Uh oh. How well do you think they could regulate the online manga 'market', for want of a better word?

Don't worry, these are scare articles-- this is not the first time the Japanese police have tried to scare people into halting piracy. Winny and Share are still perfectly safe, and the most prominent scan groups on Winny and Share will probably not be deferred by some random website being shut down. (Keeping in mind that websites are totally public and easy to track down, and Japan P2P cannot be tracked down.)

Also the guy was about to start a pay membership service. As long as most site stay free they should fly under the radar.

I would wager to guess that the vast majority of people who look at pirate manga do so via fan translations outside of Japan, so I can hardly see their profits being hindered in any significant way.

That does not make it right, but it is a point of consideration.

Plus, exposing the mangaka's work to a foreign audience guarantees a fanbase for offical translations, giving them more money. So it's in their best interests to let people do scanlations <_< >_>

1) I kind of doubt that
2) It's their decision, anyway.

I wasn't entirely serious, but it is a reason to let it continue.

Not really

because the official translations, specially of some good mangas, can be quite shit in english.

I've been losing interest in anime and manga recently so trifling matters like these are of very little importance to now. But I find that they are finally getting smart to regulate such matters.

Yes, but it's still money in pockets, and publicity. I mean, without scans, I'd never have heard of most of the manga I now read, at least not before it's 'officially translated' *shudder*, and I wouldn't have spent cash on them either. Not at NF, though. Never there. Never.

Yes, but my point was, people who read the pirate fan translated stuff is more likely to avoid the official releases because they don't translate as good.

I've read scanlations and I order the manga's afterwards : the Japanese versions however ...

I don't really like the official French translation (they tend to even names of techniques (magic, jutsu, whatever)

And the english ones ... some of these scanlations look more natural than the ones I saw in the store.
