This ep seems to have started an increase in fanart featuring Rin's roommate Aaichirou Nitori.

Dammit, things were finally getting better with Haruka focusing on more important things than angsty shark boy. Shark boy just had to angst his way into the relay. Only a matter of time before they have a scene of him angsting hard in the shower.

Cool! The relay was just awesome!
I was on the edge of my seat the whole time!
Seems like Haru found his much needed motivation.
Looks like Rin got exactly what he needed to think twice about his decision.
Gou is a pretty good manager ^^
So they put in a summer festival into this episode... guess that's to be expected.
Although, this anime is half about swimming and half about their personal dramas.
They sure are keeping it nicely balanced ^^

Too bad for Rin that Haru has found his own happiness already!

When did he act like an asshole? If you're talking about him entering the relay, I think he has good reasons. He did it so he could swim with them again. He regretted what he said to Haru.

Which is kind of assholish to whoever he displaced, right there.

Good episode in regard of comedy Detective Rei FTW.
In regards of development ehh not really.
Mackerel-kuns interaction with the others where almost non existing and I thought that after the relay he would open up a little but oh well.
Shark teeth is still not over his friends and like I said it shouldve been better if he just move on and becoming a better motivation drive for the guys.
Also Fanboy #1 should stop stalking him like this I never liked that type of person wether male or female cuz they are often so freaking weak minded that it hurts.

That's how life works. If Rin got the spot then it simply means he was better than that guy (unless the captain is playing favorites, but that would dumb).

The whole scenario with Nagisa and Rei trying to prevent an encounter between Rin and Haru was amusing. Nagisa winking hints at Makoto was especially funny.

So Rin is beginning to have a taste of his own bad medicine. I feel a bit sorry for him but I also feel that he's paying for his own foolishness. Now that he realizes what he truly lost, it's already gone; Haru and the others have found and strengthened their new group and friendship that he stupidly scorned.

Haru giving Makoto those 4 goldfish at the end was a nice touch.

Funny but I can't help finding an emotional and dramatic Haru to be a bit disturbing. LOL. I guess I'm just so used to his normal deadpan, frozen mackerel attitude.

So now they're aiming for the nationals too? How many episodes for this series? Like 12? We're now at 9...are we going to get to see them in the nationals? They'd have to beat Rin's team though.

The finale of the relay race was fantastic. Truly a perfect job with that part, including how it ended with the OP beginning to roll. You could just feel the rush and exhilaration of come from behind victory as Haru valiantly overtook all of his competitors to inch out a 1st place finish for his team. I actually had goosebumps during this scene before the OP, that's how emotionally resonant and well-executed it was.

The sentimentality of the characters was handled very well overall. Haru is a generally quiet and introverted person who has to truly dwell on and figure out his feelings before he can put them into words. But once he puts them into words its clear as day and pretty cathartic.

Rin's sense of loss was quite palpable in this episode. While he is admittedly kind of self-centered, its also good to see him sort of reclaim his humanity. He's tired of being an island unto himself, and wants to feel like part of a team. It's not nice that his actions will force somebody off his school's relay team, but I do understand why he's doing what he's doing, and it was handled well, leading into a good cliffhanger ending.

Finally, Nagisa and Rei continue to bring excellent comedy. I loved the part of Rei secretly tracking Rin. That was hilarious!

The episode was a bit slow in parts, but these elements I mentioned above more than made up for it.

On the whole, another very strong episode of Free! This show has really stepped up its game with this episode and the two before it.

i'm actually really interested in his split for the relay. i doubt they'll go that much into it, but he at the very least, probably improved his time from his individual race, which would mean he was faster than rin.

Given Tokyo's recent successful bid for the 2020 Olympics, I wonder if Kyoani could fit in a timeskip OVA for the Free! guys at the Olympics 7 years from now...
Otherwise I suppose Rio will have to do.

Good thing Masahiro Yokotani wrote the last three episodes. There was something about the character interactions in the two episodes Reiko Yoshida wrote (6 and 9) that rang false to me, as if she doesn't know how friendship between guys works. I also felt both episodes shipped Haruka/Makoto with next-to-zero subtlety.
