Syria: Israeli Strike a 'Declaration of War'

http://www.newser.com/story/167403/s...mpaign=rss_top
Quote:
Syria is firing back figuratively at Israel after airstrikes today struck targets in and around Damascus, calling the attack "a declaration of war. This is not something that is (new)," a deputy foreign minister reports CNN. "We dealt with this on several occasions, and the retaliation was always painful to Israel, and they will suffer again." A statement from the foreign ministry later blamed Israel for "the terrorist acts which Syria is witnessing," adds the BBC.

Israel itself isn't commenting, but it has shut down airspace along its northern border and deployed missile defenses to the region. The attack has drawn criticism from the Arab world, with Egypt saying Israel had "violated international law and principles," while the Arab League called on the UN Security Council to "act immediately" to stop it.

Assad could have held off the civil war indefinitely. But if he wants to attack Israel at the same time I would say he is toast. War on two fronts is never a good idea.

I would celebrate, but I see no reason to. After he falls, things won't get any better or worse for the region.

Syria just disconnected itself from the Internet a few hours ago. We know what that means; the ruling government is about to do something really bad. Expect casualties.

If someone was going to go in and intervene, I'd rather it be the odd mix of Jordan, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.

Israel and Turkey is enough : a powerful military and their indifferent ally.

Most of all, you have to be disciplined and you have to save, even if you hate our current financial system. Because if you don't save, then you're guaranteed to end up with nothing.

Jordan has already his hands full with the refugees, so I doubt than the would be much active beside giving right of passage to the other's countries' s troupes .

It was suck big time for the Christians and Awaities, but one is Assad's own tribe (so oh well), and Christians love getting prosecuted anyway.

Swapping the mass killing of one group of innocent civilians to mass killing of a different group of innocent civilians is a neutral state of affairs. Things are just as bad, but not getting any worse.

The Syrian Air Defense Force is an independent command within the Syrian Armed Forces. It has been merged into and then separated from both the Syrian Arab Army and the Syrian Arab Air Force. The Syrian Air Defense Force controls twenty-five air defense brigades, each with six SAM batteries. It is equipped with 650 static SA-2, SA-3 and SA-5 launchers, 200 mobile SA-6 and SA-11 launchers and over 4,000 anti-aircraft guns ranging from 23mm to 100mm in caliber. There are also two independent SA-8 and SA-10 SAM Regiments, each with four batteries of 48 mobile SAMs.

The Syrian early warning system comprises Long Track; P-12 Spoon Rest; P-14 Tall King; H-15 Flat Face; P-30 Big Mesh; P-35 Bar Lock; P-80; PRV-13; PRV-16 Thin Skin mobile and static radar sites throughout Syria.

In 1982,19 batteries of 20 tank batteries—each battery consisting of five tanks and each tank equipped with three SAM-6 missiles—were wiped out in a single Israeli airstrike. Despite decades of technological innovations in the Israeli and Western militaries, Syria still relies heavily on Soviet-era relics to defend itself. This is especially true in the north of the country. The government chose to concentrate its newer hardware in the west and south of Syria to guard against Israel, not that that has worked particularly well either: Israeli jets have penetrated Syrian airspace three times in the last few decades without incurring any damage to their planes. The 2007 sortie destroyed a nuclear reactor in Deir Ezzour.
Just a tidbit of what Syria could throw at an enemy. Although a lot of it is antique Soviet hardware, the thing there is Soviet hardware generally WORKS!

Given the increased network centric nature of aircraft, air wings are next to useless without a marker like a soldier, satellite or a wingman designating targets.

Israeli planes are able to hit the reactor by moving through blind spots, I don't think the Syrians have enough technology, let alone equipment, to create a proper overlapping air defence net along with FOPs.

True, with the ground units preoccupied with the attempted rebellion.
And with what's available as far as electronic warfare, that could jam a lot of their ground to air capabilities.

Syria-linked group blamed in Turkey blasts; 43 die
http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories...05-11-16-22-25
Quote:
"We have to a great extent completed our work toward identifying the assailants," he told reporters. "We have established that the organization and assailants have links to the pro-regime mukhabarat (intelligence) organization."

He did not name the group, but said the aim of the attack was to pit Turks against Syrian refugees in Reyhanli.

Russia says Iran must take part in proposed Syria talks
http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/...94F0UJ20130516
I don't think than it would help to find a solution but given their involvement in the situation, doing without them might be problematic.

Apparently the Israeli air strike pushed Syria and Russia towards completing the S-300 supply contract, which includes 6 SAMs and approximately 150 missiles. The range of the S-300, if installed in Syria, will pretty much give Syria control over Israeli and Cyprus airspace. Netanyahu fucked himself this time.

Do you honestly think the Israelis will allow them to be installed? One of their key military positions is having air superiority. They are not going to give that up.

Do you honestly believe Israel is suicidal enough to go on a confrontation with Russia? The first instalment of the transaction for the SAMs already took place, and since it's Putin and not Medvedev that's in charge now, bold actions are most likely to be taken.
