they probably have enough food and supply for one march, but not enough supply to reinforce it. so it'd probably be a 1 way trip to the southern kingdoms, while at the same time ruining their own economy.

Since having taken a stock of the entire continent's wheat, it makes the union the most powerful guild around, naturally their influence in political matters will increase. While thanks to inflation, the value of the wealth of the military has in fact decreased.

Oh, this is actually just the beginning of some really brilliant economic maneuvers. I've read the Chinese translations of the light novel, so I already know what Young Merchant is up to. Here are some hints, and although they contain nothing that isn't already shown in the manga (or are just common sense), I'll put it in spoilers since I've written them in a way to specifically lead you toward his unrevealed plan.

Your guess is correct, but there's more to it than just that. Certain aspects of his plan won't come in until a bit later, and the subtlety and economic maneuvering...

I'll just mention a few things:
1. Without wheat, the citizens of Central will need a new food supply.

2. The Southern nations' main food supply is shifting to potatoes rather than wheat now.

3. Generally, when someone is starving, they'll eat pretty much anything. If the authorities happens to oppose it, well, so much worse for the authorities.

4. Even Union can't just hold onto wheat unconditionally. They have to sell it eventually, to someone. Wheat does spoil eventually, after all. However, there wouldn't be much point to the maneuver if they just sell it back to the Central market.

5. With the tariff, wheat will not move from the South to Central, so if the South were to get a new supply of wheat, that won't actually affect Central much. The tariff also doesn't prevent wheat stored in Central from being moved and sold to the South.

6. There's no tariff on potatoes, so if people in central actually wanted to buy and eat them, their only obstacle is the Church.


I'll leave you to add these points together. Play close attention to point 3 and 6 by the way.

Now, tell me, what do you think Young Merchant's underlying goal is?

1) It implies that the merchants will take a significant loss on their investment, because cost inflation hasn't caught up in the south yet
2) Typically in real life, when a country imposes a tariff on a particular good limiting trade, the opposing countries will apply a countervailing tariff at the same time. It would seem likely that with the shortage, Central would impose a tariff on wheat going south too.. unless they're dumb? They're dumb I guess?

Oh, they will indeed sell the wheat to the South (or rather, I think they made a deal or something along those lines with the Lone Winter King. I can't remember the specifics right now though).

On your reasons for skepticism:

1. I do admit that I'm a bit puzzled on this too. It would help a lot if I can remember exactly what Young Merchant's deal with Lone Winter King was, but it's been a while since I read it, and my Chinese needs work...

Still, one should remember that Union started buying wheat since before the inflation was apparent. Also, they dealt directly with nobles quite a bit, rather than the market, which is sure to let them buy cheaper (remember the grain speculation scene?). One should also remember that a tariff will not stop trade, but rather slow it down, and that's not counting the smuggling that's sure to arise, so the price of wheat should still rise in the South. Plus, the tariff was only implemented after the price inflation was already apparent. Thus, I think Young merchant could still make a good profit (break even at the very least).

2. On tariff, I'd like to remind you to pay attention to who proposed it, and where he might have learned it from, and how likely other people are to know it. I'd also like to remind you to think about Young Merchant and, by extension, Union, and how much political power they have in Central.

On the accusation of stupidity and Central. Well... You're right, but not in the way one might think.

Think about it, the setting for this series is not much more advanced than medieval Europe. At that point, who actually understood economics? Other than a few very shrewd masters of merchant guilds, who might have developed some instincts on how the market might shift given certain stimuli, nobody really had any clue about the flow of goods and money.

To compound it, the political masters and decision makers of the age are nobles and the Church, whose understanding of the subject is more or less: the more precious metals/jewels we have stockpiled in our treasury, the richer we are. They have less understanding of the subject than the Spanish Hapsburgs, who thought the gold from the new world would make them rich, when all it really did was cause inflation throughout Europe.

So yeah, the probability of the Central nations making good economic decisions is probably about equivalent to that of determining policy by using a blindfolded monkey throwing darts at a dartboard. Less, actually, now that I think about it, since the monkey would at least be random, whereas the decisions the nobles make based on what they "know" are far more likely to be counterproductive. Heck, in this setting, most likely the only ones who can match the blindfolded monkey is the Demon Queen and her students, and they're all on the Southern side...

You know a manga has great characters when you wish you could see the main heroine more (DQ), but are more than willing to exchange that for further development on everyone else (being just as interesting). Needless to say, this manga is doing a fantastic job at keeping me interested.

That's how I understood it too and not just that, Central and Church will probably be forced to bit bullet and humiliatingly take back the "ban" on potatoes to save themselves from economic collapse (admitting that they were wrong). I'm assuming siphoning of people from Central to South Kingdom due increased difficultly in living there was also part of his calculations.

It's also about time that Dragon Princess did something and I imagine her request has something to do with Hero. If you think about She and the Young Merchant are both similar positions in seeking the affections of their respective loves. Perhaps the two might end up scheming something to reach that goal.

Well this is interesting.

Looks like a prequel novel before the events of the main series. It also includes two drama CDs of the Hero and Demon Queen when they were still kids.

It's about the original four human heroes who fought against the previous Maou before the Demon Queen became the new Maou. According to the description, Grandpa Archer was one of the original heroes!
