far as MegaTen games go.

As for DeSu1 vs DeSu2 specifically, the difference in tone is similar to the difference between Persona 3 and 4. The former is slightly darker, while the latter is slightly better paced with more comedy spread throughout.

So in short, DeSu2 is more marketable to the masses

I think it's more the marketing angle that break code's slated to come out in a couple of months.

You're pretty safe here. Devil Survivor 2 seems to have less fanservice than the Persona 4 anime. It's certainly no Strike Witches.

Didn't the Persona 4 anime coincide with the release of Persona 4 Golden and Persona 4 Arena as well?

Not quite; Persona 4 Arena and Persona 4 Golden were released very close together (July 2012 and June 2012 respectively), but the Persona 4 anime preceded them by a fair amount since it started October 2011.

Persona 4 Arena was released on arcades first, on March 2012.
The second episode was quite slow paced for the most part and again almost identical to the manga version.
It's quite a shame that both opening and ending are almost non-existent if you look at the video (what's with OPs/EDs in this season?). The themes are OK I guess.

Yeah, I thought about that too. The anime was still running at that point, but I'm not sure that qualifies as the anime coinciding with the game release since it came out towards the very end of the anime.
