Mutations, according to pop science, is often a product more commonly found in interbreeding than by chance. I am not a geneticist, so I cannot affirm to which level is that true.

Many are from recessive genes. In order for a recessive gene to prominate the child must have both halves of it. The only way to get both halves is for both parents to carry the gene.

Others are from gender specific genes that tend to not effect one gender but do affect the other.

Incest in generally considered genetically dangerous because if there is one of these mutations in their gene pool, or some illness causes a mutation somewhere along the line that can be passed on, there is a higher chance that the recessive gene or the mutated gene will become prominate just because of the limited gene pool the DNA has to work with.

If the family has no gene problems, than it is relatively safe. It is unknown to me if the low amount of gene swapping outside that family will eventually result in damaged genes or not. Cloning dramas tend to show repeated cloning on a few select being results in an eventual degrading of the produced clones over time. Be it that the DNA is having to make do without the proper materials or someone's idea that nature doesn't like it and eventually starts breaking it down I don't know. These are sci-fi authors. Most of which seem to prefer traditional people over cloning.

Supersonic Flying Wing Nabs $100,000 from NASA:

"An aircraft that resembles a four-point ninja star could go into supersonic mode by
simply turning 90 degrees in midair. The unusual "flying wing" concept has won
$100,000 in NASA funding to trying becoming a reality for future passenger jet
travel."

In human case, none, to be human you need to :
(Only one of them is enough)

-be permanent bipedelist
-Control fire
-Death cult
-Use of advanced tools
-Art
-Articulated language

There's 8 of them but I kind of forgot the others two.

As for general animal, distinguing two species is as always hard ... Depend on wich criteria you base yourself i.e. interfecondity, ecological, physical similitude, or phylogenetic. It's not something you can solely decide on the DNA differences.

Remembering all of this was hard, atama ga ittaiiiiiiiiiii

Not necessarily need to check up to the genetic level....

"Thinking" man started roaming Earth a couple of thousands years after the "curious" man killed himself by not improving at all....

Currently, "idiot"man is becoming the dominant species nowadays...

I thought species differentiation was decided based on two organisms' ability to produce fertile offspring. :/

Yes and no, that's the main criteria biologist do use, but it has its limit. Animals don't do a "circle" in the ability of breeding.

To explain it bluntly : Bird A lives in India, he can breed with bird B living in Cambodge, bird B can breed with bird C living in China, but C and A can't have a fertil offspring together.

and so we are kind of blocked there ...

another example is how two dogs while being on the same species can't have an offspring together

And i'm sure you understand why, it simply "doesn't fit" (I'm obviously talking about how the belly of the chihuaha would burst if the female were to carry a puppy of the second dog).

Well in short it's compliced, the real guys who decide what belongs where doesn't do it half-assedly, and they say it's quite funny to watch the war once it's decided ... for a biologist that is.

On a personnal view, it seems that the phylogetical way of defining a species is the best, or should I say the "most" accurate, but it has its own problem ... For example fish and reptil simply don't exist if you use such a way of defining. Quite problematic for common human.

Some intriguing and interesting predictions.
Seems like we're in for some pretty kickass moments in the coming years. Excluding the global depression that is.

Self regenerating tooth treatments? Anti-obesity pills? I'm down for that!

I read every page. From 2013, to 2099. Incredible stuff.

Easily my favorite bit of information, was about how by 2055 Earth based telescopes will be able to make out sufrace features of planets light years away.

Mind blowing. An awesome website, might one of the best out there.

Elon Musk says he's planning a 'supersonic, electric hover jetplane':

"Hecamillionaire space cowboy Elon Musk has revealed new and ambitious plans for
the future - among them the idea of a "supersonic electric jet" able to make
hovering landings and takeoffs."

Boffins create super-muscular 'Hulk' mice: Humans next:

"Topflight biology brains say they have identified a key protein, the furtling of
which could allow massively increased muscular development and strength in
human beings. Genetic manipulation of the "Grb10" compound has already been
tried out in mice, producing "hyper-muscular" rodents capable of almost super-
murine feats."

"The scientists thus far are viewing potential Grb10 tweaking as a method for
helping human patients to battle muscle wasting diseases, but there can be little
doubt that the techniques - if successful - would also be abused by the
bodybuilding and rogue-secret-military-special-operations-organisation communities -
and indeed perhaps by the time-poor or lazy."

Gizmodo: Spinal Stem Cell Injections Help Reverse Paralysis

Quote:
A new medical intervention has allowed doctors to inject neural stem cells into the spines of paralyzed patients, successfully helping them recover feeling in previously unresponsive parts of their bodies.

New Scientist reports that a small trial involving three partially paralyzed patients saw injections of 20 million neural stem cells administered directly into their spinal cords. The stem cells were harvested from donated fetal brain tissue, and the patients received immunosuppressive drugs to minimize the risks of rejection.

Before treatment, all of the patients could feel nothing below their nipples. Six months on, two of them can now feel touch and heat as far down as their belly button. While that may not sound impressive, it's a massive leap forward in the treatment of paralysis. Stephen Huhn, one of the researchers, told New Scientist:

"The fact we've seen responses to light touch, heat and electrical impulses so far down in two of the patients is very unexpected. They're really close to normal in those areas now in their sensitivity."

These three patients are the first of 12 to undergo the therapy, and the positive results will see Huhn and his colleagues push on with the tests. The results were presented yesterday in London at the annual meeting of the International Spinal Cord Society.

While it's not clear exactly how the stem cells improve sensitivity, the researchers suggest that they may be helping restore myelin insulation of damaged nerves, or perhaps causing existing nerves to function better.

It's too early to tell for sure whether the treatment could represent a standalone treatment for paralysis. It does, however, offer hope that in the future—perhaps when combined with drugs and physical therapy—the treatment could help make paralysis a temporary, rather than permanent, condition.

Do they have neural stem cells that reverse memory loss?
