As I said.. take my word for it..

And since this is supposed to be a PS3 thread and not a "chipped is bad => swap is good" thread, and with the added info it is deemed illegal in some countries to modify a console and/or play backed up games on it, I will stop with further offtopic conversation.

Ah, I wasn't taking into consideration the laser thing at all.

Regarding patching; I suppose so, though I've yet to encounter a game that's needed patching to be compatible with SwapDisc. Unless you count rebuilding as patching, but that's possible with a single tool, unless you want to do it manually.

I was mainly pushing the SwapDisc + Magic Tools method on the premise of a unvoided warranty and (usually) a lesser cost.

On the original topic...

What do you guys think about the Sixaxis controller?
Do you think the motion detection will really make that big of a difference in games? Obviously it's not as versatile as the Wiimote. It'd probably be a dumb idea to use the PS2 controller like a racing wheel or even a light gun, unlike the Wiimote.

And what happens if you're lying down while playing? Is it going to force you to sit up straight? Bah.

While we are talking about the modding, ever wondered how long it will take to crack PS3? Because I won't be buying one until a) the prices go down, b) it has good games, and c) the ARRR! -factor.

By the way, I don't want to bother with swaps. One of our local stores sells pre-modded consoles, so I get it all in a neat package anyway, ready for playing. Get game, burn it, and play. And that, certainly, is one thing none of the new consoles can't do yet.

Depends, since the firmware is upgradable like the psp.
So it is either a exploit or a secondary bios module soldered on it,
so you could switch between them, similar to the psp.

A)
The price will drop, if sony revises the current mainboard.
As soon as the ps2 and ps1 emulation is ready the ee+gs and ps2 ram
will be chopped away and the production cost will much less.

b)-

c)
it's not a trick it's a sony

bloody hell, if you got the money to buy this, i suppose you don't really fear opening it up, to have a snoop around, and worry about something going wrong.

I mean hell, its only set you back $600, big deal, get another one....

Forgot mods.
The PS3 has a built-in hard drive.
The first things you'll probably see are DVD-rips of Blu-Ray games and applications to load Blu-Ray images directly from your hard disk.

Affordable Blu-Ray burning is a LONG way away.

You bet your ass there will be.

There's no doubt that the current supply of PS3's will be gone within days.

If Sony doesn't send out more, it'd be a travesty to their finances.

Haha...PS3 doesn't have an internal scaler wtf?

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/746/746282p1.html
Quote:
November 15, 2006 - As final PlayStation 3 units continue to trickle into more and more hands, additional details about how the system works and what it can and can't do are hitting the web. The latest (rather major) tidbit is how the console treats the upscaling and downscaling of 720p titles on televisions that don't support that resolution -- specifically those that are only 1080i capable.

As it turns out, gamers who own older HD sets that feature only 480i, 480p, and 1080i resolution input capabilities will have to settle for the display quality being downsized as the game boots in its 480p mode rather than upscaling the image from its more desirable 720p mode to the TV's 1080i. We tested this development on older HDTV sets with games designed for 720p but not 1080i -- Resistance: Fall of Man, NHL 2K7, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07, and Need for Speed Carbon. Sure enough, the system downshifted all four titles to 480p rather than moving up to 1080i.

The PlayStation 3's competitor, Microsoft's Xbox 360, does upscale 720p games to 1080i if the HD set supports the latter resolution but not the in-between and commonly-employed 720p resolution.

IGN contacted Sony representatives for comment regarding this feature, but SCEA spokespeople have yet to return our phone calls as we went to press (we'll update this story when they do). It is not known yet if this is purely a software issue or a deeper technical problem and whether or not this lack of upscaling might be resolved on launch PS3 systems in future updates of the hardware via downloadable firmware patches.

For the laymen, 720p is a high-definition format that offers a complete 720-pixel line frame on the screen at 24 to 60 frames per second (progressive), while the 1080i signal is presented as two 540-pixel fields that when displayed back to back look like a complete image (interlaced). The difference being that a 720p picture offers quicker refresh rates while 1080i offers more detail with stationary imagery. The maximum resolution of the PlayStation 3 (and currently the maximum for available HDTV sets) is 1080p. It is thus capable of displaying all major standard-definition and high-definition video outputs wherever HD standards are employed (in PS3 games and Blu-Ray Movies, most commonly), but as has already been reported about PS1/PS2 games and DVD playback, it does not currently upscale any lower resolution images to higher image standards.
The PS3 jokes just write them selves...

Not to be unappreciative, but I need evidence (or very reliable heresay), not speculation, as I plan on reselling mine factory-sealed. Of course, if Sony doesn't replenish before the holidays, I'll hang onto it and list toward the middle of December to capitalize on the Christmas frenzy. If Sony does ship a substantial amount between launch and then, I'll probably lose profit waiting like that.

A word of warning as I've removed a few posts for inadvertently providing more information than we find acceptable: Talk about mod chips, the PS3 being a target for crackers, etc. is probably "OK" in the general sense. Please keep that in mind and stick to "generics". Keep clear of posting information aimed at helping people take advantage of whatever exploits are discovered, etc. no links, no names, no software, no groups, no specifics.

mmm....well seems like, lining up to buy a PS3 to sell off on Ebay at rediculous prices, isn't taking advantage or exploiting the PS3.
so yay.

Generally, upscaling and downscaling aren't that good ideas.

Just because I have financial sense doesn't mean that I'm actually going to capitalize on it. Apparently every store in my area has full lines and have closed them off to new arrivals. So, apparently I'm SOL. I suggest calling around your area and getting in line, like, now.

I'm wondering if anyone mentioned these news that happened today for the PS3's launch.

Link removed from site

From this, someone got shot trying to get his own PS3, a pregnant mother ignored her contractions to get one, three PS3 campers were robbed, one used his engagement ring money for his girlfriend but spent it for his own unit ("Stupid!" was the first word that came of out my mouth), and two gunmen robbed a retail store and stole 15 PS3s.

So...is anyone here desperate to steal or hospitalize someone to get one for yourself or for significant other? I'll probably get one after Christmas or later so I can get one calmly and with no guns at all.

EDIT: Also, with someone getting shot over this, Jack Thompson may activate his 'attention-whore' mode again and say that someone was almost shot to death for a video game system.

Well, I think the launch of a new system has become sort of a social event.

Certainly I'm not crazy enough to dish out that much money and waste that much time camping on the sidewalk. I've hospitalized people for lesser reasons than wanting a PS3, though.

I'll probably get a PS3 near the end of its development cycle.

And Jack Thompson doesn't have much of a case for launch-day antics. Well, he never has much of a case for anything.

What I'm going to find interesting is the obvious oncoming legal battles in Europe over PS3 importation.
PS3 is being launched in Europe in, oh my God, MARCH 07. I'm not sure how they're going to hold out that long. It's pretty ridiculous though.

Yea, people should just lay back a little bit. New, expensive consoles in the market. Big deal. I also read that some kid got beaten up, by a person behind him in the line, simply because the kid got the last console.

Come to think of it, perhaps *I* should start importing those consoles and rip off the fanboys. Business is business after all and if someone is willing to pay 1.000 € of some silly console, all the better for me.
