The scenery artwork is definitely the highlight of the show. Some of it is truly gorgeous, and in brief moments even breathtaking.
The BGM is often quite nice as well. The girls are all reasonably likeable and well-designed. But honestly, scenery beauty aside, this show seems a bit too dull/weightless to me. I'm just not seeing much hook here. Even Tamayura seems, well, aggressive compared to this show.

I too find this a little more biting than the monotonally sweet Tamayura. That might give it a little more staying power for me.

The first episode of Tamayura ~Hitotose~ had much more compelling pathos to it than the first episode of Non Non Biyori, imo.

I don't that's really the case at all. From the start of the manga, Suguru's been treated as a joke. He's just... there, and more often than not the girls forget that he's part of the class.
As for those looking for any kind of hook or plot, you might be disappointed a bit. Most of the stories are episodic, and either deal with Hotaru experiencing the country life (there's a chapter where she finds about corner stands for example), or the girls trying to find stuff to do with their time (which given where they are, they have a whole lot of). And yes, Tamayura had a gradual coming of age thing going for it, for all four of the group of friends, but it was more visible for Potte. Non Non Biyori hasn't shown any of that, at least in the 3 translated volumes our of the 6 or so out so far that I've read.

the wind instrumental tracks, the harmonica, the view of the mountains did this for me. Having some unexpected punchlines also helps a lot.
The slight moments of confusion shown by Hotarun keeps the story in focus, though not sure how the later episodes will go.

The amount of scenery porn in this is just fantastic. I liked the soothing backgrounds to be honest. I've read some of the manga itself but the anime gives a much slower, flowing pace than the manga, which was much more straightforward in execution. I guess these types of shows are the ones getting much better pacing over 20-odd minutes than other genres.
The character interaction was pretty decent for a first-episode; you can already see the relationship dynamic (granted, it's mainly focused on the core five four). I liked how the brother's lack of presence was played with where nobody noticed he fell into a rotted part of the floor. |

Episode 2:
Hotaru... what are you doing developing a crush on your cute senpai already? Get a grip, fifth-grader! I don't care if she is small and cute! (BTW, speaking as someone who looked at least five years younger than his true age up until early high school, I can tell you that small kids in real life don't generally get that kind of "squee, aren't they adorable?!" reaction.) Koma-chan's voice sounds awfully familiar... *checks MAL* Nyaruko, I knew it. I think the glasses were probably the final straw in making Hotaru unrecognizable. I suppose you could say they make her look more sophisticated, and she didn't do that bad a job with the makeup either, but really girl! Trying way too hard. You scared and confused your poor senpai.
