I both love and hate that how Reika and Rin-Rin are easily my favorite characters. Their interactions with each other work in both a serious and light-hearted matter, and they help develop both their characters and the plot quite well, despite the fact that they haven't had nearly as much screen time as the main cast.
Bottom-line: I hope the main cast improves a lot in character soon (specifically, actually being friends), and its hard for me not to ship Reika and Rin-Rin, heh. |

I want to thank Haak for indirectly getting me into this show.
I looked up this show on a Google image search, and the character designs really didn't appeal to me, so I had initially decided to give it a pass. But then I read Haak compare this show favorably to Valvrave on the Valvrave series thread, and I decided I'd try to get beyond my superficial issues with this show to see if I would enjoy it. And I have to say, I'm glad I did. What I like about this show is that it strikes me as the most grounded/realistic of the three mecha shows of this season. In other words, I don't see as many fantastical elements in this show as I do in Gargantia and Valvrave, so this show is relatively easy on my suspension of disbelief. Another edge that I think this show has on its two direct competitors is how it's the only one of the three to have mecha conflict that is consistently interesting and suspenseful for me. Gargantia and Valvrave both have protagonists that strike me as having absolutely overwhelming force over their opponents, which takes some of the interest and suspense out of it. But with Majestic Prince, the protagonists are slight underdogs, if anything, and so that makes the actual mecha conflict in this show more rewarding to me than what they are in Gargantia and Valvrave. That's not to say that Gargantia and Valvrave don't have their own edges of course - Given what I wrote before, it should come as no surprise that I prefer the character designs and overall look of those shows to what we have here. Still, I like how Majestic Prince takes a group of five kids, a motley crew in some regards, and lets us watch them grow through their difficult life situation and their combat challenges as they slowly mature. While neither of these kids leaves as strong an impression on me as what Ledo (Gargantia) or Haruto (Valvrave) does, I do find that this group is more than the sum of its parts. In other words, the internal dynamics between the five are fairly consistent, and has a certain authenticity that makes the story that much more rich and engaging. These internal dynamics are not always as amusing to me as I think they're intended to be, but that's almost beside the point - The key is that they build a certain chemistry and camaraderie between the five that feels very "true to life" and hence helps me care about them. The adult characters also come across to me as impressively diverse, with the most important of them being nicely multifaceted. They make for a strong supporting cast. On the whole, this is a very solid show so far.

Yeah this season we have diversity of three mecha shows.
Gargantia is like Sora no Woto with After the End and world building. Valvrave is brimming with Sunrise tropes. Things we've seen before. Majestic Prince is slow but steady character buildup and non-curbstomp mecha fights. Make you root for the rag tag of misfits as they learn teamwork. |

I'm not sure what was better: The fact this is so far the best action scene of the series or that the team was tricked into watching pornography. I admit, the latter was pretty funny, especially when they thought an actress resembled their instructor. I had a feeling fan service would be a main driving force for this series, but I never thought they'd take it THAT far.
They also made Tamaki more useful than just a shield, I am kind of impressed. Last edited by DuelGundam2099; 2013-05-02 at 12:13. |

I was so sure Rudy was going to kick the bucket. Well, he's not out of the woods yet. It shall happen sooner or later. The battle was really good this week. I enjoyed the action and the fact everybody on the team played an important role (except anxiety-kun). Seems like Izuru took Rudy's words at heart.
Surprisingly, Tamaki was confirmed to be the purest Majestic Prince. She mistook porn for wrestling lol. Suruga is also more innocent than expected.

I did wonder if Randy from Team Doberman was going to do a Roy Fokker, but was glad this didn't happen. Nice trick with the 'training video'...!
I think this is the second time they've been sent on a mission which should have no opposition, only to find it's crawling with the enemy. I smell a set-up. |

The comedy rarely ever hits the mark for me but when those two guys carried on watching the porno, I seriously loled. Tamaki not understanding what it was, was also pretty amusing.
To be honest I'm surprised at myself that I was being so generous to it in the Valvrave thread considering I feel like I can be so harsh on it in it's own thread. You've ended up enjoying this show more than me.

Considering the flags Izuru keeps raising in the last episode, eating her cakes and protecting her, I think she starting to have feelings for our hero wannabee.
But Izuru watching porn was a turn off for her. Oh Randy asking Rin out he was hoping to reenact the porn movie with Rin. |

I have this sinking suspicion that Izuru is going to snap very, very soon. His faces are getting all the more distorted and maniacal as he's put into worse and worse situations.
Kei is adorable when she's mad at Izuru. Pro Wrestling?

Pretty standard episode this week, but I liked the team work in the mission, and their seniors being True Bros is great because it fits with the character tone for the series. No need for over serious soldiers, leave that for the adult characters.

I really like this episode. The Fail Five got their much-deserved morale boost from Team Doberman. In that case, I’m also glad that Doberman are not a bunch of stereotypical cocky ace seniors (Yes, I’m looking at you, Freezing) which is very refreshing. And I’m also surprised that Izuru and Asagi nonchalantly keep watching the porn due to curiosity, ignoring the fact that Kei is well aware of what they’re doing XD. I guess they really are good friends . Suruga can’t take it and freaked out. Heh, I understand how he feels. Some people just can’t handle watching it the first time around .

Kei is the center, holding this show together. Otherwise this would have fell apart on the first episode.
I laughed when she gave Izuru the evil "eye" MAGNIFIED when he admitted watching the "thing". Also, good to see Kei's Asthram-unit has weapons and a powerful shield generators. |
