I was thinking it had something to do with them fighting against the drones.

Any villian who uses mindless machines as foot soldiers just blindly send in large numbers of them... Like a riot

Hence, it's a force that... deals with large numbers of foe

Maybe it is because of the police element in it? Riot Forces usually have specialised equipment to deal with riots, and are usually shown to be well-equipped (when you get to see them on the news). Perhaps they were going for the image, and not for the job details.

Cheers.
Hehe, like Skyfall - I'd think (context aside) that this was a force to cause riots; so in that contextual sense it must be Engrish. Maybe I'm just too used to "Riot Police." Yeah, so they thought "Force" would sound better than "Police." Then again, Chaos2Frozen's point of view works too.

Heheh.

Numbers doesn't matter if you have a group that deals massive AOE and LOS attacks

You can't spell "damage" without "mage"

The problem in that argument is that I don't think they even remotely qualify as...foot soldiers.

The current standard of drones shown proves that they have literally no offensive capabilities, and that they are very fragile. Not fire-proof wtf? All they've got is decent anti-magic fields which decent mages can easily beat with some tactical planning, and speed, which is nothing too great either. I mean, for flying drones, they don't even try to play dirty by flying HIGH against opponents that can't fly...or maybe it was emulated that way in the Danger Room-wannabe so that the rookies actually have a chance. Whatever.

I mean...where are the Droidekas of Nanoha-verse? You'd think they'd add some physical weaponry on drones had they wanted it to be an even remote threat to TSAB? By that, I'm expecting some T-800/Droideka function-like droids (( actually battle-worthy )) by these villians half-way through StrikerS, or I will be dissapointed.

I mean, Vita thinks handling a bunch of fragile drones that has nothing on physical-based Velka that also don't hit back is getting tougher. The rookies didn't exactly win easy, and Teana needed to exert herself completely to destroy just 2. What if they actually have offensive capabilities?

Perhaps it is more of a symbolic meaning? As in... a squad that decides for themselves(Hayate/Fate/Nanoha) where and when to go and what to do etc... answer to nobody (more or less) ..kinda

Kinda like a squad that doesn't need to sit around and wait until all the paper work is cleared before they are allowed to act Though i bet they are going to act anyway if civilians or something is in danger, official permission or not...hence riot force

Yeah... I've been think about that...

Maybe it's because our heroes are too much of a match for them, but they're really really easy... Makes you wonder why they considered them a threat... Probably it's because they're sent to capture Lost logias...

Perhaps they're just the 'worker' class?

That's really giving them alot of power and trust.

"To act with or without permission as they see fit..."

No wonder the knights are worry about backlash....

@Chaos: It's easy for them, but machines can literally be in more than one place at once, and even Starlight Breaker has a maximum range, and with civilians around a blunt assault is a

Hmm... 1 human opponent sitting atop a massive machine empire.

*Conjures an image of Nanoha and Fate fighting off Sentinel-like machines et la Matrix for all to see*

Ah yessss... Don't you feel the coming darkness... And knowing the groundbreaking nature of Nanoha, they'd probably have anime bullet time too. ^^

Well I wasn't expecting them to clear the field with one shot , but so far the drones aren't actually fighting back... Well, as far as I could tell.

Well, at least those simulated Drones did fight back (they fired some bolts to Erio), so I suppose real one would, too.

What's more is that they're refered to as "Gadget Drone Type-1" in speech.
I sense more of them are on their way...

Well, there's that bigger sized one that the 4 of them destroyed in the OP... Then there's the aerial ones that Nanoha and Fate totaled...

Maybe not all drones are AMF-protected...

About the Drones... some things to bear in mind.
  • Vita commented in Ep02 that the Drones were getting better, so we know that the organisation behind the Drones also believe in quality, and not just quantity.
    .
  • The Drones used against the cadets are most probably not "full-fledged" Drones, but modified ones that are tamer than the originals. It was more of a test to see how they will fight against AMF-using opponents (since that is the whole purpose of their Section). "Throwing Your Cubs Into The Pit" may be a valid metaphor, but no sane modern military does that if they want to retain their soldiers (this ain't Sparta, yo).
Cheers.

Nanoha clearly states that these Drones are simulated beings, and AMF effect is also emulated by their devices as if there's actual AMF, probably controlled through the chip Charlie mentions that she added right before the training.

Still, aren't the drones supposed to possess AMF that provides AAA-level protection to the extent where Accel Shooter had no effect? And yet Variable Shoot got through not one but 2.

Not to mention the AI of the real drones seem to be wipe out everything in it's path that blocks it's objectives to extents of destroying a whole Lost Logia excavation site. The emulated drones seem more interested in running away than engaging those in their way.

Aye. Hence the "tamer" part of my prior post. I am not questioning the abilities of the simulated Drones, but the extent in which they have been programmed to behave.

Cheers.

Variable Shooter is a sorcery DESIGNED specifically to pierce magic fields

That's the difference

I'm not sure who said it, but it's probably yet another mecha homage to Gundam F-91's Variable Speed Beam Riffle

Though, from what I've seen it's not very mana efficient on Teana and thus better to rely on other tactics

You are right on VS being special for AMF. VS and VSBR name might be similar but they work differently, VSBR more like controlling the output of the beam power from what i can remember.

Erio tactic to destroy the bridge and make em collapse on the drone look way less tiring and complicated than VS ^^

Agreed. From the conversation in the manga I got the impression that nothing, no matter how powerful, will penetrate AMF if it isn't designed to (I don't care if it's R1 casting annihilation lightning, it just won't go through... though R1 could probably redesign the spell on-the-fly like she did SB, bless her overpowered machine soul), but a correctly-designed spell will regardless of its power.

It adds an extra dimension to the combat in that there's now a major factor affecting the usefulness of spells beyond just their raw power and the unfortunately relatively minimized ease-of-use/tactical factors like casting time, projectile speed/control/range, etc. etc.

this is getting a bit off topic but

VSBR has two settings

thick beam, thus more damage upon contact. Similar to Divine Buster
thin compressed beam, faster velocity. designed to pierce beam shields. has a much smaller target area

now from what I have seen instead of charging up and making the magic bullet Xbox / Frieza ball of death sized, Teana compresses it into a compact multilayered bullet

thus the comparison

And yes, Teana is at disadvantage for being pure midchilda style compared to her team mates
