Late to the party. Just watched the 1st ep, and I really have to agree with duckroll:

It's very much what I expected from it, maybe a bit too by the books in some ways but it's a fairly standard opening episode which introduces the setting, lays out the basics and characters, and includes a major action sequence to show what the show has to offer.

Right off the bat I will say one thing which I know some people will probably disagree strongly with - Hirai's character designs absolutely work on the show. They're not cool designs nor are they good art, but he does have the ability to turn out a huge number of characters who look distinct and can be visually identified by the audience by their quirks. This is important because the show has a pretty large cast, and it helps to be able to make that connection early on. The other thing is that it's a pretty goofy show, so the characters all looking kinda dumb fits really well with the tone.

The CG action is really well done as we would expect from this being a major project for Orange. I think the action is well composed and uses the CG camera as would be expected for exciting looking action. The only downside is that similar to their work on Akito the Exiled, the CG explosions still look off. That's something they have to work on as they take on more of this sort of work I think, because they stand out from the rest of the visual composition.

Story-wise there isn't much to talk about at the moment. It's still very early on, but the comedy+action element works for me. The pace is pretty fast, and it doesn't waste time on drawn out stuff. The comedy feels a lot of a stand up stage production to me, where a lot of what makes the dialogue work is from the performance of the voice cast in delivering the lines. It doesn't rely on intant gags so much as setting a constant tone of lulz for most of the characters. We'll see how it progresses, but I like what it's doing.

Overall I'm just glad a show like this is even made at all. We have mecha shows every year, but most of them tend to be serious, and those who aren't tend to be over the top super robot stuff, or filled with perverted lewd jokes. It's nice to see someone actually produce a mecha show which is a mix of more "serious" shounen style action scenes and lighthearted character comedy about goofy characters while not in combat.

tl;dr - This was enjoyable, will keep watching.
Your post did a homerun in expressing my feelings.

Just... fail.
Ugly CG? Well, if one thing, I guess're you're lucky enough since you seem to haven't watched at least dozens of shows with crap CG compared to this ep.

Easily the worst this season? I take it you haven't seen Mushibugyou. Watch its debut episode this season and see how mediocre and boring it is. It's a lot worse than Galactic Prince's debut. I even go so far to say that Galatic Prince's debut is more entertaining than the hyped Valvrave. Maybe due to Valvrave has such a herbivore male MC and illogically owning mechas piloted by professionals. At least the MCs in Galactic Prince have the pilot background that makes "owning the enemies" scene feels more realistic.

Small but interesting quirk - the last show with "Ginga" in the title, Ginga e Kickoff, also had a character named Saionji Reika.

The second episode confirms the aliens are not invaders but hunters on a safari. When MJP/Team Rabbits and GDF pull themselves together and become a threat to them there can be two reactions hubris making them not believe it or they take it seriously that they escalate to extermination.

Humans to them are just animals.

On an interesting Team Rabbits are all test tube babies and they don't know it yet. The link they have with their mechs is reminiscent of Soukou no Strain's Reasoners and the organic processor, Mimic, which are their cloned brains.

I've just finished episode 1, and I have no idea what to make of it. It seems terrible, the animation on the humans are loony, the plot has all the cliches, the characters are as stereotyped as the colors of their units, and all the big name voices are all playing to type.

But because it exactly ticks all the boxes, its an excellent mecha anime!! What do?!

EDIT:

You know, I was expecting a Galactic Defense Force, not something as small as Global.

Where be the Mammoth Tanks?

EDIT2:

Finished episode 2. This feels like Super Sentai. XD

This week's episode was a little boring imo. Too much down time, and the jokes weren't as good as the previous two episodes. But now the story is getting interesting, and I really like the setting and characters. Next week should be very interesting, judging from the preview.

So not only are they genetically engineered but all prior memory before the academy was erased?

But not all their memory was deleted as Izuru has a vague familiarity with the girl who is behind MJP.

Izuru was not always an Otaku as he was a blank slate waiting to write himself. Hence the hero-gasms.

Kei likes to bake and eat cake. Whether it is a skill she had before or something she developed like Izuru we are not sure yet.

Kei as she stated has identity issues due to the mindwipe but Izuru isn't bothered by.

While Irie fails at getting a boyfriend Izuru can't read the mood and ruins his time alone with Kei with his waifu.

Three episodes in a 24 episode series a train wreck does not equal, wait until the half way point before claiming such thing.

The setting is turning out to be a bit darker than I expected. The kids have been genetically modified and their memories erased in order to turn them into perfect soldiers. Not sure it worked all that well. Pretty much all of them have, err, "issues". The most normal of the band seems to be Kei.

Doubt Tamaki is going to die next week. It's still too early for that.

Maybe that is why the doc wanted to do a recheck on him. Going by the website timeline, the kids joined the school at 12 years old. There are around 16 now.

All the kids have psychological issues to "fix" their identity lost. They developed obsession to gain meaning. That's why they are walking tropes.
Izuru => Become a Hero
Tamaki => boyfriend
Suruga => weapons (and older womans).
Asagi => Become The Best (most Badass).

Kei is the only one aware that they are only tools and who haven't tried to fill her identity with something (except maybe the super sweet cakes baking, but she seems to be doing it out of boredom and might be just clinging to the little memory she still have). The MJP/GDF should dread the day she find her self-drive, she sounded resentful there

As for next episode, it's evident that Izuru is going to go badass mode. It's the whole point of the instincts system, in the case of Izuru it make him x10 badass when it comes to save people...and everyone follow Izuru around because he have self-drive, while they don't.
