Anime: Exam/Competitions

I has been a while since the last time I asked for suggestion.
This time, I am interested in major examinations/tournaments in any form which the candidates compete against each other. The followings are the examples which I have watched.

Yakitate Japan - newcomers' tournament
Hunter x Hunter - hunter exam
Naruto - chuunin exam

The length of the arc alone usually spans from 10 to over 20 episodes.

I really enjoy these very much and are looking for similar ones. Helps appreciated.

And oh, no mecha please.

Thanks

There is a big tournament arc in Yu Yu Hakusho that involves all the main characters, although I don't recall what episodes it took place in.

Of course, Yu Gi Oh! has the big "Duel-Monsters" tournaments, and the whole series is based on characters battleing one another in games.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Yu Gi Oh! caught my eye recently when I was sourcing for HxH GI clones but I was hesitant due to its poor ratings and high episode counts.

*In my opinion, the best series are between 3 seasons long and 2 years (GTO, FMA, HxH, Kenshin, 12K, etc.)

Yu Yu Hakusho seems interesting, in its underworld setting. I will definitely try it some day.

Dragonball, an old anime which I saw on TV when I'm a kid. I don't think it appeals to me with main character shooting some kind of dragonball from his hand(?).

I think a lot of the poor ratings for the show, relate to the 4Kids dubbed version. In case you don't know, 4Kids is widely hated in the fan community for taking popular japanese anime and making major changes to the story, characters and content in their "localization" process. I have not seen the unedited Japanese version of the show, but my understanding was that it was significantly censored and "dumbed down" for the show's target audience (pre-teens) in the US.

You might want to watch these anime:

Flame of Recca
Shaman King
Angelic Layer
The Law of Ueki

Most of these are involved in fighting tournament. Refer to ANN website to know more details of the anime

Hope that helps!!

Rozen Maiden (both seasons) revolves around the "Alice Game" where the dolls try to eliminate all their rivals.

Is that sarcasm >: ( !!!! I truely and honestly think dragonball was a great anime. The tournament parts were fun to watch and me having watched dbz first it was fun to watch all the characters and how they grew up. Besides that i guess you could kinda watch gantz. Gantz takes people before they die into a room and makes them fight aliens (Kindasortamaybe tournament style?) its a fun anime none theless

A lot of sports animes spring to mind, a few ppl already mentioned Prince of Tennis. (I refer of course to the unlicenced OVA...)

Rockman.EXE also comes to mind, not sure how long exactly their tournament arc was though. Has been licenced though, called "Megaman Battle Network" iirc. I dunno whether whoever licenced it releases it on DVD with dual-audio though.

Oooh, and did anyone mention Flame of Recca? Not one of my favourites tbh, but definitely fits the description.

Really? I've seen the whole series in fansubs through ep 135, but only a sporadic number of the dubs on Cartoon Network, but it seemed like a pretty good dub job to me that didn't change anything important.

I second this, a newbie team that does the shounen thing and get better and better so they can get into the 'Christmas Bowl.' Your tournement criteria is met here.
Main character can get on your nerve
