Laptop motherboard

If motherboard for a laptop becomes non-functional, is it worth replacing or are you better off buying a new laptop? I have two cases in which the people involved don't know a whole lot about computers and would more likely have to have someone else replace the motherboard for them (one of which lives overseas and can't find the part in his country). I know it would probably be cheaper to buy the part instead of a new laptop but all the work involved as well as having to pay someone else to replace it might not add up. What would be the best course of action in this situation?

Replacing the laptop is cheaper. Always. You can't even buy the replacement boards outright most of the time.
