Watched a video on youtube, and got my interest up again. I possibly can play the Japanese version fine. But my experience on DMT and Million Arthur is: a game will be much less enjoyable if I can't fully understand it. The difference of understanding even 90% of everything, and 100% of everything when playing a game is simply much bigger than I thought
Even if they do "localize" it, I doubt they'll use the same models considering the context (wasn't the game supposed to originally cater towards the Japanese military otaku crowd?). Maybe they'll find an American partner that would instead moeify the American fleet . It's popular enough "in Japan" to consider I think, although admittedly, the American market could differ?

Well, since you brought it up... I wonder what such a rendering of the Zumwalt-class DD would be like...

With the closing down of Sword Girls Online, I doubt there will any other publisher willing to invest in moe card games.

Shimada Fumikane by the way (of Strike Witches, Girls und Panzer, and Sky Girls fame) has done several original designs for Russian ships as well, which I prefer to some of the other original designs that came up in Pixiv, which like the one done for the SS Albacore, are all OVER-designed, sometimes ridiculously so.

Ah, that bit of the diagram that includes American fans of military history and moe. (Am I trying to phrase this as "Find a way to get everyone who liked Girls und Panzer into this?")

Endless: Girls und Panzer... Not really. Now say Strike Witches, and we might be going somewhere, as the asthetic of Kantai has always been Mecha Musume.

True about the art style.

When I compare GuP to Kancolle to SW, while stylistically Kancolle and SW are similar due to the mecha musume aspect, my interest in Kancolle comes more from the historical references aspect of it, which is one of the reasons I really liked GuP. SW had plenty of references of its own, it's just that the series and the fanart didn't usually rely on direct historical references (alternate universe and all) as much as it did the fanservice.

Or, for GuP, it was that I visited for the history and stayed for the girls, for SW I went looking for the history and got mugged by the girls, for Kancolle I'm getting baited by the girls but found a really interesting bit of furniture in the parlor.

Of course, historical details in Kancolle are often abstracted, but it seems that the fan(art)s like to include them.

One Fumikane, for those who have not seen:

Endless: The historical in-jokes are actually more about the lines spoken by the girls in-game rather than their designs. See Abukuma being afraid of Kitakami bullying her (the two ships collided, resulting in Abukuma losing her bow), or Kongou speaking in English (because she was constructed in a UK shipyard and designed by an Englishman).

I've found Fumikane's choice of Russian ships for KanColle fanart interesting, as I think USSR ships had MALE names instead of the name of places that the USN and IJN ships had in WW2.

Or, in the case of USN subs, fish.

Russian ship naming conventions.

The whole thing with ship "girls" gets even more linguistically- and culturally-jumbled when it hits the English tradition of referring to a ship as "she" even if it is named after a man and the Russian language pronoun trouble that has ships be referred to with the male pronoun. Though the Soviet Navy didn't have (anything?) named after a woman anyway.

The most interesting designs of Kancolle, in my opinion, would be those carriers. They also spawns a whole bunch of funny doujin/fanart because of that. Their history, though, are not fun to read. I can't believe there is a day that I feel depress by reading how Akagi going down on wiki.

Please, read the accounts of the Battle of Surigao Straight, where Fusou was torn in half, while Yamashiro sank suddenly after five minutes, and Mogami had her bow torn off. It's easy to read if you think of them as ships (and as a Filipino, ENEMY ships at that), but super-imposing the KanColle designs on the entries to these battles make it weird, to say the least.

Pretty much perfectly-laid trap by the US forces, that one.

On the flip side, there's the Battle off Samar. Given how destroyers are usually portrayed as either kids (the Akatsuki class) or early teens (the Kagerou class) in KanColle, imagine a bunch of kids driving off the grown women of Center Force, which among other things included the Yamato, Kongou, Chikuma, Tone, Kumano, and Haruna...

If I recall in the comics, the poor ships usually suffer panic attacks when their historical demise is referenced, from Akagi's "Midway. Pride-induced. Explosion" PTSD to the Submarine Trauma Group, and Mutsu's third turret.

On the American side, we got our own fair share of submarine trauma victims too. And speaking of the Battle off Samar, don't forget the destroyer escorts, ships that are even smaller than destroyers, charged straight into the fray as well.

Adding the historical context onto the moe girls can be a little morbid, but naval warfare is a messy thing.

(Given that most of the Kancolle ships thus far are Japanese, most of them had a messy end. Going over the Strike Witches cast, more of their historical counterparts survived, but there is at least one example of a character's real person possibly being killed in WWII by another character's. This would also get interesting if other nations end up in KanColle...)

LOL I cleared 2-4 with the dual sub technique. It was funny. ^^;

Now to just grind my ships, but hey, at least I don't have to worry about 2-4 anymore!

The ships' downfall have much more impact mostly because each of them are treated as individual, I think. You have a type of tank and airplane, but each ship has their own name.

So, after trying a run through 3-1, I can see why some people call 2-4 a "tutorial" stage, as it's really a dipstick for minimum levels. Because frankly, anything below 25 isn't cutting it. ^^;

Yeah, time to grind everyone to 30 now...

EDIT: Oh I noticed that I have the "must be this fleet composition and defeat this map" quests available now. Nishimura fleet for 2-3, and 4th Cruiser division for 2-2? Uhm, yeah, need levels then...

That's why cutting corners by using submarines for 2-4 isn't a good idea.
You are missing a certain amount of exp and all by bypassing it. Usually, beating 2-4 "normally" will make 3-1 and the rest look like a joke, except 3-4 for obvious reasons.

Leveling Chiyoda to LV12 just to rip off her midget submarines for KTKM.
Am I a terrible man if I feed the poor girl to KTKM as well since she has served her purpose?

Well if you're not collecting, then by all means. Ship slots are limited after all.

I'm collecting, so I only use doubles for modernization.

P.S. I at one point had 4 pairs of Chitose and Chiyoda. Leveled them all up to 12, took the subs, then kept 1 Chiyoda and Chitose as seaplane tenders.

Yes you are. I'm leveling Chitose right now so she can catch up to her sister.
