Hayate the Combat Butler {Hayate no Gotoku!} generic discussion

I feel strange about this, considering all the praise, but I was disappointed by that first episode. The humor didn't reach me, and even the voice acting -- much as I love the three main seiyuu -- didn't appeal to me. I thought maybe sound director Watanabe Jun got them to do the wrong voices, at least for me (clearly not for other people, though).

But the show does have at least two great hooks: the chara-des of the sweet young rich girl, and the idea of the invincible, somewhat "unlucky" but really capable, young butler.

This show seems targetted at a younger audience than the stuff you usually seem to like.
After the first episode, it will get even more simpleminded in the plot department. (based upon what I have read so far, I don't expect any serious sad/bittersweet/ or really deep moments of any kind, instead just slapstick comedy etc)

That said, it should be easy to watch, and I look forward to it.

After all those in-your-face anime references by SHAFT, it was good to see some blink and you'll miss it parodies inserted in Hayate. There was that Gendo Ikari boss, the witch Dorothy from MAR in a hooker poster....

The seiyuu were perfect, as was the narrator. The animation was also noticeably better than what I'd seen in the PVs.

What, no one else has love for Optimus Prime and the RX-78-2? What about the Pinkachu or God Magnus?

Very fun episode, nice to see the manga in animated form, and......being the big Mahoraba fan that I am, I usually reserved Ryoko Shiraishi to relate to Mahoraba only, but.....nice to see an almost identical Ryuushi Shiratori again

Here are my full thoughts for Hayate no Gotoku episode 1

I actually enjoyed this episode a lot (unlike my dissapointment with Seto no Hanayome), I came in with low expectations for this series and so maybe that is why I quite enjoyed it. I might check out the manga for this series now, there are about 10 volumes out I think(?)

Now that I think about it, they do cutted a part that I liked a lot, when Hayate gets slamed by the car and...

Spoiler for Manga, really minor:

starts thinking, that maybe if he dies there some people will be sad and get worried about him, but keeps thinking and realizes that his parents will at least get some insurance money and will be happy about it, and gets a total hp refuel XD, it was great IMO

Just watched the first episode.

From what I've read in some posts here, seems I was right with my assumption on the target audience while watching the opening. Flashy pinky karaoke in original broadcasting is usually reserved for younger audiences, as I seem to notice. Still, I decided to give it a try.

The characters where fun enough in their own right, but the funniest of them all is by all means 天の声, by Wakamoto Norio . It has its WTF moments, which is something I like, but still, it's all kind of dragged back by my dislike of the over-simplistic character designs. I hope they come up with better storytelling and more WTF moments, or maybe I'll end up dropping the series in favor of others.

Oh, and about that last censorship moment, what did Hayate exactly say before collapsing? He spoke too quickly for me to understand it all... I'm sure he was referring to being run over by a car, though.

anyways, it looks interesting enough, definently doesn't look that serious, which isn't a bad thing. Though since I have a limited understanding of japanese, I didn't really know what was going on, but i'll check out the first few episodes.

I liked that part in the manga too, I'm not sure why they cut it...it's perfectly in character for his parents.

I guess given they put two chapters of the manga into one episode, they had to cut something.

Now it's time to sit back and hope it'll be fansubbed...although since it's staying pretty close to the manga, I might try to watch it raw until it gets beyond volume 2.

Yeah thats another one, though it was someway handled. Well, cuting some things is inevitable and I think the first episode delivers anyways.
BTW, I hope with all my heart that they manage to keep all the Gundam references.

Yes it is--although in my head I end up picturing Onsokumaru doing the narration. I think I'll always associate his voice with that character now...

Norio Wakamoto and This guy are probably my favourite narrator voices of all time. This is one of those rare cases where I can say the casting is perfect and I have no problems at all with any aspect of the shows presentation. Looking forward to the sub very much.

I was wondering before, how could they encode 1024x264 Pumpkin so it would die on me, yet Yoroshiku's Kekkaishi in 1024x264 was perfectly playable ? Now they just decided to only release for the rich kids.
