Miuna's such a sweet kid. I really like this series' depiction of familial bonds, it comes off as heartwarming and sincere. Hikari's growth into his role as Miuna's 'big brother' figure was really nice to watch too - hard to believe that he was the bratty kid from episode 1.

Ep 9

Well, a lot happened in this ep again - where to even start?

I guess I came away from the ep feeling really sorry for Hikari; he is really going through it right now, and on so many levels.

We finally get a hint as to what the nature of the coming catastrophe will be, though I must admit it is hard for me to see right now how the precautions taken by the people of the sea will help them. Maybe more of that in the next ep? (At least if the preview for next week's ep is any indication...)

For some reason I am still suspicious of Uroko-sama and the sea god, even though the manner in which the former tried to stop Akari and Hikari from leaving makes a little more "sense", in a weird sort of way.

It's difficult for me to see where things will be going from now on - I guess this ep was that much of a plot twist for me. But I am still looking forward to it! ^^

The calamity that is to come. I was thinking that it was originally going to be a flood that wipes out the surface, but by the preview an ice age? The preview said something about humans not being able to bear the cold that is to come or something along those lines.

That would make sense as both sides (Land and Sea People) would be punished.

Episode 9

So I guess the reason Tsumugu had city business last episode was due to his parents who he seems to have complicated relations with. That was rather subtly played but I still feel mixed about his character. At this point I'm now 100% sure he's supposed to be an enigma but it's hard to understand why. Well I'm just glad the show isn't completely ignoring him.

And that ending left me mixed as well. I was ready to admit that Hikari and Manaka might have some chemistry but then Manaka just totally burst his bubble out of nowhere. What was that about? Why did she react so strongly? Is it possibly related to the whatever is going on in the sea? I didn't think it was because she told Hikari she didn't know what was going on either: just that they had been told not to go to the surface. Was she actually rejecting his romantic interest? I didn't think it was that either since I was so sure Manaka was going Hikari's direction. Was she just afraid of what it might mean to Chisaki? That seems the most likely option, but to be honest I'm not exactly a big fan of drama based on misunderstandings. I can't say it's bad just yet since it has only just happened, but I can't be confident it won't be played the way I fear it will.

Meanwhile, doomsday is upon them all. I was kinda annoyed that the episode was tiptoeing around and teasing us with the answers but it looks like they plan to lay it out thick next episode. Can't wait.

Prolly right about Tsumugu ... makes sense in retrospect.

As for Manaka's reaction I was not so sure either, but chalked it up to being confronted with the ramifications of something she had not really considered regarding herself and Hikari ... Chisaki could have been part of the mix in her delayed reactions, but I kinda thought it was "too much at once" and she didn't have a "shelf" to put what happened in, so she just pushed him away.

I neglected to point out that this is now the second time Tsumugu has had something to say to Chisaki and this time Tsumugu was even more forward about his opinions, so I can't consider it a coincidence. I wonder what his motives are: Is it just natural concern for the well being of a friend who trusted him with her most secret feelings? Is he trying to push Chisaki onto Hikari because he actually likes Manaka after all? Or is he just finally fed up with being everyone's sea slug?

Or maybe Tsumugu actually has feelings for Chisaki. [/crackmoment]

You know, as the scene was unfolding I also began to wonder whether Tsumugu may have feelings for Chisaki...

As if things couldn't get any more complicated, eh? -_-

Am I the only one who sees Tsumugu x Chisaki ship?

Here a few screenshot that could be misunderstood if you don't see the full episode.

Sorry; dynamic content not loaded. Reload?

Anyway, I've some speculation regarding how they going to stop this coming catastrophe. It's based on the ED where they just show up Manaka and the saltflake. But, I'll save it after we see some more proof.

It's a neat ship I hadn't thought of, but I really do always think of Tsumugu as a protective guy. You could basically ship him with any girl he's nice to, so that sort of diminishes the effect a little.

