But anyway, her birthday isn't in March.

I don't think Mion's birthday was ever shown. The only birthday that people know for sure is Satoko's, June 24. Keiichi is sometime in April, Rena is sometime in July.

March 1st is Mii's day since "three" can be pronounced "Mi" in japanese, thus March 1st is also Mion's day (since Rika always calls her 'Mii'). That makes March 3rd to be Mi-Mi's day (for Rika), and March 4th to be Miyo's day.

i always thought that their own age, and thus in extent, their birthdate were never shown.
but, considering how they are designed in the various doujin, games, and the anime, it would be :

Mion/Shion : 16-17 (and frankly, there is absolutely no way that Mion/Shion could be 14, except if DEEN screwed insanely, along with almost every doujin artist)
Keiichi and Rena : 15-15
Satoko and Rika : 11-13

again, this is only some crude approximation...
the lack of official "age" information was always a big mystery to me... does anyone have a clue? ^^"

The age of the main characters is still undetermined. All the theories below are based on the game, unless stated otherwise. Let's talk about the older group first. We know from Onikakushi-hen (in June) that Keiichi is one year older than Rena and in the same grade. Mion on the other hand, is same age, but one school year older. Mion is an examinee, so that leaves her either in 3rd year High school, or 3rd year junior high.

~Junior High School Theory~ Keiichi (14), Rena (13), Mion (14)

-However, Shion (being the same age) has both a bike and car licence.
-*Manga* Tatarigoroshi-hen: stated that the school has mixed elementry school and Junior High school
-*Manga* Himatsubushi-hen: Shion is drawn as an elementry school student. So 5 years later, she's probably in Junior High
-Tsumihoroboshi-hen: One scene dipicts that Rena is thinking of her future as to whether she should contuine studying or get a job instead. She described herself as "without knowledge". If she's in high school, it's hard to think of herself as "without knowledge".
-*Anime* Ep1: Rena's homework was junior high year 1's (of present day) math.
-Taraimawashi: Keiichi lied to Rena by saying "Recently I made a friend of the same age.", "She's probably from Okonomiya's Junior high school".

~High School Theory~ Keiichi (17), Rena (16), Mion (17)
-Keiichi asked Shion if she had a biker's licence. If Shion was 17, it would be a weird question to ask.
-Kameda talks like a high school student with Keiichi from beginning to the end.
-*Anime* Ep1: Rena's homework contained question from High School year 2(of present day). However, it contained words such as "Assuming" and "Conclusion", which are common words in Junior High level.

During a date in the library, Keiichi has said to Mion, "You sure have done something great to have contuined on with your studies.", and Mion replied "If you put our school as the world's capital then you can pass". This pretty much confirmed that they are in High school (?)...but it could be the setting only made for Miotsukushi-hen

Now, considering the younger group:

~Elementry School Theory~Unknown age, under 10.
-Tatarigoroshi TIPS: Satoko is shown as (Age X).
-Saikoroshi-hen: A scene depicts Rika taking her satchel off after school. At least she is in elementry school.
-Onikakushi-hen: Keiichi has claimed that "can't imagine them (Rika and Satoko) to be the same age.

~Junior High Theory~ Rika (12), Satoko(12)
-Onikakushi-hen: English questions were given to Rika and Satoko during PE. However, they were easy words anyway.
-Satoko has claimed she would be 13 soon. Rika has claimed that her body age is only 5 years apart from Rena's (12+5=17).

it seems that Keiichi is around 3 months or so older than Rena, and Mion is a few months shy of a full year older than him.

what I meant was number wise, as in Keiichi is 1+ on the age count than Rena, as so on...it's true they are only a couple months apart, but in June, their age difference and school year difference is still as stated.

But it seems that in Japan, when you're born, your age is 1 year old, while here in the West, you are born with 0.

That would subtract one year of the calculation

That's absolutely correct (good catch), however, that method of counting your age has been out of practice for quite a while. Rurouni Kenshin is set in the late 1800's, I think.

18,17 and 12 isnt old...actually it fits the story more imo
