Mutations, according to pop science, is often a product more commonly found in interbreeding than by chance. I am not a geneticist, so I cannot affirm to which level is that true.

Many are from recessive genes. In order for a recessive gene to prominate the child must have both halves of it. The only way to get both halves is for both parents to carry the gene.

Others are from gender specific genes that tend to not effect one gender but do affect the other.

Incest in generally considered genetically dangerous because if there is one of these mutations in their gene pool, or some illness causes a mutation somewhere along the line that can be passed on, there is a higher chance that the recessive gene or the mutated gene will become prominate just because of the limited gene pool the DNA has to work with.

If the family has no gene problems, than it is relatively safe. It is unknown to me if the low amount of gene swapping outside that family will eventually result in damaged genes or not. Cloning dramas tend to show repeated cloning on a few select being results in an eventual degrading of the produced clones over time. Be it that the DNA is having to make do without the proper materials or someone's idea that nature doesn't like it and eventually starts breaking it down I don't know. These are sci-fi authors. Most of which seem to prefer traditional people over cloning.

There's 8 of them but I kind of forgot the others two.

As for general animal, distinguing two species is as always hard ... Depend on wich criteria you base yourself i.e. interfecondity, ecological, physical similitude, or phylogenetic. It's not something you can solely decide on the DNA differences.

Yes and no, that's the main criteria biologist do use, but it has its limit. Animals don't do a "circle" in the ability of breeding.

To explain it bluntly : Bird A lives in India, he can breed with bird B living in Cambodge, bird B can breed with bird C living in China, but C and A can't have a fertil offspring together.

another example is how two dogs while being on the same species can't have an offspring together



And i'm sure you understand why, it simply "doesn't fit" (I'm obviously talking about how the belly of the chihuaha would burst if the female were to carry a puppy of the second dog).

Well in short it's compliced, the real guys who decide what belongs where doesn't do it half-assedly, and they say it's quite funny to watch the war once it's decided ... for a biologist that is.

On a personnal view, it seems that the phylogetical way of defining a species is the best, or should I say the "most" accurate, but it has its own problem ... For example fish and reptil simply don't exist if you use such a way of defining. Quite problematic for common human.

These three patients are the first of 12 to undergo the therapy, and the positive results will see Huhn and his colleagues push on with the tests. The results were presented yesterday in London at the annual meeting of the International Spinal Cord Society.

While it's not clear exactly how the stem cells improve sensitivity, the researchers suggest that they may be helping restore myelin insulation of damaged nerves, or perhaps causing existing nerves to function better.

It's too early to tell for sure whether the treatment could represent a standalone treatment for paralysis. It does, however, offer hope that in the future—perhaps when combined with drugs and physical therapy—the treatment could help make paralysis a temporary, rather than permanent, condition.
