What a way to end the first season! Despite all the bleakness in Episode 11, this episode seems to have returned to its over-the-top, campy style that accompanied episodes 1-6. There were moments that were great to watch, such as the Thunder punch, more Haruto and L-elf, Akira's entrance as a Valvrave pilot, Cain and L-elf's fight - and some that were rather ridiculous I almost laughed; VVV-tan's brother looks like Eureka 7 AO's Ao with a bad hairday. I was rather relieved when Saki rejected Haruto's proposal, though I didn't expect such a cool-mannered rebuttal.

Along the way, Valvrave had taken some unpredictable turns, and this is no exception - who would've expected that the Dorssian Fuhrer and the JIOR President were part of the Magius conspiracy? The scene at the beginning with a future Saki (or Saki lookalike) conversing with a child which closely resembles L-elf and the preview scenes are enough to fuel speculation for the time being.

Anyway, that was an effective cliffhanger to end at. I just hope that the second season will be able to address the questions/issues it raised, especially those pertaining to the Valvraves, and bring a good closure to the series. Now, time to wait.

However, he was still confident they could pull off a win until Cain hands him his ass and keeps defying his expectations.
My point is, that wasn't at all the mindset of L-Elf that was being conveyed. He spent a lot of the episode being very annoyed and having no plan for dealing with Cain. In fact, he didn't seem to care at all that Cain attacked. One of the first times he even mentions it is when Haruto suggests a way to deal with it. That's what I'm referring to. I didn't get the impression that his character even belonged in this episode beyond getting his ass kicked by Cain. Edit: To put it into better words, he pretty much just reacted to what was happening this episode.

It had nothing to do with his poker face even being too strong. There was just no internal monologue supporting what he should have been feeling right now. L-Elf's character in this episode is as follows: "You want to do what? Good idea!" "Oh no, Cain is stronger than me! So mean!"

Edit: By the way, why does the voice for V-tan sound so familiar? I feel like I've heard that "onii-chan!" before somewhere...

Well crap.

So it's L-Elf x Saki, and all of this is a flashback. Interesting.

But yeah that was an interesting end to this cour. ARUS and Dorassia was already controlled by a secret organization and JIOR probably was already planning to go against them or something.

I fail to see why people are arriving at that conclusion just because of a kid being shown 211 years later who looks like a descendant of L-Elf.

It's all speculation anyways. And that paring I'd prefer just because of the traits and such.

Anyways good cour run. Can't wait for the Fall season.

I think what happened was that in the beginning, L-elf knew about Cain invading the module, that's why he didn't react at all as it was happening.

However, as Cain kept throwing out curveballs that he couldn't predict, he began to show his frustration by beginning to show emotion, until it finally culminated during his fight with Cain. Every time he thought he had trapped his former commander, Cain outmaneuvers him. For every step that L-elf takes, Cain had already thought of it, and gone two steps ahead. Also, from the amount of vehemence that he shows towards Cain, I think that there's some personal history there between those two. Cain also seemed to enjoy taunting him, even as he totally ignored Haruto.

Forget, A-drei, Cain is L-elf's nemesis. He's the one L-elf must beat, even as the other is telling him he will never win.

I was reminded of something just now.

Was I the only one who just cracked up when they talked about the "genius plan" to defeat the Valvraves using heat? That just slayed me. I think that's the hardest I've laughed all year, and I really do mean that. I kind of hope that the "genius" comments were a TL being overly dramatic it. If not though... That's what they've been trying to do the whole series, and suddenly their low-tech plan to heat up the shields and put spikes on them is a rousing success over the use of those magnetic strips. That plan was far from genius, and far from being anything but lucky that they were foiled by their fodder enemies literally hugging them into submission. I just, I lost it. I completely lost all composure.

Edit: Also, the long period of Akira making noises at her computer was too much for me to handle as well. Also the drill-

Actually, everything about the drill was just hilarious. Not just the idea itself, but the general handling of the actual drill. One of my favorite parts was when the drill is drilling through nothing, and there's a whole host of students standing there watching it rise up in the empty space surrounded by a convenient staircase.

Yeah, so I went back and checked the episode it seems while L-Elf expected the module to be invaded it was the poison gas (violating the treaty) and I guess Cain appearing in person that surprised him. After that it was just him getting his ass kicked and escaping into the Valvrave. Not surprised all we really got to see was him reacting with the episode shifting between three major events.

That reminded me of L-Elf's episode 3 escape but instead of bombs going off downward it's poison rising upwards. I found this coincidence just as funny as the students deer in the headlights reactions. And Brock telling everyone to run while the gas is closing upon him. Brilliant.

Here are some interesting coincidences.

Prior to the True Calendar and Year of the Third Galactic Empire there have been Two space wars. That was 71 years before.

Now we learn there are two generations of Magius prior to Haruto. Haruto and his band are third generation who are immortals.

My guess the first generation are VVV-tan and her brother, second generation the Magius conspiracy.

L-Elf thought the Fuhrer faction is the enemy but the true face of the enemy are the Magius that controls the world.

My guess the prime minister and Dr. Tokishima planted the seeds of revolution with Sakimori Academy and the Valvrave project.

Haruto and the gang would build the Third Galactic Empire upon the ashes of their predecessors.

Essentially Haruto will hijack L-Elf's revolution.

It was the president of ARUS.

JIOR was invaded as it seems likely some betrayed the Magius cause.

Given L-Elf's characterization to date, it is a bit strange that neither he nor any of his allies are expressing much shock over L-Elf being taken by surprise by Cain.

Up until this episode, many sincerely thought that L-Elf could predict virtually anything and everything his opponents would do. It was at the point where people referred to his abilities as "Psychic Powers". And viewers can't be faulted here as the anime really did go out of its way to portray L-Elf as this insanely brilliant strategic genius/super-soldier that could predict his enemy's every move and slaughter vast numbers of soldiers single-handedly.

And yet here in this episode L-Elf is outmaneuvered by Cain at virtually every turn, and nobody (including L-Elf himself) expresses much surprise over it. The guy with a virtually perfect prediction record through 11 episodes is now getting clobbered - That's as big a story as anything else in this episode is, and yet I didn't get the sense it received the sort of attention one would expect it too.

Oh well, I guess the anime writers figured that Cain's snappy comeback line in Episode 11 was enough, and that this episode would simply prove Cain completely right in that snappy comeback line.

So, can all enemy magius float, generate forcefields and force broken mechs to operate?

if so than Haruto and his gang are in for a hard battle

In fact, I'm not sure how they are going to avoid being captured. 3 allied machines paralyzed and ready to be destroyed outside. Cain in his cheat machine inside.

I guess Mahou Shoujo Akira is their only hope

Eh, I figured the sound ass whipping L-Elf got and the very real fear he seemed to show at Cain's ability were pretty big things. And with death pretty imminent and everyone scrambling trying to figure out what to do it makes sense they aren't going to focus on "OMG, I can't believe L-Elf didn't predict this!" I think if they'd shown L-Elf being anymore shocked it would've been overblown. And I say this as someone who's wanted to see L-Elf outwitted for a while now.

Besides, the party's not over yet!

I will rate the first season as 9/10, there's some unaswered questions and some secondary characters aren't well-fleshed nor developed enough, but I greatly enjoyed the unpredictably exciting nature of the anime, the battles are awesome to watch, and Shoko is pretty much one of the reasons why I give the show a definite chance and I watched it to the end, she's my favorite heroine and also one of the best girls of the season. Saki also steals half of the spotlight in the second half, and she's an okay character, I find it hilarious that Sunrise likes to emphasize her character so much!
