Yeah I must agree, this show is awesome. As a pokerplayer i find this game extremely fascinating. Am currently living in Japan so I took the opportunity to learn real Japanese mahjong it's great fun and almost feels as smooth and cool as the anime.
The anime just gets so much better when you understand the purpose and how it all works. Maybe I should try give a short but nice try to translate the basics for a few lines you won't understand the scoring which is the hard part. There are guides but they feel so massive and doesn't that easily explain the awesomeness =) Also for the notice in Japan usually the ones who play mahjong are university students while they are not studying or doing something else. So I must say i don't dislike the mahjong parts of this anime at all it's what makes it great. |

Akagi is too badass. He's up there with Ginko as "most awesome protagonist ever". Anyways, Akagi is a blast to watch, although Japanese style mahjong is a bit different from Taiwanese style (13 tile ron instead of a 16 tile ron, along with a public hole instead of individual ones makes it very different), but I enjoy it nevertheless.

You know...
I didn't mention this before, but the characters are seriously really ugly. However, after getting used to the designs a bit, I'm beginning to see them as stylish instead. Though, they're still ugly. ^_^ ... Episodes 10 and 11 were great. I love how Akagi totally breaks his opponents' souls after each match. He goes totally overboard every time. I know this has been said already, but I never thought non-stop mahjong could be so entertaining. It's a good thing that the show as a whole is only 26 episodes, though, because I can see this losing its charm if it's extended too far. |

really ? I never once thought the characters were ugly ;_;
Obviously it's because I was a huge Fukumoto(the manga-ka for Akagi) fangirl from the start. fyi,there are all those doujin stuff flying around as well..(the link is the official website for the Fukumoto only doujin event..and yes,that's Akagi.)..but I like the way they originally look the best but in a way,the first time I tried to read Fukumoto's comics I avoided them cuz the drawings were so...unique. So I understand people not getting used to the drawings.But the show's still cool,right? speaking about episode 10, Spoiler for episode 10:

After the first couple of eps you don't even notice the different style. If anything i've grown to love it as it fits the series so well.
This would have to be my favourite series so far this year. Seeing the release of a nice new episode always makes my day. |
