Computer expert needed!

So I ran into the misfortune of my little cousin (7 yrs old) having had access to my computer for 4 hrs without me knowing about it. Fortunately, nothing to severe happened to my computer. I just lost some documents, bookmarked websites, and now I have tons of porn sites in my hard drive history (the little bastard thought they were funny).

My question is: How can I recover those bookmarked pages? I heard that everything you do on the computer is burned permantely into your hardrive or something. I would like to know how to gain access to it and recover my lost documents as well as those webpages. I need them for research on my project. If possible, I'd also like to get rid of those porn site "residue." It's bad enough that assholes can send you spyware already, if that stuff is in my computer, mroe spyware will come. I've earsed history and cookie for internet explorer and firefox, then I used spybot to get rid of any spyware. Am I 100% clean now? or is there a method to be even mre clean? More important than that, are those webpage bookmarks lost? It was a big pain to find those sites. Thanks for any help!

The easiest method is to use System Restore. First check if you have the option enabled in the Control Panel. If it is, choose to restore from a certain point, and pick a date before your cousin accessed it. If you do a full system restore, everything should be back to normal.

I should've left that on, but the only restore point I have is when I first got the computer. I'm not planning on doing a complete system restore either, because I have way too many files to keep. (about 50 gigs of stuff).

System restore will very likely NOT work. It does not save random files by default. It only saves files that are flagged certain ways and are in certain locations
(Note the list here: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_restore.htm )

If you have modified the bookmarks file since then, all might be lost. (All might be lost anyway because if the file was overwritten, then the data is gone.) You need to grab a undelete toy and hope that it can find the residue from the original bookmarks file. (Google for one is your best bet, be careful cause there are lots of crapware ones. I unfortunatly havent needed one in a long time so I can't name any.) The other option would have been to check your history, but you deleted that.

Everything you do on your computer is saved on the HD, until that area of the HD is used again. If it overwrote the original file in the same location on the harddrive, its gone. What undeleting does is find these parts of the HD which have files that are not written over yet and is able to recover them. As for getting rid of the porn site crap, normal spyware sweep should care of it. (Adaware, spybot, ms-antispyware). Attempt to recover the bookmarks FIRST, then clean up.

Bayoab has said everything...
However its not a loss that you disabled System restore.
Its useful mostly when drivers go bad after an install, other than that its worthless.

Its not a reset button like most people tend to believe...

Next time export the bookmarks into a file. I do that. So whatever happens to the browser I can always import it back.

How do you enable that option? Where is it? Under "automatic update"?

Ensure that System Restore is turned on first.
Control Panel -> System Properties -> System Restore tab.

To do System Restore, go to Start -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.

I also use Spybot S&D, it's not a bad program, but you will need more than that to be 100% clean.

Go to this thread where I and others have posted advice on getting free security help and programs.

Protection package that you recommend
http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=31378

Look for my post entitled-
General Recommendation of Security Sites to Bookmark and Visit.

Section below:

"On-Demand Malware I use: Spybot S&D, X-Cleaner, aSquared, Ad-Ware Personal, Ewido, Spycatcher-Express, Malware Destroyer

Also get something like CCleaner to clean up internet and computer data; just don’t install the Yahoo Toolbar that comes with it if you don’t want it. Other than that it's a good tool. "

Use that section to get started in cleaning your computer. Afterwards, you can further secure your computer with the other tips.

Also go to http://www.freewarefiles.com/category/utilities.php for more tools if you are interested in further securing you system.

For security stuff look under the headings:
Utilities Categories.
Adware/Spyware Removal

Anti-Virus

Encryption & Security

Read the ratings and visit original program sites to research the software.

Next time I would restrict access to you computer with a password.

If he(I assume) misbehaves again, do a couple rounds of Kumdo sparring to "beat" some sense into him(<-?).

Hope this helps.
