I still ask myself how we decided that we can attain world-wide peace when a few countries have it and others don't.

Oddly enough, going by what has been reported more recently verses what the treaty says, if Israel had signed, it would have been classed as a Nuclear Power, as it already had atomic weapons before the treaty was signed.

As explained by Ithekro, Israel, pakistan and India never signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

For Iran, one has to keep in mind that it is indeed a signatory, but that the treaty was signed by the Shah, so the current Islamic Republic will hardly feel morally obligated to abide it. Actually, as denouncing the Treaty could be seen as a casus belli, it is assumed that they'd rather acquire it first, as insurance.

Back to Israel, everything is quite murky, for their nuclear program involved a lot of secrecy, spying on allies as well as robbery of fissile material. For what we know, their program was only near completion when the treaty was signed, so they wouldn't have qualified as an established nuclear power.

basically any treaty has only as much worth as the signatories are willing to honor it.

in effect, it is worthless.
