Even if Sunrise doesn't make a second season, Gunpla is still a great resource. So maybe in the next decade, we would get a whole new, different Gunpla anime.

The funny part of it all is that the best Gundam series, isn't even a "true" Gundam series.

Ok I just finished watching this and I have to say I didn't like it very much. I guess I'm not big into gunplay and I'm probably overdosed on gundam fanservice from all the SRW and GGen games, but it's got the "we have no story whatsoever so let's have a tournament" thing, no dramatic tension at all. It doesn't stand on its own without extensive gundam knowledge/geekiness (take your pick) from the viewer, and it's hard to get excited about a bunch of kids competing with toys.

You never watch the next ep to find out what happens next, more what custom/obscure variant they're going to show case. It's glorious advertising/mech porn, except it's not even glorified like with 00 :P (which I also didn't like starting from S2). The animation isn't as good imo and there's no over the top awesomesauce like in SRWs. :P I also didn't like the lack of large battle except in the last ep and how it turned into G gundam at the end.

It's funny because I like Saki, but Saki has the overpowered main character that pulls out moments of pure awesome. I've been watching Majestic Prince and SEED/Destiny remasters too, I guess 16 yrs olds with a mix of mature and juvenile are much easier to swallow than paper thin characters running on shounen power fumes. :P Flawed as it is Destiny was more entertaining to me for the "Kira stomps main casts like grunts" moments if nothing else.

Honestly I can understand how it'd appeal to some people, it's not horrible by any means and certainly better than AGE, and a light hearted romp break, but calling it the best Gundam show ever is pushing it I think.

I think it's because the show is supposed to resonate with fans. That's why general gundam geekiness is a required thing. Seeing how they refer to Gundam franchise as a show within the show is in itself interesting because it feels like they're referring to all the people who enjoy gundam in the world.

Then again watching gundam fans battle it out isn't too special when you just go to forums and see them tearing at each other

Hahaha how true, I remember the forums in when Destiny was airing, jeebus. I'm a gundam fan but like I said I've played about 10 GGen games so I'm kinda blasé with the billion custom builds, I guess I'd have liked it more otherwise.

Eh no. There wasn't a single episode I waited for on Monday evening just for the new Gundam variant or new character cameo I would see. I waited for each episode to see what happens next. A lot of battles ended with the same super move, but the journey into each battle was unique, and there were no annoying main characters.

The story WAS Sei's journey into greatness in a sport he truly loved but couldn't excel at. It was great exactly because it was so simple: A steady climb to the top, a crisis/climax, then resolution, as how all stories should be. No contrived and complicated plots and what-if philosophical questions like most recent Anime (especially Gundam), and where kids can be good at a game they play just for the enjoyment of it.

When we watch something, we want to be entertained, and this show delivered that and more.

I agree with this. Mind you that I’m a fan of GBF, and moreover, a BIG fan of Gundams & Gunpla. Hell, I’m the one who created this GBF general thread to begin with (with the help of Monir the moderator) so I have no hate for this series. But I can see where those who don’t 100% enjoy GBF comes from. It’s your typical “toy-based anime” that features Gundams (or Gunpla, in this case). And outside of some quirks and certain cuteness, I would say GBF’s characters aren’t that special if we look at it from both “Mecha anime”-genre and “toy-based anime”-genre (let alone anime in general). So, in this case, I agree with itisjustme that this is certainly not the best Gundam series (at least for me).

Best Gundam show I've watched? Well, it'd have a steep uphill battle with nostalgia for that title. But an awesome ride that I looked forward to, woke up early every Monday morning for (I like to sleep in late usually)? Definitely, fuck yes.

Also, that ending, while cliche and seen a mile coming, was easily one of the most well-done endings when it comes to Gundam in the new millennium. Only 00 S2 come close to that level of closure and even that was somewhat ruined by the Movie ending.

The best part of the series was Aila. Story wise, I really wanted to see her hapy ending. In othercases, I just wanted to see her character develop. I've said it many time before. She's probably the mosty expressive gundam heroine I've seen. Most of them just switch between good girl and psycho.
