It's going surprisingly slow, unless it's for 26 eps?

I don't think anyone else knows about it. Except maybe the mother. It's in a secret room and the maids get fired if they get too close to her.

My God, Thursdays are what Mondays were last season, maybe worse. Tsuritama, Sakamichi, E7, Lupin, Sankarea, Shirokuma... It's crazy.

I certainly get the SHAFT vibe here - you'd have to be blind not to - but does anyone else feel a very strong Mawaru Penguin Drum thing after this week? I mean you have Kimura Ryouhei as the male lead, and Hashimoto Yukari doing the soundtrack for starters. But the whole scenario - especially Rea's tragic situation - sounds like something Ikuhara would have dreamed up.

some anime original scenes to flesh out the characters though they don't feel out of place much.

Though now I wonder if they are taking too much time.

I want to see that confession scene......=3=

This is probably the first DEEN anime in basically over half a decade that I didn't find outright terrible.

Poor Rea, such a sad life she's been going through. Boy that Daddy's got problems and needs to be thrown into the loony house.

I felt kind of bad for Babu even though he's already dead. He's been stuck in a ice box for 5 days and then he's owner totally overdoses him with that potion...lol. I was like holy crap man that's a bit too much drugging going on there. I would understand if it was a human but damn that's a big jar of juice he's shoving down that dead cat. With that much stuff in Babu I can see why he bounced outta of the box.

Anyway, my big question is how the heck they managed to all that liquid down the throat of a dead cat.
I think what he meant was more like when you reach that part on the manga you think: "oh so thats why he was doing those creepy things to Rea... he's still wrong though". Just this nothing much, it's not like it makes you think he was right or less wrong, He's still very very creepy.

This is an area that shouldn't be under discussion here, in any case. Manga spoilers are manga spoilers, be they large or small.

I agree with how ridiculous Thursdays are. I appreciate that there are so many good anime this season, but dammit, space that shit out. I need some time to take in all the awesomeness! Although it's ten times worse if you're trying to blog them all.

I don't know anything about Ikuhara, but I have seen Penguin. The similarity I see is the portrayal of kids in tragic situations caused by parents, and there's a big creep factor to it. This may sound weird, but I'd be more comfortable if Rea's misery was due to more "conventional" bad parenting, like getting beat because her father is a violent drunk.

I'd say that Sankarea is more similar to Kurenai than Penguin in terms of themes, tone and plot settings. There are elements of black humour interspersed with social commentary, whereas Penguin was mostly in-your-face symbolism redolent of just a tad too much self-indulgent hyperbole.

Second episode in, and I greatly like what I see. Sankarea is shaping up well as a sleeper hit for the season. It's also nice, in a way, to see a return to what zombies were originally meant to be: a satirical device to criticise the mind-numbing effects of social conformity.

I think you're a bit harsh on MPD there (though I was myself at times, for sure) - I think it had plenty of black humor and about as much social commentary as any series of recent vintage.

Oh, to be sure, I am well aware of being in the minority who doesn't think much of Penguin. I think it started really strong but, towards the end, I found that I couldn't care much about the characters, as the numerous twists turned them more and more into "LOOK AT ME, I'VE GOT AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO TELL YOU" devices than people I could empathise with.

That's not to say Sankarea wouldn't bomb. Maybe it will. But, for now, it looks hopeful.

I think they already foreshadowed it in ep 2 and preview

thanks to Another, I kinda aware of that kind of deathflag

Seems like they adapted some parts from the manga quite decently, not to mention they took their time for the prologue and some important backstory.

Indeed. Unfortunately my opinion hasn't changed with the debut of episode 2. It's not awful, and I can already see some of the gushing praise it will receive, but the decision to do a direct one chapter equals one episode conversion seriously calls into question what the studio hopes to achieve beyond serving as a teaser for the manga.

Unfortunately explaining why means explaining manga details, which I won't do here in the open.

Having skimmed through the manga after watching the anime, I can only see what they're doing as an improvement. It's probably best to think of it as a separate self-contained story rather than hoping for it to follow the manga to the end.

My concern is not the quality of adaptation, but the pacing. It's hard to think of this as a separate self-contained story when it mirrors the source material so closely.

I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I first watched this show, but so far, it has shown some potential. It does not feel as reused, and the approach is a bit different from what has been shown lately in anime.

Seeing as the resurrected cat flew out at an incredible rate, it looks like Rea will potentially have super powers as well when she becomes a zombie. I'm not sure if this is a slice of life type anime, horror, or action anime yet, but I look forward to finding out.
