I never really got the analogy between archers and carriers.

I guess it's because of their long range.

You have obviously never touched Touhou official Manga and Novel. For the Touhou series, the game introduce charactesr, the manga/novel expand on them, if you just read even one of the official novel or manga you'll see that most character is given very interesting characterization and some have a great backstory.

That's why I'm really loves Touhou, I'm into the series for the character, setting and music.

I still have not read a satisfactory answer for Seitsuki question "If you take out Kancolle's moe appeal, how much is left?"

If you were to remove the music and gameplay, pretty much the same thing than Touhou, to a different degree. Although I would argue the moe element isn't just the looks, but also the quirks and voice, which are quite effective.

The game doesn't just show "moe versions" of the warships, but also play straight to the history lore, with their own twist at that. On that regard, I'm pretty sure military otaku have their field day with it, considering the jabs and all about the girls with their real life counterpart.

Similarly to touhou, the franchise explore the characters as a whole with other medium, and the fanbase quite creative at times (which lead to meme, ultimately turning into "canon", like Akagi's gluttony).

That said, Kancolle is a completely different beast, in the sense that the original game is focalized on... collection so to speak, which is arguably not what you do in Touhou.
So ultimately, the appeal and characters presentation are vastly different.

That's why I don't get the point of comparing both games in term of "competition", while they basically are aimed to their own crowd and niche.
In fact, the "popularity war" going on makes me wonder if people have nothing better to do than harping "touhou old and busted" and "lol kancolle is just a short lived fad!".

As a non-player, the most fun I got out from enjoying the series is mostly focused on derivative works of various levels... as well as reading up on the actual vessels' history. The way their characters are built also intrigues me, although some do strike more ridicule than intrigue (small example: Yamato's voice).

Its also interesting that the way fans interpret a lot of aspects about the game, especially those related to the shipgirls' characterizations, and to a lesser extent their universe - each has their own appeal. Sometimes I imagine myself listening to an 'admiral' telling about their daily shenanigans with their ship girls when looking at fan strips, it's quite interesting that way. At least for me.

^ Fun fact: I also thought Taketatsu was a glaring mismatch when I saw Yamato's original art the first time, but when you consider her backstory and her quotes in the game, it actually more fitting than expected.

Not exactly perfect, but it does fit Yamato's earnest personality, spiced with some pouty attitude due to the hotel stuff.
In fact, the voice work much better for her other official artworks by Yoshinori. The original artwork looks a bit too mature (21-25ish), whereas she looks more like 18-21 with the subsequent arts.

Why should be mature character design problem? Lack of moe?

It's because the VA for Yamato is Ayana Taketatsu, aka Kirino and Nakano Azusa, that's why.

Late to the party, but Hanada as Series composer? There goes my hope of seeing great Abyssal Fleet moments in this series then.

Shouldn't get my hope up too high with fanworks

That and imagine hearing that kind of voice on a character you presume to be quite a mature young lady. Naturally you'd expect a much more grown-up voice. When I think back of Yamato's original art and her character voice, it still throws me off by a great deal. I should probably look more into more official artwork of her however. What I do admit though, is I like her figure and hair style (PONYTAILS!).

I should probably listen more to her quotes... though I still have trouble making out how I should perceive her character and the description "Yamato Nadeshiko" is just not cutting it for me. To me even lesser ships like some of the destroyers have, like, more to their character that I can perceive. Maybe it's just me I guess.

Also it's not just Yamato, a lot of the other vessels have voices that make you wonder tons.

I'm frequently disappointed by the voices selected for characters from manga and games.

I know it was obvious they'd make it in, but it's still great to see Kaga and Akagi. Now to see if the latter is obssesed with bauxite

Wait, were their bows always that big? Seriously, those things are huge.

Keep in mind that seiyuu can still have multiple voices. Chiwa Saito used to be just loli voice before Senjougahara.

Then again, I hope Abyssal won't look this style.

Actually, Yamato is nowhere close to the Yamato Nadeshiko tropes, which is the reason why the first impression with the art style isn't exactly working.
The only characters fitting such image are Shoukaku and Haruna, and to some extent, Houshou.

is true to the art thought. Fubuki, Kaga, and akagi is generic looking compare to other more "interesting" cast

Why does Kaga look so serious.

Well, I guess the "Yamato Nadeshiko" association with Yamato doesn't really work for me to begin with. I'd say Houshou fits that best of all. Oh and Shoukaku and Haruna too, but I guess I'm more used to seeing Houshou depicted as a housewife.

My current impression of Yamato right now is... "What are you, a (magazine) model or something?" I guess I need not say where and why I got that impression...
