Every program can slow down a computer. The question is, is it noticeable? Now I don't notice any slow downs unless I leave Azureus alone running by itself for a long period of time—such as overnight while I'm sleeping. But then again, I have a P4 at 2.8GHz with hyperthreading and over 2GB of RAM. So your mileage may very.

No java.
Uses less than 15 megs of ram.
Has pretty much all the features in Azureus.

Java is a security nightmare. Why would you even want to run it?

Windows is a security nightmare, but people still run it because it's convenient and easy to use.

Actually, Java runs in a sandbox. It won't interact with your desktop unless you specify that you "allow" access. the Sandbox prevents malicious applications from breaking into your system. There are limitations on what applets can do and can not do.

There are three levels of protection: byte code verifiers, applet class loader and security manager. See the JAVA documentations for more information.

Yes, there are security issues but there's no 100% secure applications out there.
