I got it, you guys seen OreImo episode 3? The one with Saori's backstory?

That's a Gap Moe right there.
Kuroneko/Ruri is also a good example. The first time she showed up in a casual outfit... WHOA.

Kirino also works. 95% bitch tsun 5% dere, as such there can be quite a surprising gap in her behavior.

No. It should be the opposite. A girl who is always in psycho mode suddenly starting to act all cute and meek.

Aren't you confusing it with "yangire"? A yandere by definition must have a "dere" side. Moreover there are some that refute the definition of "yandere" as necessarily psychopathic, since the "yan" part only means "ill" in the sense of mentally disturbed.

Maybe. What I'm saying is that a girl whose default mode is "cute/dere" but turns crazy from time to time like the Higurashi girls is not gap moe. You don't go "SO MOE!" when you see Rena going nuts with that psychopathic look on her face (well, I guess some do ). The cute/dere/moe side has to be the rare one for it to qualify as gap moe. Otherwise it's just regular yandere/yangire moe.

Hmmm yeah I think I got your point now. The problem with yandere is that they are different from the other "dere" archetypes as they first show their "dere" side and then they go "psycho".
It is therefore hard for a truly "yandere" to cause a "gap moe" effect.

Like you said you'd need someone who is normally psychopatic that suddenly acts gently and kind, but then she wouldn't really qualify as yandere, unless we stretch the common definition.

Did you just ignored what I've posted about appearance?

And you really never seen any Anime that has a girl suddenly changing her appearance with a new hairstyle, or glasses, or without glasses, and wearing a Kimono or Evening Dress etc. ?

Hmm, I guess I'm having trouble grasping it. Any good character will be dynamic and usually have much more to offer than it first glance. It's just being human. =p

At it's core, the 'gap moe' is just seeing a character in a different light than what you're used to/expected.

This could be something as simple as a tomboy suddenly dressing up in girly clothes, it's the drastic and unexpected change that produces the effect.

...Of course, it has to be a positive change.

So for example that scene of Railgun where

Spoiler for Railgun:

I suppose it can be considered a case of "moe gap" right?

I guess so...

But other than the "suddenly turn moe one day", i think we can also include the "opposite character stereotypes stay within one character".

For example, Marisa Kirisame. Tomboyish girl but always wearing long skirt, have a large hat (understandable), long hair with braid and ribbons.

But then that would become her 'norm', and the gap would be closed.

That doesn't mean you can't find her moe, it's just that it's not the gap moe.

How long do we wait for the behavior to settle in to call it her normal mode?

*shrugged*

I think it's pretty quick, but this is subjective from person to person.

I guess the gap moe still exist as tomboys can't always continuously carry out their antic on-screen?

Like normally she will just be a long hair with braids girl, before doing something tomboyish like jumping spin on the air, and then hand on her broom with one hand