Why would any guy want to get in the middle of that drama? He'd be the "also ran" in the relationship to Hikari's first place. He also knows about Kaname liking her too.
Tsugumi is just a nice guy concerned about a friend. Besides if he can deflect Hikari with Chisaki, then he has Manaka all too himself. She's practically a member of the family since granddad gave her someone special's apron to use. I don't think he's thinking like that though.

We finally got to see what the accessories in Manaka's hair are. They're actually on her ears.

Does that kind of thing exist in real life? I don't know anything about fashion.

I'm pretty sure she pushed him away because of Chisaki. She's usually pretty dense about these things but I believe she realized Hikari's hug was romantic in nature, so she rejected him as soon as the initial shock disappeared. Furthermore, I don't think she has any romantic interest in Hikari at the moment. She only sees him as a friend. A very close friend, but a friend nevertheless. It makes sense for her to reject him.

I feel bad for Hikari. He's been trying his hardest to give up on Manaka, but he couldn't. And when he finally gave in, this is what he gets. In an ideal world, it would make it easier for him to move on but I doubt it will be that easy.

I think there's hints that maybe Tsumugu might have a thing for Chisaki.

Tsugumu's usually infallible, but he almost tossed an ornament in the fire while he was deep in thought.

Chisaki showing her emotions was another thing I noticed. He cuts through her mature facade which makes her irritated.

She's annoyed by him and that will haunt her.

I have a feeling he's been watching Chisaki since there's no way he would be able to catch her that fast. lol

Most of all, look at this shot.

There's a lot that you could say about this scene.

It's definitely pretty, but I think there's more to it than that.

This reminds me a lot of Manaka's first meeting with Tsugumu, but this is a much better contrast of sea and land.

They're having a conversation about change, expressing yourself, and sea slugs while on the surface.

The lights and darks as well as the space between them could resemble the way sea people and land people feel at the moment.

So close, but yet so far.

i like this serie more and more each episode.
now the action of uroko are beiing more meaningfull, but i still wonder why hikari is special enough to cause all of this.

didn't realy expect an ice-age sort of catastrophe but i like it. I think the people in shioshishio will try to cuddle baside their sacred fire and wait for the warth of the sea god to calm down while leting the people on the surface freeze to death. and hikari and friends will do something about this.

Guys, you are over reading the little time between Tsumugu and Manako, seriously...

well this episode well..

Tsumugu wants a sea harem and is rising flags with all the girls a womanizer and he starts his own pat of nice&dense harem male mc who just keep rising flags with almost every girl without really give an real attention to any one(he estart to remember me another mc called "kodaka" from boku wa tomodachi" with the same "be nice guy vib").

kanami(poor almost forgetful guy for the peoples, looks like the little screen he get is not enough to make peoples talk about him) still have his feelings for chisaki but he likes hikari is turning in a "dolicon"(the blondie little girl) maybe he can make a ?"dolicon harem"

hikari and manaka flags still there, she really can't live without him, poor hikari.

man more i learn from tsumugu more i hate him, his character is so whatever, with a knowledge of ancient but with a horrible way to true deal with things and express himself(still being the same emotionless/blankly face, what this guy really want???? he is just there to be the "cool guy"???.

the sea peoples must not be afraid for tsumugu at this moment he can be the reason of then goes to extinction if him keep rising flag with every girl, i believe who he will be the true "calamity who the sea god is afraid.

Another excellent episode of Nagi no Asukara. Character interactions continue to be very rich and layered in this show, and Okada has certainly brought her A Game writing-wise here.

It's kind of funny how the incoming calamity in this show makes me think of two other anime shows airing right now...

Spoiler for Galilei Donna and Arpeggio of Blue Steel comparisons, some spoilers:

In any event, I suspect that the often-speculated time-skip will soon be upon us. There will be an ice age, and then we'll skip ahead to a later point where the land-people and sea-people are finally able to meet again. That's my speculation, anyway.
