Exclamation Cyborg moths - Where are the Knight Sabers when we need them?

Quote:
Scientists are growing flesh around computer parts to create cyborg moths, which can be controlled remotely
The Times Online has a very interesting article about cyborgs, although they are cyborg moths. The article is located at:

http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/...cle1831494.ece

Well, what do people think?

That is pretty cool... However I am sure animal rights activists will get upset if they start using these "cyber moths" I am sure that someone will object to controlling insects with computer chips.

The article mentions that they have already driven rats with a joystick, so, I think you are right.

People probally wont mind rats so much, because there is a deep hatred of rats in most places, however as soon as they start to control animals that are cuter people will get upset.

I think these cyber moths could be useful for gathering intellegence for warfare though, however they do put a literal meaning to "fly on the wall"

Given that there is such little difference between a bunny and a rat, they probably chose the rat for that reason. I'm sure they could do the exact same thing with a bunny, but people are more likely to pity a bunny than they would be to pity a rat that is wired to a joystick.

Smart move to say "Moth" instead of "Butterfly." Avoided uproar with that one! lol

LOL. True.

My thoughts:

one of the most ambitious robotics projects
Dubious. It is dubious to say that implanting a chip in a cocoon will allow one to take over the Moth's nervous system, to control it's nervous system. I think this is a timeless example of media-exaggeration, and notice too that more than half of the article wasn't about the Moths.

Chi's an android, not a cyborg...

And yeah, bug spray can literally put all that money down the toilet...

It seems the production costs are relatively low, but who knows how much money was already spent on R&D?

It does seem like it would be effective, though. Although easy to kill, as pointed out above, it has the advantage of seeming innocuous. Someone could fly one into your house, and it could pretty much sit in some corner without your noticing it for a good while.

Now I don't know if the operator needs to feed it it keep it going. If so, that could complicate matters, since moving it around is prone to attract more attention.

I prefer the rat brain that was trained as an autopilot for a fighter jet simulation.

I see a whole new way of campdefense thought up by the insurgents to counteract the sneakiness of the cybertronic moth, after reading this interview..

Their own miniature autonomous defense.
Spoiler for weapon of moth destruction:
