There ARE other ways of getting a continuations despite low disc sales -- if the source material has had good sales, or has experienced sales bumps due to adaptations. Heck, this was what Wakaki (author of The World God Only Knows, whose anime has never experienced good sales) always prioritizes, as if his manga keeps on going strong, he can always fund an animation project.

Very true, though sales of the Ika Musume manga didn't see huge leaps in sales after the anime, just modest ones. Offhand I don't know if Akita Shoten was involved in the production committees with Diomedea or not.
