Gotta love beach episodes. Every anime series should have one.

Gotta love how people complain and whine about it too.

... so, for the poetic references and dragon origins, we were directed towards the book of Job, this week?

It's too bad I can't give you a +1 for this. I had the very same thought. Thinking back though the episode, the production team did a wonderful job setting up that visual joke.

Honestly, I believe that I am actually liking the anime slightly better than the source. The team is just killing it.

I find that I am enjoying the anime because I feel it is ... enriching the source material a bit while not really changing the essence of the narrative. The anime original elements have almost all fit nicely for me, and when (after ep 5, I think?) I got inspired to go back through the manga on a re-read I found it was a fresh reading that was interesting for me.

Personal preference wise I still prefer the mangaka's slightly odd art style as it somehow harmonizes with his sense of humor and one-liners so well, but yes ... on the whole I also think KyoAni is doing a good job here thus far.

Me, I was worried about the bear in the training episode. And what happened to the crane?

If this was "Kobayashi's Bizarre Adventure" you know that dog wouldn't have been so lucky.

Kobayashi appears deadpan and unemotive but she's really quite perceptive and compassionate. She offers Tohru the chance to go dragon, once full-on at the beach and once partially (tail and wings) at Comiket. She knows Tohru feels limited by the basic human-with-horns appearance she is restricted to in public and gives her the chance to be what she really is, a dragon, when she can.

Kanna's bug research report for school ("moist", "flaky", "crunchy") is going to raise some eyebrows when she hands it in.

Yes, Comiket really is like that, only bigger (there are two halls, East and West as well as other spaces) and more crowded. The last Comiket I attended a few years back had over 500,000 attendees.

Interesting to contrast it with London comic-cons. Theirs typically a mean age of late teens for a start.

Having read the manga chapter that the beach portion is based on, I was waiting for the moment where she tries to eat the dog (with Shouta and Lucoa stopping her).

You mean to say in the manga, she actually tried?

My mind is blown if that were animated.

No, the dog wasn't in the manga. But she basically spent the chapter eating every critter she ran into (all of which were, fortunately, not pets... as far as we know) so with that in mind we see her staring at a dog...

The idea that the poodle might be in trouble when Kanna became interested seems to have struck nearly everyone who watched this episode, myself included. The dog never registered alarm.

That's an other possibility worth considering.

Tohru has stated on occasion that she has no use for deities. With Rahab and Leviathan referenced in this seventh episode, mentioned here by name this time, it seems clear once more that Tohru's position includes the god(s) of the Abrahamic religions - although I was too narrow in my earlier E.7 comment linking the legendary creatures to just one book from their scriptural mythologies. Given the circumstances it seems a little more doubtful that Tohru would have confused the creature she encountered underwater with Rahab from the book of Joshua, but that still leaves other books besides Job’s for sources of information about the ocean dwelling variety.

Though Tohru here indicates having spend time in the ocean deeps, I'm not sure the way she phrased it in this episode can be interpreted as confirmation that she herself originates there. Neither, though, does the way it came up this time eliminate the possibility...
Her origins remain the most enigmatic.

Isn't she supposed to be Alastor [arasu tooru]?

At this time, as far as we know, Tooru is not any specific mythological entity.

I don't know much about these details of Abrahamic mythology, but one interesting (if frivolous) detail that came to mind was that in the Soul Reaver game, in which all vampire lieutenants were named after biblical figures, Rahab was the one who had adapted to water - the entire boss fight was in a half-immersed ruined church and defeating him gave you the power to swim . I wonder if there's a link or if it's just a coincidence.

Rahab and Leviathan are actually mixed up in mythological tales. So assuming all the legends exist somewhere in the Kobayashi multiverse, it is not strange at all that one underwater dragon be mistaken for another.

Tohru doesn't read religious texts, she just talks about the dragons as actual creatures and not just words in a book.

That is not strange. With that sentence you quoted, I tried to indicate that there is more than one Rahab in those texts. One of them, appearing a.o. places in the book of Joshua, is a human being while another Rahab is described as a sea creature in different sections from the same bundle loosely tied and bound together. The latter is probably the Rahab previously encountered underwater by Tohru, while the former is less likely to have dwelled below the surface of an ocean. That woman was never a sea creature and thus the book of Joshua, may not have any bearing on Tohru's past.

Tohru doesn't read the texts but her experiences are shaped by those who inhabit them and thus inform us about her life, in addition to the lives of her companions, and her personal -former- adversaries. In the "Kobayashi" universe all myths are true and -though modified - still recognisable. Based on what is depicted, we can visit the places she has been and thereby recreate who she has been. Even if "who Tohru is supposed to be" turns out to be less specific than the other dragons who make an appearance here. There are maps and legends for these territories and even if they occasionally lead us astray, they're still interesting to explore, I think you agree, to some degree.

Alastor added to the list of "candidates" for Tohru, together with the "Soul Reaver Games" for an invocation of the multi-verse and its creatures, with which both Tohru and Kobayashi may already be somewhat familiar, though from different perspectives.

It might have been better if Kanna had

Watched episode 7:

Another fun episode. So the Comiket is too much even for a maid dragon, she got so thirsty. XD Oh, and poor Fafnir-san.. I would have bought a copy of Curse Anhthology if I was there.

Oww.. Tohru is a good "cosplayer" Photogs are piling up on her. That kind of thing happens to cosplayers with plenty of appeal or has a nice costume - or both in our cosplay community over here ^^ (which reminds me, I still have plenty of cosplay pics from Otaku Expo 2017 that need to be sorted ><).

And lastly,,,, I think Tohru is friends with Rahab, or at least has good relations with that creature because she called out to it. Too bad it was the wrong person she called to... that Leviathan must be immensely powerful, because even Tohru is afraid of it.
