Seeing as though it's gamer/internet culture humor, I'd say it's supposed to be funny, but people choose how they want to react. If those that don't understand it want to react in a negative way, they’re free to do so. I’m no one to judge.
“That would make a great owned pic” was just the first thing that popped into my head when I saw that moment in the series, that’s all. No disrespect to the series itself is intended or implied. If no one actually finds it humorous, I guess it belongs on a quake forum or something.

AH! I initially thought it was something computer game/FPS-related (thinking what the hell is OWN-3D).

Actually, "pwned" comes from the latest trend in "mispelling things in a cool way". Rather, it's a further development of "leet" speek.
