Yes, you could say she faked her death (under Villar's orders, if I'm not remembering wrong) to escape having to serve Milza or be executed by him.

Villar was just bad at defending it. The castle is so easy to defend with only a bridge leading to it.

Cut off the bridge and focus all your forces on retaliating against the enemy navy; you can hold forever.

Not really. Laura asked Helga for poison, as the head mage she was taking responsibility by suiciding. But Helga (the healing expert) gave her something that helped her faked her death without her knowing. After Villar's death, Helga was relinquished of her duties and went back to 'neutral'. She left with Laura's 'body' for Elam. It was Laura's 'second chance' for a new life since she already honorably took responsibility, but she decided to return to the battlefield and served Edokia instead.
