It will have taken 8 years after 3.0 to get this last chapter done. Moreover, it will have been 13 years between 1.0 and the final chapter. Even if the end result becomes very satisfying, you have to say that forcing people to wait for that long is just so wrong.

Also, Anno gave people the great Shin Godzilla during the time of him looking for inspiration for Eva 4. Sounds good to me.

No disrespect to Anno, but I must say that his sense of planning is not the best. I can also say the same thing about James Cameron about Avatar sequels as of now. Any other director-screnwriter who embarks on such an ambitious journey would normally have set a clear timetable for releasing the movies, especially when the story only involves one timeskip.
Peter Jackson always followed a precise timetable to make his 6 movies about Middle-Earth with scripts being all thought out long ahead of production. In the end, he delivered the goods although King Kong stood between both trilogies. |

Yeah the Hobbit trilogy's production is a known mess. Mind you, that was mainly down to the studio not giving Jackson the time he needed to properly plan everything out. Had he had the several years of pre-production he got for Lord of the Rings, we probably would have gotten something a lot less messy. And presumably still two movies, since the three movies thing was basically a last-ditch desperate attempt at getting more pre-production time that was sorely needed.

Jackson never wanted to direct the Hobbit films in the first place. It was supposed to be Guillermo del Toro, but he backed out after all the Tolkien family's legal harassment delayed the project for years.
