What the ****?!?! One of my favorite titles is getting a new series? What is this trickery?!

Silliness aside though, my hope is that this is the Jinchuu arc finally animated properly. My expectation is the Hokkaido story, but with all remakes going on this could very well be a remake too.

But seriously, where the heck did this come from after all this time?

Wow, color me surprised. I didn't think the franchise would ever be revived after Watasuki's controversy .

Well, I am a fan of the franchise, so I hope whatever form this animation takes does it justice. I'd be fine with finally properly adapting the Jinchu arc or a remake that adapts everything .

I'm curious if they'll try to bring back as much of the original cast as possible...

If it is Jinchu arc, I hope Nozomu Sasaki reprise his role as Enishi.

I don't think we will be getting the Jinchuu arc, that is a continuation which is a bit far to bridge to the original series. If they intend to reintroduce to newer generations and extend the life of the franchise, then it will mean re-adapting from the beginning. Based on the current situation, I do think that this new anime adaptation will be for the current running Hokkaido arc.

p.s. At least the responses here are better instead of the cancel culture mentality at the other forum where any announcement of Rurouni Kenshin material would draw out.

I too fear we’re fated for Hokkaido only. But it is worth asking why a frankly mediocre shounen like Shaman King would get a full reboot (from the same studio) while a series broadly acknowledged as one of the best ever, which has spawned a hugely successful movie franchise, would not.

We know that publishers greenlight anime adaptations to sell more volumes of the manga. Thus, the Hokkaido arc only seems highly likely since this is the current serialisation of the Rurouni Kenshin franchise. It is a separate title from the original manga series.

I have also mentioned above, there is a possibility of reboot/fresh adaptation from the start since that would help to introduce the series to newer generations. This would help bring the series back into focus. The purpose of Shaman King's full reboot was really to reinvigorate the franchise.

I mean, the Rurouni Kenshin movie series was, in my opinion, one of the most well-made live action adaptations of an anime series, and it got bigger due to being released on Netflix. Japan seeing the global reception of the RK live action series probably pushed them into this decision.

Regarding Hokkaido and Jinchuu, odds are that they will go straight into the Hokkaido Arc, seeing that it's the ongoing story arc and The Final had already covered the Jinchuu Arc.

Karakuri Circus and Ushio and Tora, written by a legend, doesn't get enough episodes to fully animate its story, and something like Fruits Basket, gets a million episodes in its anime. The anime industry has not recently been known for being smart or respectful.

Why? Because the author was arrested before?

When you're arrested for possession of real child pornography and admitting to being a pedophile, is it any wonder there would be people who refuse to engage with your works any longer?

As a big fan of Ushio and Tora and Karakuri, very much agree. This is also my grief with Houshin Engi, TBH.

Considering how old and how finished those mangas are, just the fact that they received anime adaptation (regardless of pacing & skipped materials) with more episodes than your standard season is already a miracle in and of itself IMO. And let's be honest, most people already long forgotten or didn't know about those two IPs before their anime announcement and Furuba is the more popular title. And I'm speaking as someone who owned the tank volumes of those Ushio & Karakuri titles.

And let's just be grateful that Ushio & Karakuri anime didn't suffer as much as Berserk TV adaptation.

It's less about him being arrested and more about what he actually did to warrant the arrest .

Yep, I've already seen some of the vitriol about Watsuki elsewhere... because another mangaka got arrested recently for something along the same lines.

That said, remember that the Japanese rarely give a shit about what Westerners think (for better or for worse). And as I have repeated ad naseum online... anime and manga's primary target is the Japanese audience, for obvious reasons. Add on to that the RK Live Action films have been the only successful anime-to-LA adaptation, and I have no doubt nostalgia glasses are also on for some folks... I'm not entirely surprised. I've certainly seen several magazine covers with the Hokkaido Arc being covered here in Japan.

One argument in favor of a total reboot, I suppose, is that it would buy another year for Hokkaido-hen to build up material. It's only at 40 chapters right now.

True, my impression of the Hokkaido arc is that there isn't quite enough chapters yet for a 1 season. Esp. since the overall plot is still ongoing and I can't think of a good cutoff point for a 1 season to end on.
Total reboot a la Shaman King would be more likely IMO.

Ongoing and selling quite well. The hiatus was only 5 or 6 months.

Well, it is clear that the industry doesn't care. Good for them.

I doubt that, but that also comes from me who doesn't care enough about Furuba to know its current popularity.

I mean, Furuba is one of the most popular shoujo ever, certainly a bigger seller than Karikuri or Ushio to Tora. But RuroKen is a bigger seller than any of them.
