Just wondering if someone who read volume 5 could post what happened. I'd really like to know instead of waiting for a movie.

Basically more of the same of the 4 older novels. The whole novel is a marathon with the writer going back and forth between the marathon and flashback of what happened earlier.

Is Oreki actually running the marathon?

Novels vs. anime

This is in reply to:

From what I've read of the translations novels, one of the things I prefer is that "Lady Chitanda" shows up earlier in the novels, or, at least, she's more easily seen. Oreki talks about Chitanda's graceful manners and good breeding when he first meets her in the novels, while this is harder to pick up in the anime. While I think it's unfair to criticize the anime for putting all of Chitanda's character development at the back end, I certainly was surprised when I saw "Lady Chitanda" make her appearance at the temple in ep. 20. When I rewatched the episodes, I spotted various flags, but I think it's true that the novel Chitanda is a bit more consistently developed as a character, although the hints *are* there, and I can't really blame the anime writers for letting myself be perhaps overly distracted by Chitanda's curious moe.

This may be related to the challenges of translation, but there a few places where the novels make a bit more sense--for example, when Chitanda discovers the truth about her uncle. However, the anime scene is far more emotionally poignant, because of both the visuals and some edits to the dialogue that hint more strongly at feelings between Oreki and Chitanda. There's also the grayness of Oreki's perspective that helps give us a better sense of his personality and world-view; while the anime shows us how Oreki actually acts, the novel gives the reader a stronger sense of how he perceives the world, and how his grayness isn't just a strange adolescent quirk, but something that's part of his personality--which makes Chitanda's effect on him all the more striking.

But seriously, though, for the most part I prefer the anime, although I haven't had time to read all of the available translations of the novels.

Eh, I think it's easy to pick up on Eru's prim and proper manners. It shows up in her speech, which comes off as very formal compared to Houtarou's.

Even a non-Japanese speaker can pick up on that, but everything else Chitanda does early in the series with regards to Oreki is anything but prim and proper--the constant invasions of personal space, grabbing him by the hand, etc. And even with the other members of the club, she comes of as an overgrown child in many ways, if a viewer misses hints here and there.

I was always under the (maybe ignorant) idea that Hyouka was kinda like a side story from the author, he supposedly has 2 other series besides the kotenbu one and I can't tell if they are over as of know. He is still active & recently released a novel titled Recursi·ble which seems to be a stand alone story.

As for Hyouka, currently there are no new LN nor new drama CD plans on sight.

Made an account just to reply to this.. whoa, where'd you see this? It says that an anime adaptation is upcoming/successive, and considering the fact that it's on the August 2013 issue of Shounen Ace, I think that's equivalent to a confirmation for a third season of Hyouka. Alternatively, it could be saying that the manga itself is a continuation from directly after where the anime left off, due to a little ambiguity in the language itself. Someone better at Japanese than me maybe want to chime in on how to translate, "アニメ化、続々です”? Or maybe clarify how far the Hyouka manga had gone story wise in relation to the anime by August 2013.

Though actually, the more I think about it, the less likely I think that it's confirming a third season of the anime. If it were, I think they would have used a different adjective than 続々. More likely, it just means that the Hyouka manga in that edition of Shounen Ace is picking up right where the anime adaptation left off.

So it's not necessarily a second anime season?

I think he is confusing the 2nd cour of Hyouka as season 2. Hyouka was a 2-cour series. There has been no word (AFAIK) of a 2nd season. And I don't if the light novels are still on going or finished.

So, no 2nd season for hyouka... it would be rare, since apparently there's only one volume left to be adapted and no word of the author if there will be more coming out
