I was thinking whether the woman on the mahjong magazine is her mom?

If you are talking about the magazine, that's her sister (Teru/age 17) who is a mahjong player and has won a number of tournaments.

It's in the manga in that scene in ep2. I have no idea what Gonzo left out that detail.

yes this baffled me too, as I see it it would make no difference showing it later than now...unless they have some sort of AO idea in mind

The woman on the magazine cover is not her mom.

Not like it will affect anything in the anime. Heck, I don't even remember seeing her face after 5 volumes.

About Kyou, I thought they left out the detail about why did he join the Mahjong club, aren't they? I didn't see they mention about it in the first ep.
Spoiler for Reason:

And Yuuki likes Tacos. Case ended.

Wow the whole family must be really good at Mahjong then.

The idea is to show event in a future episode as a surprise, not knowing about it did came as a surprise and would make a good plot wouldn't you agree. As an anime viewer it would be ineteresting not to know. Its debatable if it is left out of simple to enhance the experience for anime watchers or simply left out.

i wasn't aware that it was a mahjong magazine. that explains a good amount. so that would imply family trouble? maybe?

In the anime, it's actually readable that the magazine name is Mahjong weekly and she says "Sister" after looking at the 57th page. This tells us 1) her sister plays mahjong and 2) she's good enough to appear in a mahjong periodical.

I love this anime. It's cute, and I can follow it. Except the Mahjong part, I suck at that. Love the characters, love the voices, and it's a lot cuter then "the other" mahjong anime.

I think this anime fails to explain Mahjong. The way they went with HnG to explain Go was much better.

It's not attempting to explain mahjong. Not in the slightest.

it's not her mom but some other character who would appear in 2-3 episodes.

Considering the pace, I expect she will appear in next ep.

I also fail to see where did it try to explain Mahjong.

I am just thinking that it's only episode 2 and this is the level of yuri tension... the next episodes after the beginning arc will be exploding with yuri-ness all over... and it may not be the more subtle kind we seen in the manga lolz

My yuri-detection-radar is kind of dull lately, or it's just in denial mode, but I didn't notice that high level of yuri tension you mentioned =/

Episode 2 as I expected, the pacing isn't so fast or too slow, and they resolved Saki's problem so we can move onto the next awesome part faster, the National Tournament (although I suspect we won't be able to see the tournament until ep 5). Nodoka's voice is kinda soft at certain point where I expected her to be much more, well, stronger or more aggressive, but I guess it's also fine. The president is as awesome as ever. If they keep on with this effect and animation quality, I don't think my heart can handle later games XD.
I like the ED better than the OP, although I'd choose both as my favorite. The ED is just, well, too cute.

As usual, I claim the 3 lolis in this show, but there is one girl that keep my interest (I bet anyone that hasn't read the manga won't notice her ):
Spoiler for Why did I need spoiler tag again? Not like you can see her.:
