Switch to a client that isn't running on a core that's 2 years outdated.
Such as:
BitTornado
ABC
uTorrent
Azureus

A great client for me is BitComet. Other than DWKnight's suggestions, switch to it whenever you have a bad ISP or the others don't just work for you. Be sure to enable UDP NAT traversal.

Sorry, but due to the limited features of the orginal BitTorrent it is hard to recommend.

Avoid Azureus if you have small RAM, and a relatively slow system - less than 1.5 Ghz. Azureus is a memory sap: the first time I opened it, my computer froze.

Better use uTorrent. (Or BitComet, again, if you have a nasty ISP, and the others don't work. )
